Event type:
User group meeting

Drupal meetup, compared to Drupal Happy hour, is more structured. Please see the agenda for the coming meetup. Going forward, we will host the meetup on the second Wednesday evening of every month.

1.) Self-introduction:
We let everyone to introduce themselves, talking about what they do with Drupal, and why they come to this meetup. Also, we will pick one simple question related to Drupal for that particular meeting, and expect people to offer their own experience or opinions.

2.) Lighting Rounds:
Have a topic you can present in 5 minutes (with 5 more minutes for questions)? The basic idea is there are patterns for developing sites the "drupal" way ("what would drupal do? etc."). Tell us a quick 5 minute recipe for how to put the Drupal "bricks" together. Theming techniques or other things may also be appropriate. Propose it below. Make sure you mention it is for the "lightning round" otherwise it might get confused with a longer presentation.

3.) Presentations:
In this section, we will let people to do a 30-minutes presentation on their own topics.

  • Responsive Design case study with Lejia.me ----willkaxu
  • DrupalCampChina preparation meeting

4.) Job Affairs and Open Discussion
In this section, we will let people talk about their job openings or their looking for new opportunities. Then, we open the discussion to the floor.

If you have have any ideas or proposals for lightning round topic or presentation, please leave your proposal in the comments. If other people express enough interest in your topics, I will update the list above, and mark you down as the speaker.

Meeting Location:

Please register an account on groups.drupal.org and sign up for this event.

Barcamp (http://www.techyizu.org/) has decided to work with us to collaboratively launch the first DrupalCampChina in March, 2013. We will have a short meeting to discuss more details.

I'd like to talk about the reasons of using the responsive design and how to make it by the case of lejia.me.

miloyz's picture

Weijian's picture

  • Symfony?

skyredwang's picture

Hi guys, Thanks a lot for

dydave's picture

Hi guys,

Thanks a lot for your feedback and proposed topics.
Looking forward to hearing the talk on lejia and discussing DrupalCampChina in March, 2013.

I just wanted to share a personal opinion concerning hibersh suggested topics:
I understand it must be very exciting to see all these new things, components and tools integrated with the next Drupal generations and series. All these frameworks, symfony, twig, etc... seem to be very interesting to explore as entire projects by themselves.

However, I'm wondering whether these frameworks wouldn't be too distant from some of the most common Drupal programmers preoccupations, at the moment.

I can surely see the relationship of talking about these tools and how they would integrate with Drupal in the next version, but there are probably still many possibilities of seeing things changing on the way and I guess in more than 2 years there won't even be any real adhesion to Drupal 8 in China, due to its very high requirements on client (JS/HTML/CSS) or server side (PHP and server versions/setup), not to mention the corresponding learning curve that is going to be even steeper since people are not only going to have to learn a new framework, but multiple, with depencies between components.

Drupal 7 has only recently hit a plateau of productivity and is finally starting to gain more adhesion in China, even though it's not going that fast. I would guess D7 is still going to be used, probably for the next four years in China, if not more, and could very well be considered as one of the versions that could federate and earn the most adhesion from the community.

In general, I would personally recommend that we try to stick with beginner to intermediate level kinds of topics and mostly focused on Drupal 7. This would allow to get us perhaps a little bit closer to our overall goal, which is having more people understand more things about Drupal in this community and get a wider participation/adhesion.

Therefore, for the time being, I would personally greatly appreciate if you could perhaps suggest other topics, more concrete and actual.
For example, it would be great if you could give your talk on the Concept of Entity once again, since I think a year ago, really few people at the meetup had any clue what it really meant and what it changed in the construction of sites or modules. This time, there would perhaps be interactions with the audience instead of a long monologue.
Especially, a lot of work has been done in this area, since the last year, for example, around Entity Translation, Entity Revisions, Entity Construction Kit (that wasn't mentioned in your talk last year), etc...
Then, next year, or later, depending on how things move with technologies, there would perhaps be more people in the audience that would be prepared to hear things about Drupal 8 and its components.

Once again, this is just my personal opinion on your suggested topics and I would be glad to hear your comments and feedback, or what others would have to say.

Thanks very much for your participation.

Cheers!Looking forward to

Cheers!

Looking forward to hearing your talk about entity related handy modules at next(maybe) meetup.

Hey dude, I was actually

dydave's picture

Hey dude, I was actually thinking of you :)

Would you be interested in carrying out this presentation?

It could be the following chapter of the introduction to entity concept you did last year, but this time, it would be: State of the entity concept in Drupal 7.

  • What has been done in this direction [in 2012]?
  • What have been the efforts and community initiatives?
  • What modules resulted from the introduction of the concept of entities? [Entity translation, Entity revisions, Entity Construction Kit, etc....]
  • How has entity influenced Drupal 8 and its structure?
  • Other items to be discussed

I'm just suggesting this, since your presentation last year was really good, but few people attended or really understood it. Additionally, it seems you would be ready to give another talk at the Meetup, so I thought it might be a good idea to focus on a topic that you previously approached, for this upcoming meetup.

In any case if can't do it this time, we will try organizing this talk for a future session.
Thanks again very much for your feedback!

Drupal as cloud computing

Weijian's picture

I'm interesting this topic. It seems that there are few information about Drupal as cloud computing framework, especially as SaaS. I can only find one module 'Cloud' related from Drupal web page. But I have no change to try right now. If someone is familiar with this topic and could share some information, it'd be better. Thanks.

I recall Keith Yau, giving

dydave's picture

I recall Keith Yau, giving us a very interesting talk about CDN and Drupal. Perhaps you could try to get to bring back his talk and this time try to focus more on Cloud infrastructures, since I would assume this is a topic in which he would probably be more familiar.

@keithyau: Hey Keith, would you be interested in looking into this request further?

Thanks!

Man, I recently doing cloud

Man, I recently doing cloud computing, i can share things about cloud computing as well.

BTW, I am in ningbo, if the meetup is in weekend, i can come.

Wait for me !! HAHA

HI all, just an update, I will be there next Wed. Give me a little time to talk about Cloud computing and what it potentially can do with Drupal

Lighting Talk On Getpantheon and Drupal Development

aglobalwander_'s picture

I am willing to share my experience using getpatheon.com for Drupal develoment and workflow. I am using this within an educational context and with middle school students.

Available Cloud infrastructure services/solutions

dydave's picture

@scottosan45
Looks like you've got a typo in your comment link URL.
(Not sure if you could edit/fix that)

...using getpatheon.com for Drupal ...

I would assume you meant getpantheon.com.

After taking a quick look, I think this would be a really good real case example of using a Cloud infrastructure for Drupal and getting a quick overview of the types of offers existing on the market currently (types of pricing, types of services, etc...) for this type of infrastructure/service.

Since Keith will be holding a talk on this topic, I guess yours would come right in line to share your experience and explain how things concretely work with Cloud services for Drupal, available on the market (your experience with getpantheon).

Sounds like our lightning rounds queue this time has got pretty crammed, which is really great, but let's hope there'll be enough time for everyone.

Thanks again very much for your interest and involvement.

Update to Fix URL

Hi,

Yes, I meant https://www.getpantheon.com. I don't seem to be able to edit my post.

As we discussed at our meetup today, I would post the criteria below for selecting the international speaker for DrupalCampChina:

  1. Speak good English (Native or bilingual proficiency)
  2. Spoke at multiple DrupalCon
  3. Well known Drupal contribution to the community.

If there is any other suggestion for criteria, please submit them down below before Sunday, Nov.18th.

I will email Drupal Association Community Cultivation Grant (CCG) with our selection criteria, and they will consider this in their reviewing process for our DrupalCampChina grant application.

miloyz's picture
