Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Start:
2012-04-18 18:00 - 20:00 America/Vancouver
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

As per our discussion in the interest thread, please come join us at our Monthly Drupal Users Group. Reasons to come? To meet people in your Drupal Community, share ideas, learn, and socialize. Sometimes we hang out at home/work doing Drupal by ourselves too much! Its nice to have a chance to get out.

WHEN/WHERE:

Wednesday, April 18th, 6:00PM at the Friendly St. Market, on Friendly St. in Eugene. They should have food, coffee, tea, beer, etc.

BIG NOTICE: We're going to invite @effulgentsia to share some information with us about developments in Drupal 8. And then, in a lightning-talk fashion we'll go clockwise from him and do 5-10 min presentations about our interests in the group, what we're doing, what we're working on, what w'd like to see happen, etc. (of course, optional. you can simply just introduce yourself too!). After that's done, and everyone has had a chance to speak, we can do whatever we'd like - informal meeting will ensue. There are many potential roles for people to fill in a new and forming group like this, so we can adapt/change as needed.

It was proposed to keep a consistent timeline with our meetings, so we can do the 3rd Wednesday of every month, as that seemed generally acceptable to the crowd. We can make an interest thread each month about where / what to meet, and then schedule another event.

Friendly St Cafe

I talked to the owner, and although they usually close at 6, he is willing to stay open later that evening if there's going to be a handful of people there buying a few things at least. :)

Slowfamily

zkrebs's picture

Thanks for checking that - so, we're good to go? I think we'll have at least 5 people there, and if we don't reach the mark perhaps a little donation can be left.

Yeah

slowfamily's picture

Yeah, it's a go, but if you could, give him a call at 541-343-3460 some time before to confirm.

GENERAL UPDATE

zkrebs's picture

Its happening, the owner is going to stay open until 7-7:30, and we can stay later w/o service if we want. Welcome you all to come to our Eugene Drupal Users Group, tomorrow night at 6:00PM at Friendly St. Market Cafe (see details in original post)

Next meeting!

snathaidmhor's picture

I'm new to Drupal. I'm managing a migration from two websites into a single LAMP rel. 6.0 Drupal site, to launch mid-August.

I'm specifically interested in why 7.0 is not used more, any if there are any issues migrating content/navigation from a WIMP, rel. 7.0 site into a larger LAMP, rel. 6.0 site.

Other than that, I'm eager to learn more about Drupal and get to using it!

Tonight's meeting

See you there.

Whoa, that was a nice meeting!

REPORT:

We had a very good meeting at the Friendly St. Cafe with I believe 11 people besides myself showing up. We had a contingency from a few local businesses and/or dev groups and some people from the U of O.

We did introductions around the circle, were introduced to core concepts in how/why Drupal 8 is being developed, and then talked about: site upgrade paths, different Drupal 8 initiatives, Aegir, CiviCRM and the future of the group meetings.

I want to personally thank everyone who came and shared, it was awesome to see so many Drupal people! It would be really nice to connect with the U of O student Drupal group too!

So, on our plate is preparations for the next meeting. It was discussed to perhaps dedicate 1 hour of meeting time for working on core issues, and then possibly doing a "module overview" presentation, or doing some charity / non-profit work. Forming a group is at first just getting comfortable and getting to know one another, then we can start doing some amazing things.

Additionally, we need to figure out if we want to do the Friendly St. Market again, or another location that's more "laptop friendly" or has Whiteboards. I said I'd put this up as a question to the community to handle on line. Also, I feel like I can do some service by helping organizing, but if someone wants to share that responsibility that's great - all I want to see is a thriving local Drupal users group!

OK - in the next week or two, I am sure we can create another thread about all of this, just wanted to do a little writeup for folks.

glad it was good

krainsong's picture

Hey I'd like to try to make the next meeting. One space I can think of that is nice is Cafe Yum, they have a conference type meeting room that can handle 11 people I think- it's the one on Franklin I'm thinking of. They may even have a white board. And you can close the door to shut out noise.

Next Meeting

zkrebs's picture

Keeping in mind that we're about one week out, the third Wednesday of the month is the 16th.

Krainsong, if we kept to our 6:00PM schedule, would you be able to make it to Cafe Yum? Would the rest of the group be interested? The owner of the Friendly St. Market thanked me and said we were a great group, and would be interested in having us come back too. We should decide this soon.

Also, on the topic of what we're going to do at the meeting - does someone want to spearhead spending an hour working on core issues?

This month is very busy for me, so I am happy to get the details sorted out, but am more than happy to have someone organize the "theme" of this meeting.

next meeting in May

krainsong's picture

hi there, I already have a commitment on the 16th, but in summer I don't have that third wednesday commitment so I could conceivably join in June. thanks for thinking of me and I'll stay tuned. Karen R

I'll attend!

I definitely want to attend. I'm relatively new to Drupal, so, anything's okay for me. Just want to continue growing my knowledge, right now.

Books and Drupalize.me License

gritty's picture

Hi All,

I received the following from this year's LinuxFest Northwest as a door prise:

Lullabot Drupalize.me License, Full access one 1yr subscription to Drupal 7 learning series All 541 videos, Value $420.

"Drupal 7" Visual Quickstart Guide by Tom Geller

I would love to give this material to you. Please note that the "Drupalize.me License" must be activated by 5.27.12 or it will expire.

Can you tell me when your next meeting will be so that I can give them to you? If you don't want this material please let me know so that I can find another home for them before the "Dupalize.me License" expires.

Thanks.

Kent

=== Update

Okay, I have found a home for both the books and the videos.

Thanks for the help.

Wednesday the 24th ( IMPORTANT EDIT )

zkrebs's picture

Lets plan for next Wednesday the 24th at Friendly St Market at 6:00PM - unless there's an objection?

There is wireless internet available. We can spend the first hour either crunching bugs, learning about new modules, looking through Kent's books, or mentoring each other with problems. If anyone comes up with a great presentation between now and then, we can get it ready for our next meeting and find a spot with a projector or big white board. I have a big white board I could bring, by the way, but I need an easel to put it on. If we're all even just there doing our independent projects and casually talking, that's ok by my watch.

I will look back for responses, need about 5 people willing to come. I see a couple above. When we hit the mark, I'll schedule with Friendly Market and officially announce.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I may have some very important community related tasks to attend to on the third Wednesday, so actually, if we could do it the 4th week of the month it would be better for me. IF someone wants to completely shepherd the meeting for the 3rd, let me know.

23rd better for me too

effulgentsia's picture

Do you mean Wednesday the 23rd? If so, that's better for me as well, because I have (non-Drupal) friends from out of town visiting me next week. But if the rest of you decide to proceed with the 16th and want to get into working in the core issue queue, I'll come and help get us going with that.

YES! I did mean Wednesday the

I was at a recent meeting of local non-profit technologists sponsored by local technology n/p netCorps at CASA of Lane County (just north of Gateway Mall on Deadmonds Ferry Road.

They had a very cool detached conference room with a projector, large screen, wireless and wired Internet, and a kitchen and restrooms. When I asked, the woman hosting the meeting said they would consider allowing a small group working on non-commercial stuff to use the room. It's a bit out of the way, but something to consider for future meetings.

Possible meeting space downtown

dylane1's picture

Hi everyone, at the last meeting I mentioned a group called CodeChops — http://www.codechops.com/ | http://www.meetup.com/CodeChops/

They have space for small meetings during work hours, and larger space for after hours meet ups. It's free, and also has the potential for bringing in more people who are interested in Drupal, but don't know much about it.

Mark Davis is the head honcho there and this was his response to my inquiry about the possibility of meeting there:

"You have some options for having a meetup at the space. all of them are free as long as you are not charging. You can use the conference room that seats about 10 during normal work hours. after hours you can use the confernece room or the main space that has couches and a large wall for projecting. after hours you will need to find a member who has access to the space to agree to open it up. If you have an evening in mind (tues/thurs work best) then we can find a member who will stay late."

I like both of the

zkrebs's picture

I like both of the aforementioned Ideas - its hard to choose because both are so awesome sounding.

Perhaps Code Chops is more set up for us to work with them right now, whereas the other one might take a little more work?

I like the idea that it could bring more people into the Drupal world.

Is 6:00PM "afterhours" ?

Ok, well...

dylane1's picture

It sounds like Tuesdays and Thursdays are best for using the CodeChops space, so if everyone is still down with Wednesday the 23rd, perhaps we should go with that at the Friendly St Market, and then try to book time at CodeChops for another time in the future.

I'm pretty sure 6pm is "after-hours"

BTW they're having a general "mixer" on the 17th:

books on Drupal

gritty's picture

I have given the Lullabot Drupalize.me License away. I felt there was just to much uncertainty about when I might pass it on to you all without missing the license registration deadline. I can/could give the books to the same person. However, since I already indicated that you all could have them I am reluctant to just do that without giving you all one last chance to claim them.

The 23rd is good for me.

themusician's picture

Just chiming in to say that the 23rd would work for me as well. If core issue work is something we plan on doing I am willing to help. We are facilitating our first actual work session with colleagues at the UO this Friday.

Hopefully this would allow me to provide some help, though I can't promise anything.

Codechops

zkrebs's picture

gritty; thanks for the update. we're a new group and getting our pattern and rhythm together here - i hope the license went to good use, sounds like you found a good recipient?

dylane1; thanks for providing the information about the spot. i am interested in finding the most ideal place, and also interested in keeping momentum in the group. perhaps we could keep working on considering this spot, maybe for next months meeting?

unless there's a major objection, sounds like the evening of the 23rd at friendly st market, they do have internet, and i'll bring a whiteboard. we can do lightning talks, or someone can present, or we can quash bugs or do whatever we need to do.

there's no expectation that we should have all of this figured out already, we're a new group!

Not that new....

joseph.muennich's picture

It is nice to see so many of us Drupal folks coming out of our hibernations... as well as so many newcomers to the group.

I look forward to joining in again when someone plans a gathering on an evening I am free of kid-duties. I will likely put out the call for a less formal get-together soon (with only a day or so notice) for anyone else who is free and might wish to meet up.

Until soon,
- Joseph

I plan to go down there on Thursday for their "happy hour mixer" and I'll talk to Mark about setting up monthly meetings. I think they'd be happy to have us. Anyone interested in meeting the folks at CodeChops should come to the mixer as well - they're a great bunch.

I've updated this Meetup. For more details, see the full listing:

The latest update

zkrebs's picture

OK, so here's where I'm at. I have secured the spot for next Wednesday Night at Friendly St. Market, if we want to go there.

There's also the Code Chops event happening Thursday.

A new bit of information is I will be unable to attend this months meeting due to unforeseen circumstances. Thus, we can have someone from the group carry on the banner for Wednesday! Or, you all can meet at Code Chops on Thursday!

Hope this is useful information to those hoping to see their fellow Drupalers this month.

Meeting on Wednesday still on?

snathaidmhor's picture

Hey everyone,

With the coordinator of this Wednesday's Eugene Drupal meeting not able to attend, are we still meeting Wednesday?

If not or there's no / squishy agenda, I'm probably going to a BBQ.

Thanks :)

It sounds like

zkrebs's picture

There is no replacement, and the owner of Friendly St. Cafe has called me today to double check. I told him it was off.

So, I apologize again for not being able to make it.

I recommend that we put off the meeting for another time - we can resume next month, or perhaps someone can schedule another meetup date? It turns out that Wednesday nights are no longer free for me, due to a scheduling change I can't reverse.

There is mention of a Code Chops meeting tomorrow I believe (see above posts), which might be a way for the group to meet at least informally (and meet new people).

I haven't heard of any

Dylanotron's picture

I haven't heard of any meetings for quite some time. I'll be in town for the next two weeks, though, if you'd like to get together and talk about Drupal.

Wow!

viator's picture

This group has a May-November vacation!

Hey, I'm new here so I was hoping to see some traffic in this group. Anyone care to start a discussion?

Other things took priority

zkrebs's picture

Still lurking around -- not much going on in the Drupal Department. I installed the views_slideshow_galleria module recently, and customized their free theme to not be purposefully crippled - was fairly fun.

Sounds like fun...

viator's picture

I'm in the search for the perfect VPS server set up, I've built my server 9 ways now and while they all love Drupal 7 core, they can not install any kickstarts out of the package they have too many errors!

Have you tried BOA

Great refferal!

viator's picture

Thanks,

That is exactly the type of thing I was looking for! I just wish it wasn't a memory hog since I'm paid up for the next year on this box and I only have 512K of dedicated memory and another 512k of burst.

I'm going to try it out now and I'll let you know how it goes.

Eugene Drupal Get Together

mlmoseley's picture

May I suggest getting together at a pub or restaraunt? If I'm going to go out in the evening I'd rather eat and socialize and talk instead of going to what looks and feels like another business day meeting. I'll be glad to call around and see if there's a place that has a room or an alcove we could use. Is anyone interested?

5th St. Market

treebressen's picture

I probably wouldn't be attending as i'm not actually a techie, but one space that might work well is the room just off the open dining area at 5th St. Market. I was part of another group that used that space years ago. Not sure how late it's open or who the contact is, but anyone could call the market to find out.
