If you compare the run up to OP2 to OP3, it's an entirely different ballgame.
Why are there so few updates and discussions about OP3??
I'm using it, by the way, and I like it quite a lot, though I'm not fan of the default theme and finding Omega-based themes is difficult-- even when you're willing to pay.

I think there it is always
I think it is always good to have more choices when it comes to news platforms. Speaking only for myself, I eventually learned to replicate the core OP chores using a default Drupal install. As time progressed, I moved onto a non-Drupal platform which allows more time for actual content creation.
Part of the reason I left was
Part of the reason I left was when they started OP 3x and gave no way to upgrade the 2x. At that time I realized that I should keep using OP --
Both were negative for me, so I started getting away from it and developing a site based on core drupal only.
I eventually converted OP2x site to a core drupal 7 site and then never looked back. My other site is still running OP2x, which I will convert when I get some time.
But as ithacaindy mentioned, it may be good for some people to focus on content and use an appropriate CMS rather than worrying about constantly updating/developing a site.
I must acknowledge that OP2x was a great product.
