Creating a Newspaper Website with Drupal **FIXED**

Hi all,

I'm relatively new to the website development, if you call what I do that. So far I've started with ridiculously difficult projects and worked through them with a need to know bases. If I want to accomplish something then I need to know it and then I have to read until I understand it. My first project was with Joomla http://www.thechefsgalley.com/social and my second project was using vBulletin http://www.thechefsgalley.com. Now I want to create a professional looking newspaper that could be used for one of the many yacht industry publications. After lots of reading and some research I decided I want to create it using Drupal rather than Joomla which I have been using and have become familiar with.

I wonder if it would be worth the while to document the growth of my project? Things and concepts that you all are accustomed to and take for granted are really still quite abstract to me. I've started reading books on Drupal and have an overwhelming feeling of huh? What would be the best place to write about he experience -- in a group like this or in an independent blog? Perhaps, I could take a moment ever day and just log a few problems I had to solve. Doing it in a way that might be helpful for other people to follow and learn from.

Well..... those are just some thoughts. I'm happy to be here.

Hey, this was my first

Hey, this was my first post.

Twelve weeks, ouch. My head is still hurting, but I have some resemblance of a website online. I would have taken a little longer but the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show was this week and everybody wanted the site online. We are alive at http://thetriton.com

It's built using OpenPublish. I stripped it of the open calias system, which would have worked will for this organization except it had some bugs in it that I didn't feel like working through.

There is an elaborate workflow system that is not active since no one will use it for some time. Also, the events have the signup module setup but until we have more time to manage it, it won't be active either. The forums are deactivated until we have more time available to moderate them.

There is a ton of stuff I want to do to the site including moving the menu and header outside the body wrapper to extend across the screen.

If your curious..... we are still on the shared server I used to develop the site. We are getting 1,200 unique visitors and 12,000 page hits a day since we went live two days ago. Between 10am and 11am I have to shut off the frontpage news rotator and things run fine. We get upwards of 100 anonymous users at one time. Openx slows it down so much.

We have a VPS and paid $50 the company to help get the site setup on it, but it's been a nightmare for me. I'd take crap about them, but I'm hoping that they come through for me and redeem themselves. I would just try another hosting company but it's hard to be flippy-floppy when your using other people's money. I have never used a Unix command line prompt before last week and the last few days have been quite the crash course. It was explained in the install.txt how to configure the files using chmod o+w but I read that three months ago and didn't pay much attention since it worked fine on a shared server.

Last night I installed a clean copy of core Drupal before I discovered the chmod o+p issue. I erased it and tried to restore the home directory onto the VPS and now I get 403 errors.

As soon as it's on the VPS, I'll start to develop it in the second phase. Let me know what you think. I'll write more about the experience but right now I'm getting back to learning Unix. :)

I to am stuck into creating a newspaper, but looking through other efforts I soon realise how good your paper looks and do I say it feels.
After spending a few years selling advertising on rags and mags, what you see really does matter.
