Hey there! I'm Brock, also not at the conference, but wishing I was.

I am

kasiawaka's picture

I am at the conference and I missed the Drupal Queer meeting :(
got excited by the Drupalchix meeting and number of women attended that I lost my focus on checking the board with the latest BoF announcements ...

I am going to Jillian's tonight and I wish I would know who is who there. It is always so much easier to approach people when you know at least sth about them ... Anyway, I am from Ottawa, Canada and used to live in Poland. If anyone spots me at the DrupalCon SF or other place and wants to chat, I am an extrovert! ;) (that means I won't run hiding from you, I will love you for talking to me ;))

Oh hey!

lkleinberg's picture

Didn't see this before Jillian's but glad we managed to meet up anyway! Hope to catch up with you at some point tomorrow.

This was a great idea. Many thanks to the agitators, instigators and compatriots for the BoF and the group. Let the Drupal Mirror Ball shine!

Heya

It was great to meet/chat with folks at the BoF as well as the gathering at the place in the Mission whose name I forgot last night. I'll also be around through the end of the day Weds before heading back home to Boston, so say hey if you see me around (@asigrist on Twitter also works).

More about me, me, me!!!

Hey, gang -- good to meet up at the con. In the Drupalsphere I'm a writer, with some instructional work from traditional publishers (Lynda.com, Peachpit Press) and B2B pieces from Drupal companies (TopNotchThemes, Mediacurrent, Phase2 Technology, Acquia).

I was born in New York, went to college in Ohio, lived briefly in England and The Netherlands, spent most of my adult life (23-40) in San Francisco, and moved to Oberlin, Ohio about a year ago.

Queer cred, FWIW: I was pretty much out as bi in high school in the late '80s. My first book was "Bisexuality: A Reader and Sourcebook" (1990). I was active in that community starting with the 1987 March on Washington and petering out around 1993, around when I named the national bi magazine "Anything That Moves". :) ) I got a bit re-involved in the late '90s, particularly with the gay/bi FTM scene in San Francisco. I believe I started the first mailing list for partners of trans men in 1998.

I'm tgeller on Twitter (which I almost never use), personal blog at http://tgeller.livejournal.com, and in various other places. See you around,

It's awesome that y'all organized a BoF and created a group! I'm here at DrupalCon all the way from Urbana, Illinois, USA. I've been contributing accessibility improvements to Drupal 7 core through the work I do at ojctech.com. I'm gay and partnered with a 3-year old son, and I'm also a City Council member in Urbana. It's great to meet you all virtually and have a group to stay in touch.

edibleoffice's picture

It was fantastic meeting people today at the Drupal Queer Lounge BoF. Let's keep that disco ball spinning by staying in touch! I want to invite all of you in town tomorrow to experience quintessential San Francisco and hang out in the great outdoors. Come listen to music, learn about an inspiring urban renewal project, and get dirty at Earth Day at the Urban Farm - 2:30-6:30pm at Hayes Vallley Farm 450 Laguna St. @ Oak. http://www.hayesvalleyfarm.com - Free! If you're staying downtown, it's a quick bus ride down Market to Laguna St, then walk North 6 blocks.

Having a hard time posting

asigrist's picture

Almost every attempt I make to reply to this thread (and start a new one) is being met with "Your submission has triggered the spam filter and will not be accepted." - once in a while, I get the "Drupal thinks this might be spam" and I get a captcha which lets me actually submit...though the last time that happened, I got a white screen upon submit and my post didn't stick...anyone else having trouble?

i can't post either

hifalutin's picture

Grrrr... I've been trying to post as well, but I get the same error message. In fact, it's been rejecting this comment. Fingers crossed...

Yay! it worked!

That's one reason I can't use Mollom!

lizhenry's picture

It rejects too many comments and there doesn't seem to be a good way (yet) to put all questionable comments into moderation, rather than rejecting them...

If you're having issues with Mollom...

webchick's picture

Post over at http://drupal.org/node/684424 with your nickname, the time you tried to post, etc. so that the infrastructure team can check the logs and try and troubleshoot.

sorry folks :(

greggles's picture

Please stick with the site, even if it [edit: where it = the captcha!] is annoying. It's great to see this group formed and the discussions going on. I apologize greatly for the annoyance and hope you can understand. We need a proactive spam protector here to prevent the hundreds of annoying e-mails that would go out otherwise...In these cases I didn't see any long entries so I have now increased the number of log entries that we keep and next time it happens we'll be set to find the sessionid values from the log and debug it with Dries.

Both Mollom and G.D.o have some reputation respect elements to them so it may take a few legitimate posts before things start working well for you.

And yes, as Angie said, please do post to that Infrastructure issue if it happens to you again.

It sounds like groups.drupal

kasiawaka's picture

It sounds like groups.drupal is using some spam Captcha like Mollom that only kicks in when it suspects the submission is a spam. But in this case, it should do some verification that is visible to you, so what is happening certainly sounds odd.

I am planning to go to the Earth Day at the Urban Farm but I am till 5pm at the CiviCon so I may get there quite late (closer to 5.30-5.45).

Unless they changed it, it is

hefox's picture

Unless they changed it, it is using Mollom; it's been known to have issues at times (I'm fairly sure it wouldn't be hard to find posts about mollom + g.d.o + :( ).

It was good to see so many

I actually would have loved to meet the queer folks, the drupal chix -- I was so starry eyed at all of the classes that I didn't make it to anything. I'm based here in the bay area. I work on a Drupal site, and I write for a publication that is hosted on Drupal (http://www.OaklandLocal.com) - And I host a social network for masculine identified women and transmen -- currently on ning (http://beyondstud.ning.com) but I may be moving it over to Drupal upon the news that ning is going to a paid format :(

I didn't really head to any of the evening events, I've been commuting a great deal lately (I don't drive anymore, long story LOL) so I have just been trying to get some time to sit still.

I really enjoyed this conference. I came away with an excited sense of opportunity with the platform. I also publish a blog (http://www.bLaKtivist.com) - It's currently on blogger. As I get more comfortable with working on the system completely independently, I may host my social network and blog from the same domain.

Anywho - grateful to have this forum with you all and I hope that it will prove a great resource for us all.

Hi folks, sorry I missed the BoF

dww's picture

I was too busy at the conference to even notice that this BoF happened. The only BoF I made it to was the one on "Drupal for Revolutionary Change" that I organized. I presented on 3 panels during DCSF itself, gave a lightning talk at the core developer summit, did tons of other work, sprints, and discussions. But I'm glad to see this as a new group on the site, and am happy to join. I'm in Oakland, so any Bay Area events I might be able to make it to. For folks who don't know me, you can check out:

I've thought of myself as bi for over a 10 years (although mostly non-practicing) and for a couple of years I was polyamorous, but for 8 years I've been in a monogamous + hetero relationship (which has both been wonderful and at times a challenge). Things are shifting now, but it's not clear how it's all going to shake down. ;) Since I identify with the "B" from the title of this group, and I certainly qualify for "Drupal" part, I figured I should join and introduce myself... ;)

Cheers,
-Derek

I am totally new to Drupal,

missmax's picture

I am totally new to Drupal, and have been a web designer and trainer for a bunch of years.
This was not only my first DrupalCon, but my introduction to Drupal as a whole.
I tried to grasp as much as I could, and totally feel like a newbie!

I missed the Bof, because I didn't even know what BoF meant until after it was over! I was so focused on the sessions, that I assumed that BoF groups were for developers, and didn't even think to look at the board. Typical Forrest Gump moments here. I'm so sorry I missed the queer connections, and hope to really connect with you guys here on line.

I'm using a new non-profit/ pro bono project for my Drupal first project, and hope to use all the wonderful resources here and those mentioned at DrupalCon to help me get started.

So glad you're all here, and making yourselves known!

Best,
Max

I too missed the BoF !

My name's Angie Byron, aka "webchick" here, and I am pretty much obsessed with Drupal and try to do everything possible to make it more awesome and bring more awesome people into the community. :) Currently, my main role is as the co-lead for Drupal 7, the next release of Drupal coming out, uh... sometime... in the next couple of months, hopefully. ;) I'm also on the Drupal Association board, act as a "community manager" of sorts within the Drupal community, develop modules and core patches, blah blah...

I met my now wife on the Chainsaw Records website (Team Dresch, Sleater-Kinney, The Need, etc.), and we've been together for 11 years now. :) And I'm pretty sure she is at least part saint for letting me do Drupal all day without killing me. ;)

Unfortunately, my Drupal life doesn't leave me much time to do anything else, so I'm not very involved in the LGBTQI community at all. :( But it was really great to meet some fellow queers at Drupalcon; hopefully we can do a little get-together like that each conference!

'Hello World!'

alexiswatson's picture

Wound up missing the BoF, but I thought I'd poke in and introduce myself. :>

My name's David Watson - though I typically go by "caughtexception" or some variation on Twitter and elsewhere. I've been learning and using Drupal for about a year now, as half of the Web team at EMPAC @ Rensselaer. After spending my first few months there evaluating what other CMSes can('t) do for us, we've recently decided to migrate all of our static content to Drupal, so it's a very exciting time for us!

As far as where I "fit in" here, although my only lasting relationships have been hetero (been engaged for six years, getting married in a week), I've gradually drifted toward identifying as pansexual over the course of the past decade. I haven't really been involved in the community up until now - in fact, this would mark my first "coming out" of sorts - but that's something I'm hoping to change.

Serious props to webchick for putting this together, and to everyone for turning the space into what promises to be a very welcoming, supportive environment. Looking forward to meeting you all!

Hi, I'm Alice from the UK.

Hi,

I'm Alice from the UK. I'm hoping to get to the Denmark Drupalcon later this year to meet up with some of you lot. I'm a queer poly person currently living in North East England, and together with a few others have been working on building a queer-friendly social network using Drupal for the past few years.

We've gotten rather distracted and ended up setting up a web hosting/development business, but we're still working on qvox.org and are always looking for more developers (particularly people who can help finish making it look pretty, and get it being used). We've also put up a mailing list server, with qvox-discuss being a good place to chat to us.

I'm @kaerast on Twitter, IRC and Skype and kaerast at kaerast dot info on Jabber.

From Canada

kasiawaka's picture

So I didn't make to the BoF either, although I was at the SF conference - forgot to check for the new BoFs when running between sessions.. Too bad, it would be great to see you all there, face to face ..

I am a web developer, with a few years of Drupal experience. I work for a not for profit organization in Canada, Freeform Solutions that provides an IT support for other not for profits. I also work with other open source systems like CiviCRM, ImpressCMS etc. I am a big fan of open source and not for profit world - I believe in giving and things that profit the community.
Recently, I got myself into more client faced role and I am still wondering if I like it.

I am generally addicted to anything related to technology, so my amazing wife and friends keep me sane, trying to distract me from sitting here too long. I am actually trying to work normal human hours now, so I can enjoy the world and people around me. I am married, we've been together for 5 years.

Also, constant home renovations prevent me from becoming a total geek ;)

Glad to meet some of you at the conference (Leslie, Angie, Jack) and looking forward to meeting even more!
My Skype is kasia.wakarecy, twitter: kasiawaka.

My day job is very similar,

kaerast's picture

My day job is very similar, and most of my time is split between two companies based in northern England. One of the companies provides web hosting and web development for mostly non-profits, getting them up online and helping them communicate better. The other works more locally, mostly setting up infrastructure for non-profits - getting their office systems setup nicely, providing training and matching people up with cheap computers and cheap/free training.

What happened to comment edit option?

kasiawaka's picture

Am I just too tired to think or is this right that the abiilty to edit my own comments on groups.drupal.org disappeared?
Or I am mistaken with drupal.org website?
Anyway, just wanted everyone know that I shouldn't post my twitter account information because I don't tweet, I only follow important people or groups .. that's right, I am a follower so you won't get much out of listening to me .. unless you like silence ;)

Hi all! Honestly I clicked

stephthegeek's picture

Hi all! Honestly I clicked on this thread not at all expecting to post in it, but after reading all the comments figured what the heck :)

I'm a female who has identified as bisexual since I was 14 and it dawned on me that that's what lusting after both genders probably meant ;) I've also been in polyamorous and/or kink relationships for much of my adult life. I'm from Toronto but my husband and I currently live in Berkeley, CA while I'm attending grad school.

I've never been a part of any LGBQTI community or group, but since Drupal has become such a huge part of my life (4.5 years now, currently co-founder of TopNotchThemes), I thought it might be nice to introduce myself in this context too!

Same here!

danigrrl's picture

Just a note to say that this is about my story too, although I'm only fairly recently becoming more open about it (the poly/kink part, not the bisexuality - hard to hide that one). I'm originally from Providence, RI, and now live in the Boston area with my soon-to-be husband.

I've been a creative director and designer since about 1997, doing websites since about 2003, and started working in Drupal in early 2009. While I can certainly wrangle my share of code and put together a mighty fine Drupal site, I don't consider myself a developer, nor do I particularly want to; I find that trying to do developer-centric stuff takes my head out of what Drupal can be and throws it headfirst into what I can make it do, which ends up leading to less effective work. So, I partner with developers where I can, and look for budgets that allow that.

Anyhoo, it's nice to meet everyone, and great seeing you all at DrupalCon SF!

Hello

seanr's picture

Hi, my name is Sean Robertson.

I was at the BOF, but thought I'd take the opportunity to reintroduce myself here since so many couldn't make it. I am a Drupal designer/developer from Washington, DC. I build web sites for Democratic campaigns using Drupal full time. I built my first Drupal web site in October of 2003, and have been at my current job for just shy of five years now (I've been doing web design in general for twelve years). When Dries asked people whose lives Drupal had changed to stand up, I was one of the first to jump up - that web site six and a half years ago ended up winning an award that was noticed by my current employer and the job of my dreams literally fell into my lap. ;-)

I am 31 years old, am gay (came out ten years ago), and have a boyfriend of three and a half years who lives in Baltimore. I do a lot of volunteer work for gay rights organizations including a couple of Drupal projects for the Human Rights Campaign (Clergy for Marriage and All DC Families). I also do all of the design and development work for the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club and am currently in the process of producing new brand identities for Virginia Partisans (updating the logo I original made for them seven years ago) and National Stonewall Democrats.

If you're interested, I have a much more personal biography posted on my web site:

Hey there, everyone. I'm

nikkiana's picture

Hey there, everyone. I'm Nikkiana.

I sadly didn't make it to the BOF on Tuesday... let's just suffice to say that I had a really really really really bad day that day which kind of derailed all of my best laid plans for Tuesday afternoon.

According to my d.o profile, I have been a Druapller for 3 years 46 weeks (as of April 25, 2010). My primary specialty is theming.

I was born and raised in New Hampshire. I moved to Brooklyn, NY last June. I identify as bisexual (though history has put me on the more het-acting side). I'm polyamorous. I tend to be a lot more involved in poly related activism/education than in the LGBTQI sphere. I have to say, I'm extremely encouraged to see this group here on g.d.o. :)

My shy introduction

Bronwyn McL's picture

Hello all,

I loved meeting everyone at Drupalcon. List me among the relative "newbies" to Drupal. My primary interests lie in the arts community. I have a BFA in Photo-video and am currently pursuing a second BA in Art History. As far as GLBT issues, I have been involved with GLSEN KC a few years back and my girlfriend is a college professor who helps to mentor GLBT students and oversees a GSA at her community college.

I currently work for the Kansas City Art Institute (in KCMO) where I got my degree(s). Last year our website was rebuilt with Drupal by VML (an amazing company based in KC.) I manage the site from the client side and help our staff edit and create content. I also have a small interior site built on Drupal that I want to redo with all the new tips and tools I learned at this conference. Like most everyone else, I'm entirely self-taught in Drupal and all things web design and I have much much more to learn. My drupal goals- besides learning it inside and out- are geared towards exploring Drupal to build student/ artists' communities.

The best thing about the conference, of course, was meeting real live people behind this community. Before this conference, I had been very impressed by the immense scope of Drupal and feeling a bit intimidated about where to dive in. I can say that after meeting people who were in the same pool as I was, all with such a great attitude of optimism and excitement, I am very inspired now to just dive in.

Thanks,
Bronwyn

Oh, how I wish...

eff_shaped's picture

... I could have been on that drupal lesbian pubcrawl in SF. But, no! Stuck in London, UK.

I'm web designer for an lgbt charity: The Consortium of LGBT Voluntary and Community Organisations. http://www.lgbtconsortium.org.uk [edit - oops got the link wrong first time!]

I met Drupal when working in California a few years back.
(@webchick - I was working for Edutopia when Lullabot visited the Ranch :)

Drupal and I still a love/hate relationship. It seemed like a good thing to use for my organisation's website redesign... we're currently looking for a drupal mentor to help us add more functionality.

I study part time for my masters in HCI, so I can move into my true vocation of user experience work.

Would love to network with UK queers and non-profits around drupal stuff.

greetings to y'all
Franny

Wish to meet more of you!

BarisW's picture

Thanks @webchick for starting this community. I finally found some time to give a more thorough introduction than my previous shout. I haven't met a lot of Drupal gays yet and I'd love to get in touch with more (especially in the Netherlands).

I'm a Drupal Specialist at Sogeti Netherlands and Board Member of the Dutch Drupal Association. I work with Drupal for over 4 years. First as a themer, and lately more as an overall specialist. Since a year or so I try to bring back some of the knowledge I gained by writing patches for Drupal 7 core and I even started a few projects myself (like Termcase). I co-organized DrupalJam 6 in Amsterdam (an event with over 300 attendees) and attended several Drupal events. Too bad I couldn't make it too DrupalCon SF, but I will be there in Copenhagen!

Before I started working at Sogeti I had my own company which focused on web development for the gay community. It's name was Sixcolored (Straight media design). See http://drupal.org/node/151194 (the site is offline now).

I have a relationship with my boyfriend Niels for almost 10 years now, and I'm now 29 years old.

You can find me online at my blog, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Kind regards, Baris Wanschers

wow!

jessebeach's picture

I'm really excited to see such an amazing queer outpouring in the Drupal Community. Here I thought I'd find no solidarity at d.o. I'm a themer, new to Drupal, but not to theming. I used to work in WordPress (still do here and there). I'm a CSS NUT! Crazy for this goofy language and very excited for all the possibilities of CSS3 on the horizon.

I've seen a couple over TG folks on d.o (the ones who chose it from the AWESOME gender selection dropdown for personal info - for this, Drupal is one of the most progressive orgs I've come across, imho), but I wonder if there aren't more. I'm MTF, but if I had to declare a doctype, it would be Transitional at the moment, not Strict :) I don't validate at work, yet. /end metaphor

Really looking forward to keeping this community vibrant.

Wish I had made it to the BOF

danmuzyka's picture

I was at Drupal Con SF but missed the BOF. :( I'm glad to see that there is a community forming here, however, and perhaps there will be future meetups for LGBTIAQ peeps.

I first used Drupal in early 2006, but have really gotten into it in the past two years. Right now most of the Drupal work I do is theme-related, but I do a variety of other web-related work such as usability and information architecture, training and documentation, project management, support, etc. The sessions I attended at Drupal Con, as well as the ones at my local Portland DUG, are helping me to become more comfortable with Drupal's architecture and will ultimately, I hope, help me do more advanced work.

I am jealous of how many of you have partners or significant others. ;) I am single but looking for a BF.

Hey, Just an ally here, but I

Hey,

Just an ally here, but I wanted to say how fantastic this thread is. I'm a Drupalchix member, and I think that it's great to support and nurture the somewhat hidden diversity within the community. It also goes a long way to making everyone feel comfortable to be themselves within the community.

THANKS to hifalutin for making the Drupalcon BoF so lovely and welcoming with snacks!

So happy to start to see groups coming together in drupal, especially after this last drupalcon. such a huge change - 6 months ago I would not have believed that there are so many queer nerds in drupal. :) but there ARE!

Want to share one of my highlights of drupalcon.

So, a bunch of us went dancing in the Castro (which was a perfect classic San Francisco night.) San Francisco shuts down at 2 a.m. as some people may know. This usually boots people out to diners, and usually results in people giving up and going home. But! several of us represented out true queer nerdiness and we got back to the hotel, got our computers, and sat together at the chx coder lounger. webchick came and sat with us :) All was well.

We wrote code and did other geeky things with the other Drupallers. (granted, it was 4 in the morning, not my best code..but still :))
It was so sweet and wonderful, and probably one of the best moments of all of Drupalcon.

Also possibly a world first: going to a late night code lounge covered in gay disco sweat. (Don't you think?)

I want to dedicate that experience to all of you who might never imagine geeking out with your queer and diverse families. Queer nerds really do exist. This drupalcon I learned that if you are passionate and really care about something there definitely are people who feel the same way, and if you keep at it and keep looking, you really will eventually find what you are looking for. (edit: Or the world will evolve, and it will find you. Something like that!)

//introduction
i am a drupal developer, and also obsessed with the open source process & how people get involved - and what that experience is like.
This summer i am organizing a hands-on drupal learning project the Drupal Open Garden Project http://garden.localbiology.org -- you should all sign up!!! (by may 25!) We will be building Drupal things for community gardeners & urban agriculture people. It is gonna be FUN! (July 1 - Sept 1, 2010. free, 2-8 hrs per week commitment, fun projects, lots of Drupalling!)

Queerly: when i can, I like to be femme. It's actually a lot of time & work though. I kind of bounce around in the gender spectrum, sometimes by choice, but not always. I miss queer communities. Similarly, I like & miss the radical & experimental feminism of burlesque. But I do like (even more) spending all my time focusing on Drupal & open source related projects - and my Drupal friends are some of my favorite people in the whole world.

It is kind of nice to have a bit of 'home' here in Drupal Land!

Hey there!

Thanks so much to hifalutin and edibleoffice for organizing the BoF, to webchick for creating this group, and to everyone who made DrupalCon fantastic!

I’m a Brooklyn-based Drupal and CiviCRM developer and themer who works primarily with nonprofits and political campaigns. I'm mildly obsessed with online communication and usability — blame it on early experiences with Jef Raskin. Over the past 10 years I’ve worked with organizations with a wide range of missions, constituencies, structures and budgets, often collaborating with other web developers and graphic designers (shout out to jackaponte).

The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force's site was my first introduction to Drupal back in 2006 and I had the good fortune of webchick walking me through a site installation at DrupalCampNYC2, for which I'll forever be grateful. I later co-planned and managed the Drupal site, CiviCRM database and online communications of Young People For (YP4), a program of People For the American Way Foundation.

Recent clients include the United ENDA Coalition, the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, Al Fakhoora and the winning One Kalamazoo campaign. I also serve on the board of the National Youth Advocacy Coalition, which will have a new Drupal site someday soon.

On a side note, I'm on national tour with my (queer) band The Shondes, working and writing this from an internet connection in the van. We play Café du Nord in San Francisco tonight and are on the road until June — if you're on the West Coast or in the Midwest, come say hey at a show!

Accidentally "Straight" (kinda, but not really)

Hi all -

I didn't make it to SF, so I'm very glad this group was created. Thank you!

I have been an out, loud and proud lesbian for about 30 years. I met the woman of my dreams in 2002 and we married ("commitment ceremonied?") in 2003. Then, a few years ago, he became an FTM. An extremely closeted one. Rats. Now I just look like a straight chick to the rest of the world.

It took a bit of getting used to, but I have to say that it has been very, very interesting from my perspective. Before his transition, I would always dread people's reaction to my use of the word "wife", but I was determined to use it anyway. Now, no one bats an eye when I say "husband". (Although we aren't legally married, I still feel entitled to use the term.)

I thought the Expand options in the "Gender" profile field discussion started by webchick was fascinating. I'd say that most of the transgendered people I know would just check the box for their chosen gender, even if they aren't closeted about it.

As a woman who has been coding since (gasp!) 1976, I have, of course, noticed that the ratio of women to men in IT is quite disproportionate. Another thing I have observed is that a very high percentage of the women who do this for a living are gay. (Someone should do some research on that!)

Anyway, nice to meet you all!

:—)) Nice to Meet U
