Hello Everyone,

I've just recently started working with groups.drupal.org and there was no group for the whole southeastern side of Virginia, So I figured I would start one up. Its a few days in and I just figured out I needed to post a 'discussion' (Kept looking for the 'POST' or 'Create Content' links!)

Anyhow. Welcome and I look forward to meeting other folks Using drupal in this area.

I personally Live in Poquoson, but work for Virginia Tech building sites for The College of Engineering. I'm beginning to build our new sites using Drupal and so far have really liked it. Feel free to reply to introduce yourselves. I figure we can cover my side of the water as well as the southside and eventually get some groups together for meetups, etc.

I'm new to organizing so feel free to jump in.

Thanks!

xTuple and Druple in Norfolk

bixwilson's picture

I've been lurking here for a few weeks, but I it looks like we could use some more active participation! First let me say that I'm excited that there's a growing Drupal community here in Norfolk and Hampton Roads. Let's stick together and make something of this.

xTuple is a software development company based in downtown Norfolk. We launched our Drupal-based sites (www.xtuple.com and www.xtuple.org) in March. We switched to Drupal from Joomla because liked Drupal's PostgreSQL compatibility and because Drupal seems to have a much tighter code structure. I've been VERY pleased with it as a CMS.

We've been doing some custom development too, aimed at connecting Drupal on the front end with our own application on the back end. xTuple develops PostBooks (www.xtuple.com/postbooks), an open source ERP and accounting application for small and medium-sized businesses. It's a client-server app with a GUI client written in C++. My mission has been to begin to expose selected parts of the application to the web.

We started by creating a Drupal CRM module that ties in to the xTuple incident management system on the back end. This is live on our site, and we're getting close to releasing it as a generic Drupal module that would allow anyone to easily connect a Drupal 6.x site to a PostBooks database (read more at www.xtuple.org/CRMSupportModule or try out a live demo at www.xtuple.org/support/demo). We're working on expanding the functionality to create a web-based front end to the opportunities (lead-management) system as well.

I'm also in the middle of an Ubercart store implementation. We'll use the uc_edi add-on module to export orders in xml and import them into PostBooks. I'll make the instructions for how to import orders from Ubercart to PostBooks available for general release soon.

So, I'm excited by the progress we're making. I'd love to hear other people's stories too. I'm also interested to find out if there are any Drupal newbies out there who'd be interested in a one-day Intro to Drupal seminar (taught by me, of course!) sometime in the next few months.

Cheers!

OoglieBooglie launched Phase 1

Some friends and I recently formed an LLC called Needle Consulting. On April 27 we launched http://www.oogliebooglie.com . The short version is that oogliebooglie is a site where artists can upload t shirt designs. Members then vote on the designs. Winners are selected using a custom formula designed by the client. The artist receives $2 for every shirt sold. We decided to use Drupal 5 mostly due to the fact that Ubercart D6 was not ready when we started coding the site back in January. As a side note, this site was developed for a local client here in VA Beach. Bixwilson thanks for getting things rolling here.

This will really help

Thanks for starting this group. I've been tinkering with drupal since 4.7. Still learning how to get the most out of this wonderful tool. Also could ya'll take a peek at this forum post I made last week. I am trying to get this problem resolved but so far no help.

Took a look at

Took a look at http://www.guidinglightapostolic.com/church but I am a little 'new' to be able to diagnose just from the screens. This is one of those situations were group meetups could help. You could show people you admin side without giving them remote access to it. Also I started with Drupal 6, so what I do know applies to 6 mostly. Just wanted you to know people are trying, since it looks like this issue has been bugging you for a while.

Alternative to Brilliant Gallery

I too had some issues with Brilliant gallery and opted for Fast Gallery. It may be worth checking out. Set up is pretty easy. Here is the link -- http://drupal.org/project/fast_gallery

Cool, thanks

I'll give it a try and see how it works out.

Awesome

It's great to see some folks have found this group. I was surprised we didn't already have one when I looked on here a few months ago.
My Current mission is to really, REALLY sink my teeth into theming. As i come from a background in graphic design, and in years past had worked on teams where others did all the coding past basic html, I'm pretty excited to get back into making things look the way i want.

bixwilson: I'm always interested in tutorials, regardless of the level, even newbie stuff often yields a few tips or tricks i didn't know about, especially with Drupal, as its so 'DIY' when you are trying to learn it.

Good to see you all.
