How to Make Acquia Slate Fluid?

Please please please! I have zero training in css and have learned the hard way (many hours trying to modify .css file) that makiing this theme even a little bit fluid is problematic. My site really needs this functionality. I know that when using 1, 2, or 3, columns things have to match the header content wrap width in order for things to line up, but how would one break that? Say, I don't care if the sidebar left and right don't match the white header.jpg but I want the sidebars fixed and the middle content fluid to the screen.

Can anyone explain which options to change in the css file? After reading some of your posts in other topics I know the knowledge base is there. You guys surely can make this change. I think if one of you helps me out many can also benefit from this. It is something that I believe this theme is lacking. It's hands down the best free drupal theme out there. Just this one thing would really make it awesome if I could change it.

Please help!

Slate will be difficult to turn into a fluid width theme, simply because of the importance of the header image. Being able to make the header image fluid is very difficult, and without being able to do this, you will find that the layout will look a bit strange, as you will almost certainly have a situation where the main content will not line up with the header width.

Slate fluid

Well in fact the example is in the css itself. (postscript part)
The main feature you have to add is to cut the header image into 2 parts.
attached are the diff -Sh that can be used to patch the style.css and page.tpl.php.
page-front.tpl.php needs equivalent blocks as page.tpl.php.

NOTE: the files are diff files not .patch so you either have to rewrite them or patch by hand.

Has anyone done this and tested it to see if it works? I'd be interested in having it fluid too.
