An update on the InDesign Integration Kit for Drupal

Hi all. I've received quite a few queries about how things are going with the InDesign Integration Kit (IIK) package and the Chimp layout automatisation software. I'm happy that so many people are excited about the project and I'd like to give you an update on where we're headed.

(If you don't know what I'm talking about you should probably see the linked post first :-))

I do realize I've been very quiet these last months, so first off I'd like to apologize for keeping you all in the dark for so long. Anyhow: good news and bad news. I'll start with the disappointing news first.

The code of the project is still pretty much the same as it was in november. While both the IIK and the layout automatisation are actually functional at this point, the IIK especially is still very experimental. "Give us a beta!" Sorry, no can do. At this stage, a beta would mean dedicating time to troubleshooting that otherwise would go to further development, and it's still too early for the feedback of testers to be useful.

What's the hold-up? I've come to the realization that the project is too big to depend on just my efforts, and that it just isn't going to work if I can only contribute to the project in my spare time. The IIK and Chimp need to be stable and dependable enough to be put to use in a production environment that has strict deadlines, and I can't provide that promise by myself.

So on to the good news: while the code has been stagnant for these last few months, the project is alive and kicking. I've spent these past few months trying to come up with a longer-term strategy to make this into a viable, healthy open-source project. We're not quite there yet, but you'll see a website in about a month. We'll also make Chimp available at that time, together with documentation and a test kit so you can start playing around with it and see how it works and automates design.

I'm also happy to say that I'll be working together with the very nice people from Rock Solid Solutions on the integration of Chimp in an existing commercial product. That means we get to thoroughly stress-test Chimp and it also means we can invest considerable dev-time in it.

The InDesign Integration Kit will take longer to mature and at this point I'm not setting any release date, but I'm happy to say that work has resumed and once the website is live, we'll be providing regular status updates.

Last but not least, as the first step towards open-sourcing the IIK we'll launch a developer's preview ahead of the public beta, so if you'd like to participate in that (and feel that you or your organisation can actually contribute something to the project either in terms of code or financially), talk to me.

I'm still having some trouble putting together a good team and finding the funding to keep this project going, but we're getting there. That said, I'd very much like to hear your suggestions. I think this stuff can have an big impact on newspapers and other publications -- IIK makes web-to-print publishing a breeze and Chimp shaves almost 1/2 off of the time spent layouting -- so I hope we can make it work.

akmeeran - Sat, 2009-04-18 08:06

hi

I am ahamed.
Although my question is included XML too. I highly appreciate if you can help me clearing my doubts I have given below. However I am sure since you are a Adobe software genious, you will not take hours to answer these questions. I need just some few tips. If your charge is reasonable for this I am prepared to pay for it. Please let me know the payment terms and procedures.

My problem is:

This is my XML file:

I need to have this kind of format,

I think to get this kind of format, it needs to have XSLT style sheet option
which will help to devide catagory wise in alphabaticlal order.

If there are catagories like bus service, transport, Aircraft Charter, Rental & Leasing,
airport, all should come separeate catogories there should not be any repetition in any titles.

and the logos connected should include in every individual catogories automatically from XML file.

In some of the entries if there is any ommitions of any subject like e-mail address, web address, or phone numbers,
it shoud automatically leave space for the same.
