Locations, in more detail

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Now that we have a more members of the group (about 40 more, total 108, though not all are active), I think we should restart conversations about DrupalCon Asia-Pacific locations.

In order to keep discussion focussed, please consider locations very seriously before suggesting them. We should be looking for a place with;

  • a suitable venue for a 500-2000 person conference, with 2-6 tracks (concurrent sessions), keynotes for all attendees, and 2-6 days in length
  • Drupal events (camp, summit, mini-conf etc), especially larger national ones with more than 100 attendees
  • appropriately experienced professional event management company(ies) with a track record, or individuals prepared to commit to the equivalent under a contractual commitment
  • individuals and/or communities who would be committed to making the event successful, probably on volunteered time

Other things that would need to be considered – probably later – are;

  • venue availability for dates that do not clash with important religious days or holidays, and would be suitable for DrupalCon
  • venue costs and other major expenses
  • estimated attendance from the city, country, neighbouring countries, and AP region
  • lingual, religious or cultural barriers and how they might be managed

For anyone who has joined

For anyone who has joined more recently, you might like to review these older discussions on locations;

Also, I forgot to add to the list above (I added it just now); experience running Drupal events is pretty important, particularly larger national events with more than 100 attendees.

Experience with Drupal and/or open source events

As we commented before, since Drupal users who are running open source events are also willing to help organise Drupal events, their experience is also very important for this project. For example, Bevan talked about this to a Drupal user who organises Linux events in Japan, and who kindly can help with his experience. There are others like him from India, etc.

I'm guessing that to be

I'm guessing that to be accessible to developers from throughout the region it would have to be located somewhere between Manilla and Mumbai. Anywhere Japan/Australia/New Zealand would be excessively prohibitive for most folks from Indo China and India (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Singapore might be a good choice. Is there a Drupal community in Singapore?

There is a Singapore group listed in Drupal local groups directory: Asia-Pacific, and also some people waiting to form a meetup group in Singapore.

Where do we suggest locations/city

Is there a wiki page or a thread where we can suggest the city for DCAP ?
