User group meeting

This month we're meeting in Downtown Houston at the SoftLayer office, a hosting company that recently acquired The Planet (in the same offices The Planet occupied, for those familiar).

Phil Jackson will talk to us about how they use Drupal, and we'll have the usual time for conversation as well. Be sure and come out, as I am sure we'll all learn something.

They are generously providing some food and drinks, so please don't miss this one.

Wow! So, after 9 NBA championships, now he's a Drupal guy?

Wait, what's that? Oh. It's a DIFFERENT Phil Jackson? Ok, so this guy DOESN'T know Kobe, Shaq or Jordon, but he DOES know Drupal and web hosting?

Well, that's probably the BETTER Phil Jackson for us.

Alright, got THAT out of my system. No need to bring it up tomorrow night.

There might be street parking, and also the Hobby Center garage. Not sure of the cost.

I used to work for the company that installed the
network for he building when it was The Planet.
I used to park down the street for free. If you
Google "N Memorial Way" you'll see where it is.
Near the Houston Police Federal Credit Union.

bummer

I'm not feeling well and the traffic map is still showing <20 mph traffic on some spots of 290. I don't think I'll be able to make it downtown. If you video stream it, I can try that. Otherwise I'm going to stay put. :(

Great meating

Phil Jackson pretty much redid this speech http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvOO5vkRbGY but with a whole lot more hands on and questions and answers. They got links to the website under the YouTube video. He did a real good job tonight.

yeah.

i thought it was a damned good overview of using drupal for an existing case.
but i really liked watching how he used his creativity in making it the way he wanted.
still have to find out more about his use of solr.
thanks all around.
good veggie pizza, too!

Yes, Thank you VERY much to

Yes, Thank you VERY much to Phil and SoftLayer for the excellent presentation and mad hosting skills! I had a really good time. We'll have to make sure the March meetup is nearly as awesome. :)

Perhaps a "show us your backend" night? ;)

Depends on the backend!

TransitionKojo's picture

As long as we're talking DRUPAL backends, that might be GREAT. One thing Phil pointed out was how he doesn't get to see a lot of other Drupal sites and I think that's the case for most of us.

So, seeing how others solve different design problems with Drupal could be very helpful.

I've we're talking Fergie-Ferg/"My Humps" backends. Well...I think that would just 'end' badly for all involved.

Thanks for coming!

I appreciate you all coming to listen to me talk Drupal! I had a great time meeting everyone and look forward to future meetups.

EXCELLENT presentation

TransitionKojo's picture

Thanks SO much to SoftLayer for hosting (and feeding!) us. The presentation was great. Nice to get some insight into someone else's approach.

You said that you don't often get a chance to see other people's Drupal work, and I think that's the case for a lot of us. So, this was nice to see: an inside look at someone else's design methods and process.
