Disappearing Status Bar

Hi!
I've been working on updating my site (I've run into some problems with some of the modules). So, I'm working on my test site and I've updated Chaos Tool Suite to the current recommended release, but since then, I've had some weird things with the updating process (and I have no idea if it is because of Ctools or just a coincidence). So, I go to the update section of the modules page and find my list of modules to update. I then click the box for one to update and it goes to the next page: "Downloading Updates" but does not come up with a status bar and does not move past that page. The strange thing is, if I let it sit for awhile (like wait a few days and go back) I can usually update one or two modules and then I lose it again. I have tried clearing the cache (always twice!) and logging out and logging back in, but neither helped. I was wondering if any of you had any tips for other ways to troubleshoot this problem (I looked around drupal.org and found that someone else had this same thing happen with Drupal 6, but did not receive any responses). At this rate, I'll be able to update all my modules by June! Of course, I could update the modules manually...

Thanks for any suggestions you have!
Trista

Errors

Are there any errors in your database logs (/admin/reports/dblog) or server logs after this happens? It sounds, to me, like it may be a server timeout issue.

I don't use the UI to do module updates very often (preferring Drush, when available), but I have had it time out on me in the past.

No relevant errors

Thanks for the tip Scott! I will keep checking the error logs on my list of things to do when troubleshooting. I did not find any server timeout errors. Just a bunch of date/time errors. I will keep doing the updates a few at a time... it will give me more time to troubleshoot! Speaking of which... I had a sort of unrelated question: I am trying to update the date/calendar/views/ctools modules and the calendar module says that it is no longer backwards compatible (and when I update I lose the calendar completely). Can you explain a bit about what "no longer backwards compatible" means in this situation and how I can move the calendar I currently have to the updated modules?
Thanks!

The jump from the 2.x version

The jump from the 2.x version of Calendar to the 3.x version of Calendar significantly changed the way calendar is created in Views. All of my Calendar upgrades have been pretty smooth. "No longer backwards compatible" typically means that, if you build a Calendar in version 3 of the module, you wouldn't be able to revert to version 2 of the module and still have your calendar work. That's not terribly unusual. Had they said there was "no upgrade path" from version 2 to version 3, then your old calendars wouldn't work with this new version. That's not the case, though.

So, you should be able to update those modules smoothly. I know you're having trouble with it, though. What do you mean when you say you "lose the calendar completely"? Does the View still exist that built the calendar? Has the path just changed, perhaps? Try the calendar/month path.

There may be a bit of cleanup work to do once you update to the new Calendar/Ctools/Views/Date modules, but most of your work should carry over. I'd need to see your existing calendar and the new calendar (from the back end) to be able to tell you exactly what may need to be tweaked.

Disappearing Calendar

Thanks for explaining the "no longer backwards compatible." It's pretty much what I was thinking, but wasn't sure if maybe I needed to do something extra to update. I went ahead and exported the views into pastebin good: http://pastebin.com/2SBG7tD4 and bad: http://pastebin.com/k0n7qWNv. They look similar! What I meant when I said the calendar disappears is that not only do I lose the link in the menu, but when I go to views and click on edit for the calendar view, I get a basically blank page (not WSOD). It says Calendar (content) and then Auto Preview with a checkbox and a button with update preview. I still have a lot of other modules to update (not views, ctools or date though) and I need to udpate core, so maybe it's one of those. The great thing is I have the test site going and so I can take my time figuring it out!
Thanks for your time :)

Neverminde... I figured it out!

I read through the list of issue again and found one similar to mine and it said to revert the view and then it would be picked up by the code. And, the readme.txt says that too! I really need to do some more research before I post! (you think that would come naturally to a librarian, but I think in Drupal I kinda assume it's all over my head).
