That's what the Media module is setting out to do! We're taking a dual d7-d6 approach, and getting as many developers on board as possible. Join the Media group for more info.

And there will certainly be

And there will certainly be some SOC projects that can be built around that project!

So, should this be a media module project?

@irinaz- would you be interested in turning this into a media module SoC project? There's tons of work to do, and it should revolutionize the ways we think about and work with files/multimedia in Drupal. I know Aaron would be happy to help out, and it's a really great area to work in, since it should work for D6 and D7.

yes, I am happy to join forces - Aaron, let me know what will work best for you. I will post here my perspective on the section "What functionality will the Media module support out of the box?" How far are you in development? There is a list of modules that partially do what I would like to see in the future integrated Upload/Media module.

I think this module should

I think this module should have some thing like content expiration facility. the admin can set expiration time and move to those data to some where else, that would be better for large collection of files. (need some expert review)

scope creep

Doesn't sound terribly related to the suggested core functionality, this feature would probably rather be some small extension module. There are lots of tasks to be done in order to make file integration more approachable, but I dare to claim that content expiration is not a priority task by any means.
