Is there a way to delete the mission from the front page of an acquia slate site? I want the image to show, but not the mission on top of it. If I simply leave the mission blank, the image won't show up.
Thanks,
Leah

Edit the page-front.tpl.php
Hi Leah, thankfully this is an easy fix. Open up your page-front.tpl.php and remove the following lines:
Line 68:
<?phpif ($preface_sidebar || $mission) :
?>
Line 81:
<?phpendif;
?>
That removes the "if" statement around the div. What it's saying there is if $mission or if $preface_sidebar are present, print this div. Otherwise, hide it. So by removing this bit of code it always prints it and displays the image and div as needed. Hope this help.

Top menu not looking right
Good comment. Here's my problem:
The demo of this excellent theme shows a very neat looking primary link menu. But when I enable primary links, they look awful! See what I mean: http://danny.jrneumiller.com/acquia/
How can I make this look right?
Looks like you're adding a
Looks like you're adding a Primary Menu block there in the #header-top region. The Primary Menu isn't styled per the CSS so it's looking like that, a normal menu. The link you have for "Forum" on the top right is actually the Primary menu.

Okay...
That seemed to work. Why would their be a block for menu and yet you don't have to use it? Makes no sense. How would anyone know that?
Anyway... I would like the menu items to be in all caps. They are lower case. Any suggestions?
Also, is there anyway to keep the blog from showing on the front page? We just want the front page to be an intro, with no manageable content.
menu items in all caps
I can think of two ways:
1) Re-type your menu item titles in all caps.
2) Make them all caps via css using text-transform: uppercase;

The menu items are typed in caps. No luck.
I'll try the css thingy, (which I dislike as much as going under the hood of any car.)
While I'm at it...
I would also like the mission statement to show up on the front preface sidebar. Any clue how to do this?
Tried Views?
It may become a whole new adventure for you but working with views will create a customized front page

Create a new Block
Don't know why I didn't think of this before but you could simply create a new block with your mission statement content and place it in the front preface sidebar.
Yep
I was actually successful in doing just that. The site is looking better.
I still want to remove the blog entry from the bottom of the main page. (Why isn't there an option to turn it off?)
There is, just gotta know
There is, just gotta know where to look: /admin/settings/site-information
On that page at the bottom, change the "Default front page" field to the URL of page you want to show on the homepage. For example, make a new page and place it at www.example.com/home. Then come back here and to make that page the front page, change this field to "home" and you're all set.
