Start:
2012-04-25 19:30 - 21:00 America/New_York
Organizers:
Event type:
Online meeting (eg. IRC meeting)

It's now routine: We're again using the Google+ "Hangout" video conferencing tool. Check it out in advance at http://plus.google.com/ where you can get a Google+ account, plus any audio/video plugin for a smooth setup.

The hangout is limited to nine participants. Try to sign up in advance on this g.d.o event page.

I'll be the host (John P. Weiksnar / jpw1116). There should be a status message with a "Join Hangout" option on our new Google+ page, “Western New York Drupal User Group.” A headset/mic will probably give the best results . . . and please mute when typing. Quiet dogs in the b/g are usually a nonissue.

AGENDA:

“D-con Revisited” -- For those who were in Denver for the festivities--or not. We will cover the shape of things Drupal and where it is this mass is heading (namely, D8).

“BarCamp Roch Revue” -- See above, only in the (585).

Any remaining vernal business

If you have any questions or want to test out your setup ahead of time, look for me online before the start time.

As always, please don't forget to sign up.

-John

I added you guys to a Wiki that I created. I don't know if you wan to post this event to the Remote Meetups groups but that would be cool if you did

That's helpful and we always invite participants from outside of WNY.

That said, the signups so far—with a week to go—already seem to be strong. I'm not sure if there still is a limit of nine in a Goog+ hangout; we're almost there.

We will have to see if May is a brick-and-mortar meeting; if so, we can at least attempt a live virtual tie-in. Normally it's been one mode or the other.

Do you think the guy with the

Do you think the guy with the mustache will show up again?

I'd say we have to live with that eminent possibility.

Still, it should be a good (virtual) meetup tomorrow night.

4/25/2012 recap. . . .

The meetup was a success, with practically no intrusions from mustachios (Nick, the 3-D virtual one doesn't count). We are envisioning the last Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. as the default meetup time.

That doesn't preclude having in-person meetups again. We're finding though that the Goog+ hangout is practical in itself. Ohio, Ontario and Connecticut were aboard with the Empire State core.

Stay tuned for info on the next DrupalCamp WNY brainstorming. We are eying October again, and that means planning has to rev up soon.

Rough notes of the meetup. . . .

Topic: D-con Denver

JP: It was an excellent opportunity to see companies and people. What stood out: Drush 5; Symfony2 in D8, D8 Core and Config in text files. Earl Miles had a good presentation.

JS: Jeff Eaton's "Five Layer Burrito" talk and the Symfony session stood out. He said that Symfony2 will impact routing.

AW: He missed the Symfony session but went to a lot of Responsive design ones. Jake Strawn's BoF was great, and other BoFs on podcasts were valuable, as were the keynotes.

KW: He noted how busy it is, and how the release cycle is speeding up.

JP: Brought up opinion on the proposal to remove jQuery from core.

NG: Drupal releases have progressively gotten slower, particularly on the back end.

JS: Jeff Schuler from Cleveland was at D-con Denver. He also mentioned the Drupal Contribution Ladder, to develop learning materials on configuration management and D8 multilingual initiatives.

JW: Jacob Singh's session "The Elephants Are Coming" pointed out the possible bifurcation of development by hemisphere in the next few years.

JS: Victor Kane covered Symfony2 in D8

JS: The Web Services team is working hard but they are in a bubble.

JP: He is glad it was Symfony2 and not Zend.

JP: The Configuration Initiative for D8 faces limitations with XML (numbers don't show up) and will probably use YAML, not JSON.

JP: The Configuration Initiative group is looking for funding.

JP: The Drush 5 session was very cool. It has its own web server, and Drush Make is now in Drush Core . . . but is buggy.

JS: Microsoft was introduced by Dries

AW: It seems pathetic.

JP: Advocates Join.me for screen sharing and Google+

JP: Git Tower (for Mac) works. He is happy with Source Tree for version control.

NG: He uses Coda and Kaleidoscope for diffs, again on the Mac.

Topic: BarCamp 4/12 at RIT: it was not a success but one of the bigger, persistent topics was social networking.

We discussed the prospect of a second annual WNY DrupalCamp and the need for a core group of planners.

JP: MyPlanet Digital from Toronto may be interested in funding.

We agreed that getting a task list posted would be a good first step, with dates.

The idea of Everett Zufelt of the W3C as a keynote was brought up.

The monthly meetups seem to be working fine remotely; we adopted a tentative "last Wednesday at 7:30 p.m." schedule.
