I put in my application for the Summer of Code last week with the following proposal
Proposal V1[PDF]
I based the goals of it off of the proposed idea at http://drupal.org/node/121112. After receiving some feedback on my application I revised my time line without much change in the actual proposal. The new proposal is at
Proposal V2[PDF]
In the downtime between comment posts on my application I contacted the current module owner and started to become more involved in the community, a few forum posts and more research on my project. With the second round of comments down and an extremely revamped proposal I am looking forward to more comments and assistance from the community. Well here is the third proposal and the abstract.
Proposal V3[PDF]
Abstract:
The Drupal BitTorrent Tracker project looks to provide Drupal users the power of the BitTorrent protocol when moving large files from their website to their visitors. The main outcome of this project will be a BitTorrent “invisible tracker” that integrates with Drupal through a module. The module will allow for the addition and removal of torrents, IP address management (banning IP addresses or ranges) and statistical presentation concerning information about the tracker (current seeders, leechers, swarm speed, active torrents, etc.). Special emphasis will be placed on minimal database interaction and ease of use. A user of the website should be able to download a .torrent file and use their client of choice without the worry of tracker failure. The same ease of use should be available to the administrator who should be able to add and remove torrents as well as view statistics concerning the tracker in real-time. With this module, Drupal users will be able to offer secure, fast, and large downloads to their users.

Damn you and your excellent
Damn you and your excellent proposal. I was much more terse in mine :P
As performance will be an issue, what bootstrap level are you planning to use?
I'm glad you got in, Chris
I'm glad you got in, Chris :) This means I'll still be able to profit from my own proposal ;) :)
Whenever you need testers, let me know (in IRC or by mail). And I'll get you in touch with the original BitTorrent module (for 4.6 and with lots of non-Drupal-ish code) developer.
Great proposal, and
Great proposal, and congratulations on your acceptance! I can't wait to see the finished product.

news?
Hi.
Any news on this? And what about "download" statistics, i.e. what is one disadvantage of offer downloads via bittorrent that one doesn't see how many people download the actual data, not .torrent files. That is, if you run a tracker (that's why I was searching for a tracker module for drupal) you can know this statistics; well close enough anyway.
Cheers.
Update: For anyone that finds this before finding the actual (at least I think it is) module project page.
I am currently actively
I am currently actively developing my SoC 2008 project, but when the timer is up on that I have a rather large set of changes that will be rolled in the module. Some of these are already in place, but testing takes time. There should be an RC version our a the end of August.
