April Meeting: Developing the OpenLayers Module

I will do a presentation on Drupal "coding"! I would love to have some direction. Some ideas/questions:

  • Building a module
  • Drupal Coding standards
  • Creating a new module project on Drupal.org
  • Module building best practice and tips

Some assumptions I will make:

  • You know PHP (http://php.net)
  • You know how to build a site in Drupal (install modules, create content)

OpenLayers Module Development

I currently spend most of my free time developing the OpenLayers module. It isn't even released yet (let alone alpha or beta). I am going to talk about the process of developing this module, which may include the following:

  • Drupal coding standards
  • Drupal best practices
  • Drupal coding paradigms:
    • Implementing hooks
    • Creating hooks
    • Module separation
    • Associative arrays
    • Javascript in Drupal
  • Collaboratively developing
  • Drupal CVS

Read about OpenLayers before you come. You can also read our development discussion.

The style of presentation and some assumptions. I will be happy to answer questions along the way:

  • You know PHP, Javascript, HTML, CSS (can read at least)
  • I will go quickly through basics of creating a Drupal module
  • I will also go quickly over what a Drupal hook is.
