Theme development workflow

frost's picture

Hi folks
I've been working on several Omega themes using a combination of Firebug, TextWrangler & Filezilla. My workflow is to tweak CSS with Firebug until it looks good, then open the CSS file in Filezilla (with TextWrangler) and save the edits back to server. No source control for this.

I'd be interested to hear what other peoples tools and workflows look like. I'm on a Mac (Leopard) and am looking around for a more functional Mac-based CSS editor if anyone has a favourite.

In terms of a mac, css

In terms of a mac, css focused editor I think Espresso is usually considered to be one of the best (http://macrabbit.com/espresso/). Not sure but I think it might have some sort of live editing a remote site through ftp.

If your using firebug to edit css you can use http://code.google.com/p/css-x-fire/ to save the changes you make to the relevant files. I am not sure if you already are doing this? It is very cool though! I don't, however, use it myself mainly because I usually use a css preprocessor and chrome as my dev browser.

Personally I use textmate (though I am giving chocolat a whirl at the min - chocolatapp.com) and use livereload (livereload.com) to auto update the browser when css files are changed (like firebug & chrome dev tools do). Oh, and it is all version controlled with git.

Hope that helps!

thanks for that, expresso

thanks for that, expresso looks good once i upgrade to snow leopard or lion, im still on leopard tho.
i couldnt really work out css-x-fire, will have to look at it again.

chocolate looks good from the web page as does textmate, but do either/both have css support, i didnt see it mentioned in either case.
livereload also looks great but again i'll need to take the plunge to snow leopard. i just dont have a day to dedicate to making everything work again after the upgrade!

I now the pain of updating OS

I now the pain of updating OS all to well! I'm on Snow Leopard and updated to Lion a few months ago before having to revert to Snow Leopard again. Took a whole weekend!

chocolate looks good from the web page as does textmate

They both have support for css in the sense of syntax highlighting and snippets. Not in the same sort of way as Espresso but I more than enough to make writing css enjoyable!
