Suggested content to cover

Roger Saner's picture

This is great, theamoeba - hope it goes well! I might pop in to the Joburg meetup next week, since I'm there. A suggestion for the Cape Town meetup is to have a definite goal in terms of what content the group is going to cover. My suggestion is a "How to install and configure Drupal."

You know, have a Mac and Windows version of MAMP (or XAMPP) available so that people can install it right there, and get introduced to phpMyAdmin, apache and php all in one. Then guide them through a basic drupal install, and then do something somewhat useful, like setting up a blog, changing the colours of Garland, adding a new user role and playing with some permissions.

That's my R0.02 ;)

How about working through this article

In fact, simply working through this article, Building a Drupal site in 10 steps will be a good place to start for newbies.

An even better way to get started with installing drupal is to use <a href="http://acquia.com/downloads'>Acquia's stack installer for Windows or Mac.

thanks for the suggestions.

thanks for the suggestions. i think that is a good idea. i think perhaps it would be a good idea to if we seperated the meetings between the "experts" and the "noobs" and then have leaders for each of those groups. I think this would be better because then the people who know will then be able to chat about more advanced stuff and the beginners can learn.

What do you think?

Hi, this is great :)

May I make another suggestion as a theme for our next meetup?

  • Each person presents the site(s) they are currently building, the business logic/concept, the audience we are aiming for, how we are monetizing the site and what modules we are using to achieve the idea.

Then perhaps we can all brain-storm per site and suggest new ideas.

Any takers? Maybe we can run a poll between us of what we would like to discuss most ..

Looking forward :)
Lilian

yeah that would be cool.

should we pass around a paper and pen at the meetings with suggestions for next meetings or should we run polls online?

something i would like to

theamoeba's picture
theamoeba - Tue, 2009-06-02 13:41

something i would like to learn about, perhaps someone in the know could help me on this, is how to write modules that create hooks. in other words i can create a module that makes hooks so i can write another module to connect to it. i would also like to learn about creating views 2 relationships with a contrib module much like the votingapi module.

i have not been able to find any suitable documentation about the above 2 things. perhaps someone could share on that?

Hiya
I will be at the meeting. I am learning drupal and constantly doing it so hopefully by the time of the meeting I will know it better. Hope that isn't a problem as I wont be presenting anything.
Thanks
Tyrone

Hey guys,
We're working around the clock getting our new template framework ready for launch, so unfortunately will have to give this one a miss. Hopefully we'll have some decent weather for the next one, so we can organize a braai or something.. :)

Cheers,

I'm just a newbie

sideswitch's picture
sideswitch - Thu, 2009-06-11 15:49

Hey oaks and oakets, I'm just a newbie and don't want to waste your time, if it's just one other Guru and me, as it might be wasted on me?
I'm a pal of Roger Saner, who is quite the Drupal Evangelist, and mentioned this meetup.

I usually use Joomla as my main CMS if I don't make my own small one, and thought I'd pop in to see what's up. I'm the type who loves to learn, so I was keen to pop in.

What do you think? Let me know.
