At last Thursday's Drupal meetup we talked a lot about what we wanted to get out of the group, and I've thought about the responses a bit and had some subsequent discussion with folks who were there. So I'd like to summarize a bit and lay out some proposals here, and get your feedback:
- We have beginner, intermediate, and advanced Drupalistas in our group: we want them all to get something of value.
- We would like to meet twice each month.
- Putting 1. and 2. together, my current thought is to have 2 regular meeting times per month: one of those meetings will have a presentation or workshop geared more toward Drupal beginners, and the other will be geared more toward intermediate/advanced users/developers. That way, hopefully, people will get something appropriate to their level at least once each month. Rank beginners whose eyes glaze over with the geeky stuff could choose to come just on the beginner dates, and vice-versa, but everyone is always welcome of course.
- Based on previous feedback about meeting dates/times, currently I have a plan where we meet on the first Tuesday evening of each month at 7pm, and the third Wednesday afternoon at 4pm. So we'd pick one of those days for the beginners series, and the other for the intermediate/advanced series.
Beginner weeks
Evan Lovely and I have spoken about a progression of beginner presentations that we're prepared to deliver, and of course we welcome any of our more experienced members to collaborate on presenting as well. We envision a 2-part 'Getting Started with Drupal' presentation which will cover the very basics of Drupal concepts and jargon, demo hands-on the different aspects of the basic Drupal system and what you can do with it, etc. We'd build from there in subsequent months to more involved techniques/skills, but keep the focus on the folks who are getting started.
Intermediate/advanced weeks
For the non-beginner weeks, we're not really thinking of a progressive curriculum, but more any presentation that's beyond beginner level. Things like module building, learning to theme, demoing a site you built with advanced Views or Panels techniques, video in Drupal, using Drush to manage your site, etc.
For each meeting we're still thinking it's good to have some time for presentation and some time for informal chatting/sharing/networking.
What do you think of this arrangement? Would it work for you? Should we try it?
If so, I'd like to know which date/time is better for our more beginning members. So please respond in the comments.
Our next meeting will next Tuesday, March 2 @ 7pm (location TBD) so I'd like to get this settled ASAP so we can prepare for that. (And sorry for the late notice, I've been away for 4 days!)
Onward Montana Drupal!

Sounds Great
It all sounds great, Andy. Thanks for working it all out.
I'm sad that I missed last meeting and that I'm forced to miss this upcoming March 2nd meeting, as well. I'm still on board for as many meetings as I can make, however.

You'll be missed
I'm looking forward to when you'll be able to join us again Scott. Would love to have you do a presentation on how you did the meal planning site!
beginner drupal
I love the beginner group idea. The 4:00 time can usually work for me.
Sounds GREAT!
Both tracks sound fascinating. I really appreciate the willingness and effort to be so incredibly helpful to those of us who are neophytes just trying to get up to speed.
I suspect there could be serious interest in the broader community for the Wednesday sessions. I bet there are a number of groups with Drupal sites that are languishing in inactivity because their current owners have little clue how they work.
The days/times are great. (I've got a lot of personal flexibility right now, so it doesn't matter much to me if it moves/changes, esp. after 4 pm.)

PS - Andy - you're right : the book is great - thanks for the recommendation! Perhaps it would be a good "strongly suggested text" to go along with the Wednesday sessions?

Beginner group
Hi all,
The 4 p.m. time works best for me for the beginner group. I might be able to attend some of the 7 p.m. meetings, as I'm curious to see what people are doing with Drupal, but it won't be as consistent.
Can't make the March 2 meeting, but I'll keep my eyes peeled for the next meetup.
Thanks for the help.

I'll be there Andy. I have a projector do you want me to bring it?
Glad you'll be there!
It'll be great to see you and have your input at the group.
Not necessary to bring projector as the library provides one.
See you on Tuesday!
Looks great - see you there!
