Anyone around Ithaca?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Hey all,

I moved to Ithaca from California a few months ago and I'm just now starting to get back into working with Drupal. It looks like this is the closest geographical group to where I'm at. While I am interested in dropping by one of your meet-ups sometime, I'm also wondering if there are other folks working with Drupal who are a little closer to me and may be interested in doing some things closer to home. It would be good to know for people who want to carpool to a meet-up or start a smaller, local (sub)group. Anyone out there?

Thanks,

Kyle

Greetings from Syracuse

Hey Kyle,

Welcome to CNY! Unfortunately, there's not a lot of Drupal activity in CNY, which is why I've gotten involved with the WNY group. They're extremely welcoming, and their regular meetings are remote friendly (saves a multi-hour drive). There should be another DrupalCamp this year, too... next closest major Drupal communities that I'm aware of are in Toronto and downstate.

Meetup - sure, I'm open to it, it's always good to talk shop.

If you're looking for remote work, let me know, I've got a client who is hiring...

Best,
Jon

Welcome. . . .

Hi Kyle--

Sure, you are in a great spot for Drupal as interest picks up around the region. You may or may not have luck getting permission from D.o to start a new group . . . but are always welcome to participate in the WNY group. Physically or online.

Speaking of which, I am close to rolling out a plan for next week's meeting (as luck would have it, online this month). We always need help coordinating and planning our topics. If you have any in mind, promote them here!

I'll also drop a note off-list to an Ithacan (right?) who may be a good person to consult on the interest level there.

Ithaca is Gorges (yeah, I had to go there)

Hi Kyle,

There's a good number of us here in Ithaca. I'm just a few blocks from the commons, where a bunch of other Drupal developers work. I've been trying to figure out a good time/place for a Drupal focused meet-up, but haven't had much luck.

Feel free to drop me a line....maybe we can figure something out.

Lauren

Thanks!

Well, I'm glad to hear I'm not alone out here! Ithaca has been... gorges... so far, though I've heard that the winter is usually a lot worse than it has been.

I'm not sure what I'd like to do just yet, but I'll definitely keep an eye on the group. If anyone wants to put something together before I do, feel free to drop me a line.

Interested in starting meetup

I am in Ithaca. in Denver for Drupalcon now, but would interested in a local meetup in April.

I tried to start Groups page on d.o last year, but they were not receptive. John if you are interested I would suggest we create a section on WNY group for Ithaca or other cities.

On a brighter note, there is interest among WNYDUG people to start allying with BarCamp and/or RIT as soon as April. The idea is to gain a critical mass for throwing another D-camp. I suppose I should ask, is Rochester too far a trek to contribute to a group effort like a camp? Maybe attending a meetup up there would also help form the core of a new section but closer to your geographical area. In the end, D.o still makes the decision, of course.

As for forming your own meetups (on a regular basis), did you know that Cleveland bypassed g.d.o and uses Meetup.com for its monthly meetings? They had been charging a couple of bucks to defray the cost, but to the best of my knowledge have been going strong since the end of 2010.

We always need more planners like you. When you get back from Denver, get in touch and we can see about getting a planning conference call going.

Thanks--I have to finish listening to the keynote now!

I think Rochester would be

I think Rochester would be fine (I presume it'd be a weekend camp, right?), but we just drove to Maine last weekend to get a corgi, so maybe I'm not the best person to ask about distance driving.

I'm not necessarily looking to break off from this group immediately (especially since it seems like there's only a few CNY folks, judging from the responses). I would be more interested in getting some activities or meetups set up a little closer to home.

Finger Lakes Drupal?

One more Ithacan Drupaler here. There are a bunch of us, actually. I'd also recommend checking out the Ithaca Web People meetup: http://www.meetup.com/ithaca-web-people/.

Unfortunately, I'm often out of town for meetup days, but I think it would be great to have an Ithaca or Finger Lakes Drupal group with a meetup date.
