Media Management and Digital Asset Management

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

This project is about building a Digital Asset Server for your enterprise. We will build upon with the existing open source project Mediamosa - http://www.mediamosa.org/ (demos at http://demo.mediamosa.org/). Mediamosa is a Drupal distribution which stores your enterprises media assets such as images, video, and audio. Mediamosa stores media and taxonomy details for each asset (format, duration, height/width, tags, title, description, etc.) as well as rights information about each asset (geo based, time based, etc.). Mediamosa assures that each view of an asset is allowed according to its rights rules, or serves an alternate if denied.

Mediamosa integrates with transcoding servers for making alternate formats and sizes, with CDNs and streaming servers for fast delivery to customers, and with front end web sites and mobile apps for embedding media within articles and so on.

The goal of this project is to identify gaps in Mediamosa so that it can serve a modern media organization. We expect to focus effort on the author's user experience when adding media into Mediamosa, and then using that media in an article. We may also build alternate flows for automatically posting media into Mediamosa such as consuming feeds from broadcast systems, or other media producing parts of our businesses.

am interested in this, I am doing research for a national radio network

they have the largest archive of audio in the country and have numerous stations and contributors

Cool!

Lots of the people behind this are involved in the media / publication / radio space. This is obviously important particularly in that area.

Are you just in the research phase, or are you working on some media solutions?

research now, about to crunch

want to know how these might integrate, converge, upgrade...

Adding media is an important set of tasks on the create content form. We're working on a redesign of the create content page (still under wraps), it will be great to stress-test that design with those. And yes, bulk operations and automation are good points to work on for the admin side of things here.

Would this be fore D7?

chrisstrahl's picture

Are you talking about a redesign within D7, or something for D8? I'd be curious to see what you're up to, but I can be patient :-)

Yeah sorry for the tease :)

Yeah sorry for the tease :) We need to evolve vertical tabs as a container for settings, have a better dedicated area for the saving/publishing bits and yes, make inserting media a better experience. I'm primarily talking D8, as I help designing core UX and UI. That needs to be informed by how D7 evolves in contrib though, so want to help out here as well.

Subscribing

nielsvm's picture

There are many parties involved in the MediaMosa space and getting even tighter integration between both Drupal and MM would be a win-win situation. I've seen several big projects using MediaMosa and on a on a very big deployment scale, the more people we could get here the better... Subscribing!

MediaMosa Project

chrisstrahl's picture

Based on some of our client work we're doing, it looks like a tighter integration with MediaMosa is the development direction for this particular project right now. I'm going to be posting more information about it as it becomes available and I can involve others in the discussion that are closer to the issue. I've been spending most of my time working on the content staging system, but I haven't forgotten about this.

I'll see what I can get other people to contribute that are closer to the project.

We finally posted a rundown

We finally posted a rundown of research and initial directions for a redesigned Create content page here: http://groups.drupal.org/node/214898

No offense guys, but ...

... Let's accept the fact that other are doing a great job for this. Let's not reinvent the wheel. Instead, let's simply improve it if there are rooms for improvement.

Wordpress is pretty good at keeping the images in a central image library or whatever they call it. Personally, I am not a Wordpress fan. However, their developers obviously thinks very differently that the Drupal developers. Just take a look at what they have and use it if need be. These things are all open source and there is no shame in being inspired by other projects.

Cheers

As far as I'm concerned no

As far as I'm concerned no one is trying to reinvent the wheel. Just trying to get Drupal to work better with files and building up the contributed code to handle a media library properly. Though I do agree with you on WP's library points I do not think that this project is too far off point. Just needs more TLC.
