Discussion and way forward for the Drupal Johannesburg group
We had a great meetup last night, and although it may have felt a bit like a "trustee meeting" to quote Willem, it's a necessary evil to spend time on figuring this stuff out. After the discussion we had 2 cool showcases from George and Greg - thanks for the effort you guys put into it. What follows is a listing of the group goals, portfolios we identified and who's going to be coordinating/running each portfolio, as well as some specific tasks.
Please note that while we've identified some people to be coordinators in each area, anyone can help out anywhere if they have time - just let me or the coordinator(s) of that specific portfolio know.
Group goals
- Grow community: reach people new to Drupal and reach out to other groups
- Meet regularly: once every month - alternate between 2 types of meetups:
- 1 will start with a group planning/feedback/followup session followed by a technical session
- the next one will be the main high quality drupal group event, possibly on the weekend?
- To contribute back, locally and globally (e.g. to the Drupal project)
- Build technical competence
Individual goals
- Learning
- Sharing/Teaching
- Networking
Portfolios
Operations:
Coordination/organisation on a high level
Charles, Lawrence, Guy
Meeting content
Anton, Shaun
Attendance
Leveraging g.d.o, facebook, meetup.com and drupal.co.zato co-ordinate meetups.
Charles is happy to carry on with posting of event details, but if anyone else is keen to help out here, let him know.
Local website: drupal.co.za
Lawrence, Richard, Noto
Greg (and maybe Carl) to help with an initial SCRUM session.
Use the website to organise, build and focus the community
- Use organic groups to provide points of focus for regional groups, eg Joburg and Cape Town
- Set up a "How you can help/get involved" page
- publicise the drupal irc channel(s): #drupal-support #drupal-themes and #drupal
more info: http://drupal.org/irc - Set up newsletter [Richard]
Marketing/Advertising
Much of this will be focusing on using drupal.co.za as a marketing tool:
- Encourage people to add sites drupal sites they've done;
- Allow for aggregagation of drupal sites directly from other sites (our own personal/business sites portfolio pages)
- Publishing of case studies
- Getting a newsletter going, ideally something which can send out mail and appear on the site [Richard]
- Encourage engagement on other social networks
- Reach out to other groups - go to other group meetings (27 dinners, net squared etc.) do drupal presentations and generally fly the Drupal flag.
- Carl and Anton to look at getting badges done that we can post on our own sites: Drupal Jozi, Drupal Cape Town etc. and look at aggregating twitter etc. on drupal.co.za
We don't have a coordinator for this portfolio (although there is some overlap with the drupal.co.za site) - any volunteers?

Thanks to everyone who attended the meetup, and for everyone's input - I think we're starting to move in the right direction here :-)
