First Buenos Aires Drupal Users Group Meeting held!

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

[Versión en español abajo]

It was great meeting with everyone and talking about Drupal face-to-face, in person, with real live people!
We spent a couple of hours introducing ourselves, and how we are working at present with Drupal.
Then we spoke about what kind of activities we would like to plan for our new group, and what kind of contribution we could make back to the community, including the Drupal community as a whole and helping grass-roots groups who need to get their message out.

Only local images are allowed.

(Kodak moment: http://awebfactory.com.ar/node/175 )

Since the holidays are coming up, and many are going away for the summer (January and February), some of us may hook up in January, but our next big event (hope to be working with some local open source communities on that) will probably be in early March.

Most of us want to learn more about Drupal, evangelize Drupal locally, and work on some modules together.

Some of us had beer, and some of us had coffee, and a great time was had by all:

We will be announcing our activities here, or perhaps on our own local group page.

Saludos!

Hi All, Very nice

adminfor@inforo.com.ar's picture

Hi All,

Very nice meeting!!!

Just to share an idea, we can work on that. It could be very useful for hispanic drupal community.

This is a Spanish Stemmer. I've seen it specially in one of my sites, that it´s not easy (sometimes hard) to find something within Drupal search, due to, for example, plurals, verbs conjugations, etc.

Also, we have some references that could help, and without so much effort we can make Spansh Stemmer a reality. I think we can join our efforts together, mixing our strenghts, and work on it, addapting one of the existing modules to spanish..

Let me introduce what I´ve seen up to know:

These modules work in two instances, first when the index is built, replacing words with it stem, and in the second place, when you look something in the search node, replacing also searched words with their stems, in order to match stems. This is to avoid mixing pears with bannanas (Is this a porteño's chiste?).

Please, take a look at this references, (if you have some time to... )

1) in Drupal, 3 stemmers are built up to now:

http://drupal.org/project/porterstemmer english. I tested it, worked so fine, and also works in 5.0 but it wasn't ported so far. The porting is in process, only the new info file is needed.

If you install it (before the porting to 5.0), no descriptive info will be shown in modules page, but you can check it anyway and it works fine. It's installed in my 5.0 muletto, www.themessage.com.ar, try searching this words, belove, beloved, beloving, or leave / leaving, come/comes, etc. I got really surprised.

http://drupal.org/project/frenchstemmer for french

http://drupal.org/project/dutchstemmer for dutch

2) References in snowball
http://www.snowball.tartarus.org/algorithms/spanish/stemmer.html (there are stem examples).
http://www.snowball.tartarus.org/algorithms/french/stemmer.html
etc

Also, you can find there, the source algorithms and stopwords of the coding mentioned in 1)
As per Porter recommendations, stop words, should not be stemmed, otherwise, results are going to be a mess.

Spanish stop words:
http://www.snowball.tartarus.org/algorithms/spanish/stop.txt

Then, if this idea is approved by the team, we can go forward.

Saludos,
Gustavo

I would like to work on this with you

victorkane's picture

Gustavo,

Really sounds like a great project; I want to work with you on this.
Since I only have a few hours a week to work on this, can you write an acceptance test for a first mini-prototype? (i.e., fresh Drupal 5.0 installation, which modules, what module needs to be developed, with what functionality?) and where this could be hosted.

If we could take that small step, then we will successfully avoid "enthusiasm paralysis".

If you set up a subdomain somewhere, then send anyone in the group interested the subdomain ftp access, and set up the project module (if it is ported to 5.0, otherwise a diary book page will do) with the list of tasks.
Then each of us could log in and take a task and just do it.

I am willing to get started anytime.

any news on this module?

Hi,

Have you worked on this spanish stemmer module? Anything you can share at this point?

Spanish stemmer

adminfor@inforo.com.ar's picture

Yes, It's running in production in my sites for about two months, but few things are necessary to be made before publishing it:

  • "my" stop words have to be put as a parameter, because now are part of the beggining of the module as constants, such as spanish articles "a la las los" (a, the...), another strings that people get used for searching such as "buscar" (search), "donde " (where), and are as much not relevant for results considering the information I know are into my sites. This strings may vary form site to site.

  • Someone to explain me how to create and upload a module.

  • Someone to share the support effort derived from maintenance.

Someone wants to join? Please, let me know

Saludos,

Gustavo

Considerations:

  • Consider that an additional effort will be necessary to process searches and indexing during cron.

  • Some modifications where made to the algorithms, accents are stripped out before search because 80% users don't use it during search. This may cause some words to as "bajo" (bass guitar, low) and "bajó" (went down) to be treated as the same (as a "b"). Nevertheless results improved by 1000%.

  • Italian, French and Portuguese (Brasilian) are in "Gamma" test. So simmilar than this spanish module and needs support from a native speaker form those languages.

  • Accents module has to be deactivated (if present) because it's embedded in the stemmer module.

  • "Stemmersp" + Synonynms module (synonyms entered in taxonomies that are invisible to users) make an explosive combinations (meaning explosive as a good thing of course!!! lol), for example, you can try search this combinations with almost the same results (why almost? when the exact word is presente in the node, this will be in first order than the stemmed one)

-"delivery de pizzas en belgrano"
-"pediría una pizza en belgrano"
-"pedidos de pizza en belgrano"
-"pedido de pizza en belgrano"
-"pizza cerca de belgrano"

If you want run some tests at http://inforo.com.ar

  • "Spanglish stemmer" is in "Delta" test, this stems a combination of Spanish + English. It sounds as a stupid thing but, so many english words are in use around and have to be considerated, using the previous example, "delivery" and "deliveries", and strange "latin" plurals like "deliverys".

Gustavo

october?

greggles's picture

If this can wait until October then perhaps the October meeting can be about "How to contribute code to Drupal.org" which is a topic I'd be happy to present about (I will be in BsAs at the end of September and Victor Kane will return to the BsAs after Drupalcon and some other vacations in mid-October). So...next topic decided?

Anything Going On?

Is there anything 'Drupal' going on in BsAs this coming February or March?

I'm curious, given the possibility that I might be through there then.

cheers!
