Drupal Meetup? Jan 18th-20th

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Greetings, all. I'm coming up to Boston for work in a few weeks and I'd love to meet up with some local Drupal geeks. I'm Ryan Price (@liberatr) of the Drupal Easy podcast. You may recognize me from DrupalCon DC or Paris, DrupalCamp Chicago 2010, or Do It with Drupal 2008. Down here in Florida I've worked with Popular Science and Bonnier, and now I do Drupal Training for small groups or companies that want to hire us, with my partner Mike (@ultimike).

I will be staying in Kendall Square on the Cambridge side. Other than that, I rode a bus in to Boston once, and that is all I know about the city. I am getting in Sunday night and leaving Thursday morning via Back Bay train station.

Pluses: Local food, good microbrews, Lobster (lobstah?), getting to meet anyone from MIT Media Lab.

We're actually putting together a Florida DrupalCamp February 20th-21st, if anyone wants to get out of he cold for a few days.

Also, does anyone know of

liberatr's picture

Also, does anyone know of Drupal people in Schenectady / Albany, New York? I am headed there also to see a client, and I'm curious, since it seems pretty close geographically speaking.

Greetings Ryan!

Hey Ryan, our "normal" meetups in Boston are on the first Tuesday of the month, but I'm sure there'd be a group of Drupalers in the area willing to hang out & talk Drupal while you're around!

I'm in S. NH, and make the drive down for all the meetups I can (45 min drive) and I'm always interested in any combination of Drupal discussion + beers.

I'd also love to try and make

I would also definitely be down for any sort of meetup. Just let me know the whens and wheres, and as long as it's in the evening, I would be game.

I will probably have the

liberatr's picture

I will probably have the least amount of stuff to do Wednesday night, but I also know that I am normally tired after a few straight days of teaching.

Monday or Tuesday could work too. If there are meetups for other non-Drupal groups, that may be a factor in picking the date.

I am free all three nights, so I kind of need someone on this list to suggest something cool, and when.

Tuesday Jan 19 at MIT, Let's do it!

susan macphee's picture

Hi Ryan,

Wonderful that you are touching base with us. As Jake said, we just had a meetup last Tues but let's do a special one just for you!

How's Tues Jan 19th at 6:30 at the Stata Center work? It's public space with wifi and we can pull some tables together. In the meantime, maybe one of our MIT friends can book a formal meeting room. I'll make a inquiry about your Media Lab wish too.

Let us know if Tuesday Jan 19 works for you and we can announce as an event with the tentative location.

For fun, we could break across the street at one the Boston area's best seafood restaurants where there's all the cowda and lobsta you can dream of.

Cheers, Susan

BTW-Where in FLA is your camp?

Sounds great to me - we don't

liberatr's picture

Sounds great to me - we don't need laptops, per se. If someone wants to see my "Drupal on your TV" demo, I'd be happy to show off, but I am just as happy socializing and chilling out after 8+ hours of training.

http://2010.fldrupalcamp.org - we are holding the camp in Orlando, Feb 20-21 - it's our second year. http://twitter.com/fldrupalcamp

Me Too

If I can swing it, I'd like to attend for two reasons: 1) to meet people, 2) I may be doing some training soon, so I might pick your brain.

I am currently in Waltham and the bus stop running at 7:00 and I don't have a car, so I'm not sure about logistics.

commuter rail or maybe someone else on the way can vrrrrm you back?

Thanks

nancydru's picture

Thanks. The train station is about 5 miles from where I'm staying and that can be a brutal walk this time of year. However, the problem may be resolving itself.

No where near a drupal expert

Mike Kennedy's picture

I don't that I will bring much to the table, but I would really like to sit in, and listen.

Cambridge Brewing Company is a few blocks up the street if you are staying at the Marriott.
Tommy Doyle's right is right next door, has decent food, and the best bartender in Cambridge. Sheena.

+1 for tommy doyle's; good

I will definitely be there.

I will definitely be there. This will be my first Boston Drupal Meetup. I am looking forward to it!

Sounds promising

Since I now have a gig over in Technology Square, my being there is a good excuse to go use their heating for the day. But I will definitely need a ride back to Waltham from there.

b.good in Harvard SQ is great. GREAT burgers and the workers there are EXCELLENT.

Cambridge Brewing Company is nice if you like bars :)

Hi all, I am new to the Boston drupal scene as well (didn't know something like this existed). I need some help with themeing - I don't know what to do! :) Is anybody willing to help me out at this meetup, or should I wait until next month? I'm creating a site for a college club sport's team and need to get it up and running in the next few weeks...

Thanks!

If you are willing to trek up to Harvard

(just two stops up on the Red Line), Charlie's Kitchen has lobster for much better prices than Legal, as well as great beer and burgers. There's also Grendell's Den, which has half-price food from 5 to 7ish and also good beer. Both places are really great for hanging out with beers and socializing/talking Drupal; neither's the best option if it's important to have WiFi access/work on laptops.

I'm definitely down for a Tuesday night meetup - I'm on the Red Line during the week.

I would be interested too

Not sure what the status is, but if anything has been solidified, I would love to meet up as well. Wednesday wouldn't be so good for me personally, but Monday or Tuesday are perfect.

And if something does get solidified, may i request that it get added as an event on the calendar? It would help me figure out my schedule since I hook the Boston calendar with my Google calendar.

Thanks, and I look forward to seeing you all.

Lots of suggestions are out there

susan macphee's picture

Hi, Lots of ideas are out there, in addition to my MIT suggestion. Ultimately Ryan needs to choose as he is our guest with the short window of time.

Ryan, you name it, and we will turn it into a scheduled event so people can plan accordingly. Can't wait to meet up!

Hi Ryan,

Nice to virtually meet you. As I work at Media Lab, there are a lot of free communal MIT spaces for us to congregate around campus with open wi-fi, some requiring advanced room booking, others not. If I can make a suggestion: maybe what we can do is have a 2-part shin-dig: an informal meet-up around 5:30-6:30pm-ish. Then social/fooding part at 7:00p. People can opt in for either/both.

Informal Meet-Up: 5:30-6:30pm

MIT Stata Center http://www.csail.mit.edu/ - bunch of brown booths we can occupy; people can drop in when they can.
It's a Frank Gehry-design bldg. that houses compsci and ai labs.

Food: 7pm- ?

Option 1

Grendel's is not a bad suggestion; their half-price deal is actually Sun-Thur, 5-7:30pm and then 9-11:30p according to their site.
http://www.grendelsden.com/

To herd our group from Kendall Sq. to Harvard Sq., it would be take 30 min. total and we'd prob. take the T.
Food/drinks are affordable, you'd be amongst two prestigious campuses in one day, and you can be a little touristy.

We'd have to promptly order to make the 7:30p deadline and then the happy hour 9pm time just may pop around again haha.

I'd prob. call them in advance that evening to let them know the number of people in our group to make things more efficient. :-)

Option 2
(If we opt for this food choice, we can make the informal meet-up go longer!)

CBC or Cambridge Brewing Company - http://www.cambrew.com/
Attractive to beer fans, takes prob. 15-30 min. for the herd to walk over.
Many local Kendall Sq. employees, from tech to biotech, hang out there.
There's Flat Top Johnny's next door for your spontaneous game of pool.

Tuesday 1/19 works for me.

Jeannie

Jeannie, This "Option 2" of

liberatr's picture

Jeannie,

This "Option 2" of yours sounds really good - I am biased to the availability of craft beer.

I'd be happy to meet up at the brewery itself - their menu looks great.

Either way, it's Tuesday night. I'm very happy to start the evening at MIT - I'd love to see the campus in person.

CBC, Tuesday?

liberatr's picture

I think you guys already have a regular monthly meetup, I was hoping for something more social.

EDIT: I like the idea of meeting early at MIT (5:30), then migrating to some dinner and beers (7:00+) - as suggested by Jeannie and Susan. I like the sound of Cambridge Brewing Co, as suggested by Jeannie and Mike.

Tuesday night. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone.

Cool, I should be there!

As long as beer is on themenu...

himerus's picture

I'm still game for whatever we decide as long as there are beers available!

Have we decided when we are actually meeting? 5:30? 6:30? Stata Center?

That's where I'll be going,

starshaped's picture

That's where I'll be going, unless someone here says otherwise!

Does anyone know if there's any free parking around the center? I can always park where the meetups are, but I forget how far away that is from the Stata.

Short walk

ChrisRut's picture

It's a pretty quick walk from the Hayward St parking lot: Google Map (0.5miles~10minutes)
But you might be able to find parking on Amherst St or Ames St. if your lucky.
Also Google Maps "walking directions" don't relize that you can cut thru buildings and cut your time in half:

  1. Walk up Amherst St from the Hayward Lot
  2. Turn right on Ames St
  3. Cut between the triangle building (66) and the long rectangle one (68) - Streetview
  4. Follow the path to the right, you'll run right into the Stata

Or if you really want to get crazy you can skip Amherst St and walk thru the back of the Hayward Lot and cut thru E23 & E25 to shave some more time off your walk.
.... Anything to save a few steps... I am lazy.

p.s. Count me in.

Tuesday 1/19 it is!

finkatronic's picture

Hi All

Tuesday sounds like a go for an informal, casual get-together. No agenda; just a bunch of Drupal folks!

In the interest of planning, let's meet at Stata Center 5:30-6:30p.
For those that will come to dinner at CBC, http://cambrew.com- we'll be there at 7pm onward.
[POST A COMMENT IF YOU ARE DOING DINNER ONLY SO WE KNOW HOW MANY SEATS TO GET!]

Check out Chris' great directions regarding suggested parking if needed; sometimes there is street parking on
Vassar St.

Stata located here (map):
http://whereis.mit.edu/?selection=32&zoom=16

It looks like this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wfm_stata_center.jpg

There's a "main corridor" inside; look for us (see pics above); most likely we'll be near this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Stata_Center-20050310-2.jpg

I'll dupe a version of this comment to the main Boston groups page for those who missed this thread.

See you then!
Jeannie

I'll definitely be there

Looking forward to dinner and drinks!
