TwinCities Drupallers have been planning to offer Drupal sessions at MinneBar
What kinds of sessions are you thinking of offering?
We were also going to tell everyone at MinneBar that we might have a summer geekout in August (with barbeque, right?!)

I'm all signed up.
We should do a "Why Drupal?" type of presentation for sure, and maybe a "Drupal 101", showing off how quick and easy it is to setup a basic site. Things geared towards a beginner to intermediate level audience are probably going to be the best bet.
Likewise signed up.
Good topics. Shall we start the plan at this week's Drupal Happy Hour? http://groups.drupal.org/node/61473

Minnebar Details!
It was great to see some of you at happy hour last night! Sorry we got the run-around from The Happy Show, but it was fun anyway. :)
Here are some details about Minnebar--they launched a new website here: http://minnestar.org/
Here's the minnebar specific page: http://minnestar.org/minnebar/
And the page to sign up to present a session! http://sessions.minnestar.org/
I'm really sorry that I can't come, but please let me know if I can do anything else to help prepare!

Nice - was just googling minnebar things, and found this old post by Twin Cities Open Circuit (2008) that Amanda/mndonx made: http://tcopencircuit.org/node/46
Minnebar Session Planning
At the Drupal Happy Hour we started to work out how we were going to 'do stuff' for Minnebar.
Minnebar is in 2.5 weeks.
As apatte said above: submit sessions here: http://sessions.minnestar.org/
It sounded like people were interested in collaborating on a few Drupal sessions, perhaps staggered through the day.
Themes that were emerging included:
I recommend that anyone who is interested take over one of these topics & enlist help (or propose others)
We can use this thread for simplicity...or make other topics if you want.
In general we would just need to
a. define a leader/organizer for the session
b. form little working groups for creating those sessions (self-organized)
c. make up a catchy title & write a description.
d. propose that description to the minnebar sessions list
Hopefully we can sort out the groups of people who are working on each session in the next few days.
In the meantime, I will contact Luke of Minnebar to find out what happens on the day of the event because that part is still unclear to me, at least.
Hope this helps kick off collaboration. Open to other suggestions if anyone has them.
time slot length
I will also ask how long the sessions are. We were guesstimating 45 minutes.
session length
45 minutes
Radical Uses of Drupal
I volunteer to organize the "radical uses of drupal" session which we will ask to happen near the end of the day so that people new to drupal will have a chance to learn about it. Amanda & I have been talking about that.
Trying to enlist Bec White who will be visiting from Chicago that weekend. Amanda has a really awesome prototype she may show. I would talk about what we will do this summer with the Drupal Open Garden Project.
Minnebar Newsletter
Just reposting Minnebar newsletter from yesterday that I found in my inbox:
"Sign up for a Session!
We've opened the registration for MinneBar sessions. If you're interested in a topic, chances are others are too. Types of sessions could include presentations (on a programming language, cool project, marketing, music, or anything else), panel discussions, hackfests, or meetups.
Leading a session at MinneBar is a great way to learn a topic, meet people, have interesting discussions, and practice your presentation skills. If you have never done it, maybe you should try!
If you are not quite ready to lead a session, form a panel with other or just review the exisiting sessions and indicate your interest in them.
Check the session list frequently as many more sessions will be added over the next several weeks. A session scedule will be put together the week leading up to May 22nd.

More tickets?
We found a block of extra tickets under Luke's couch. ;) Hopefully that will ease the pain some folks felt who didn't get a free ticket. Be sure to tell friends and collegues who may not have heard about MinneBar what it is all about and encourage them to sign up for the mailing list so they can be in the know. Also - be sure to let us know if you are not going to be able to attend but have a ticket so that we can release it to someone else.
We had a great response to our first foray into the start-up grant world. We've had over 30 applications and the same number of people submit applications and indicate interest in being trustees. Now's the fun part where we get these people together and get cool things started in Minnesota's tech scene!
The winners will be announced at MinneBar on May 22nd, at which time we'll also announce something else that is pretty cool too."

Session: Basics or Case Studies
I'm interested in putting together and/or collaborating on a session. Given the audiences and topics suggested above, I think either an 'Intro to Drupal' or a 'Drupal Case Studies' would be my preferences. Would anyone else like to jointly present on either of those topics (or suggest refinements)?
I think an "Intro to Drupal"
I think an "Intro to Drupal" and or "Why should I be considering Drupal?" would be a perfect fit for the audience, and a great opportunity for us to find and get more people involved in our local community. And, would be interested in helping organize and present.
Part of a broader CMS track?
Personally, I see a distinction between Drupal users and Drupal developers in that I understand the former and have no clue what the latter are talking about although they have my up most respect.
I see there was at least one other CMS already on the docket.
Introduction to TYPOlight - feature rich, accessible, Open Source CMS by Tonu Mikk and Phil Kragnes
I was under the impression
I was under the impression that MinneBar is really targeted at developers..
Minne*
tcindie - I do think that the people who talk about going to Minnebar are largely developers. However, I do think that the event itself has participants from a range of technology backgrounds - including people who are attending in order to hear about new ideas in technology...and to meet people.
The Minne* organization states this:
"We’re helping ensure Minnesota continues to be a great place to start and grow tech-based businesses. We do this by helping create and perpetuate communities of designers, developers, investors, business folks, etc. Here are a few of the ways we do it:" - with minnebar being one of their events (minnebar.org website)
So, I do not think this event is specifically targeted at developers. That may just be the community that created the camp, and therefore a disproportionate number of developers of all skill levels who participate & advertise the event.
And yes, the sessions tend to be geeky/technical - but again, it is a barcamp - it is what you make of it. The people who come to your session will hopefully be the right people. And hopefully we will all be prepared with great sessions that match the promise of our session proposals.
The nice thing about the conference is that the technologists come from a variety of backgrounds - and since there will be 900 or so people at MinneBar, this is a great opportunity to introduce Drupal & the Drupal community to more people in Minnesota.
hope that helps :)

watch out for the backchannel
hey everyone
learned that at previous minnebars there was quite a bit of mean twitter back-channel action going on in situations where the attendees did not like the sessions
a clever way to deal with this, offered by samirnassar was: at the beginning of your presentation - mention that you know there is a back channel & that you would love to know what it is so you, as presenter, can participate
of course, that depends on the situation - but i just wanted to put this out there. as you frame your presentations, being clear of who your intended audience might be might help if this concerns you
minnedemo had lots of developers and also lots of minnesota startups - which included people in all kinds of jobs in technology. so, i am very certain there will be many people who are coming to minnebar to connect & learn in earnest.
we are so spoiled in drupal since everyone is so nice & well-intentioned :)
Different titles
I think Intro to Drupal is a fine title, but to get the attention of people who may not be interested, how about something more attention getting? Something like, When Drupal is better than WP, or Amazing Things You Can Do With Drupal.

session proposals due
Just got an email from Minnebar (which all of you probably got as well)
It says that session proposals are due (submitted to website) by the end of the day weds may 19.
I assume end of the day means 11:59pm. (Don't see otherwise.)
They've re-opened
They've re-opened registration. If you didn't get a ticket earlier you might be able to still. Go, go, go. http://minnebar.eventbrite.com/
Not seeing any Drupal
Has anyone actually submitted session proposals? I'm not seeing anything in the current session list, but it perhaps is not up to date. If you've submitted a session please post with the session name and a brief description of content. Not much time left to figure things out, I can toss in a couple of ideas but I'd like to know what others have proposed before submitting a session.
we are about to post
Drupal Experiments session --- going to do that in the next hour.
Probably need an intro... and possibly a panel?
Hey folks,
The entire point of a barcamp is to follow a more participatory model, with more open discussions and fewer 'sage on the stage' presentations. That said, it's much easier and more rewarding to follow a presentation that is well-organized and substantiated. This barcamp in particular is extremely mature and well-managed, so it's good to come prepared.
Like a lot of us Drupalers, we're spread a bit thin around here at Advantage Labs ( Hence the help wanted ad!). For that reason, it's going to be pretty taxing for us to put together something that is as well organized and substantiated as I would like it to be. For me personally, this is the only chance get to catch up with many old friends who are always there, so I won't be all-drupal-all-the-time. But I have a few ideas that can help:
It's unfair to characterize a crowd of 800 people one way or the other, and I want to avoid setting up any predictions or expectations about what these folks are thinking. We're not mind-readers, right? However, I do know from experience that there are a lot of people who are very technical and very smart who are disillusioned with Drupal. And I'm hopeful that we can partially address this attitude.
I totally understand where this mentality comes from. Approaching a Drupal project the wrong way can lead to a lot of missteps and bad decisions. Such missteps can result in huge budget overruns, a seriously-overcomplicated project, or a costly re-working. Approaching a Drupal project correctly usually requires some up-front education, a trusty guide, and a willingness to understand a different approach. Many people, especially smart, seasoned programmers, don't see the point of all of this drama when they can just whip something up in Zend / Ruby / Python / whatever - thus, being smart and seasoned can actually be a liability.
A lot of Minnebar attendees are in the seasoned professional category, and they've tried and failed with Drupal or know someone who has. Many of these folks are just going to steer clear of Drupal sessions, and there's nothing we can do. It's worth pointing out that I did an Intro to Drupal session two years ago, and it was pretty well attended. At last Fall's session, there weren't as many people at the Intro session, and most of the attendees were already Drupalers.
In light of all this, other important topics would include:
* What you can get out of sticking through it all ( Community inertia, ongoing improvements in areas you haven't thought of, such as RDF, media handling, scalability, usability, etc. )
* Case studies, demonstrating same
* An intro session, with the above audience in mind
* A "Can Drupal Do...?" Q&A panel
I would be interested in participating in the panel, if nothing else. The objective would be to help clear through some of the FUD out there and provide succinct answers to questions about where Drupal is / is not appropriate.
thanks!
this is super helpful information. thx for sharing it!
it's hard to know what it will be like in advance - but definitely preparing ahead of time will really help.
I'm posting a panel Q&A
I'm posting a panel Q&A session now, I'll post back here with the details momentarily, if you want to participate on the panel let me know! I don't want to be a panel of one!

We just posted our session. We are thinking of showing some examples of Drupal combined with other things - we are currently contemplating spending half the time doing our demos/presentations - and then thinking of some discussion questions. see you all tomorrow!
very excited about this minnebar, which they are saying 'with 1000 participants this may be the largest bar camp ever in the US' :)
looks like the minnebar organizers created a drupal track all afternoon - so none of our sessions overlap which is awesome for other attendees.
this interdisciplinary bar camp is such a great opportunity for networking with the larger minneapolis network of developers - looks like there are lots of other good sessions
can't wait to talk about minnebar with you all after the event is over!
have fun tomorrow! :)
Have a good time all.. I'm
Have a good time all..
I'm not going to make it after all, have a new puppy I've got to stay home with
minnebar was awesome: wrap up: how did your sessions go?
Minnebar was really fun! Very well organized, people were very nice. Lots of developers, but there were also tracks for design, startups, other, and then another category I forget.
We presented 4 drupal sessions (each session had multiple presenters & good attendance)
To everyone who attended: what did you think? How did your sessions go?
Also...
* Kickstarting Drupalcamp: Talked with Jer yesterday about the potential Drupalcamp this winter...I propose it happens in the absolutely coldest part of the year. That way ppl who come visit will be able to brag about how tough they are. (mid-january) - also the art shanties happen then & the ice skating rinks are up & Minnesotans are in full winter regalia & hanging out outside the entire time (well, not me!)
Jump on in - just create a new 'discussion' in the twin cities group - and make it say something like 'Planning Drupalcamp Twin Cities' - then we will all pipe up and help out.(I'm not volunteering so that someone else will have the chance to start an online discussion on g.d.o - it's good practice! )
Joe S and I had been talking about it before, but it morphed into what we all wound up doing for Minnebar. We can make a list of stuff we would need to do.
Quick & Dirty Intro
Joe and I did the Quick and Dirty Intro to Drupal and I think it went pretty well. We had a full room at about 60 - 70, with people sitting around the edges. No-one left, and a few peeked in during, looking for seats.
So - overall - pretty good, I think. For next time: I would want to spend more time actually working with examples, editing things, etc., maybe even creating a content type and/or a view. Slides are at: http://docs.google.com/a/gortonstudios.com/present/view?id=dfwjrsf9_53df....
Drupal Experiments
There were about 25 people in our session (last session of the day)
We talked about Drupal as a framework for making experimental community applications. Joe Turgeon (@arithmetric) talked about connecting Drupal to other services & using Drupal as the backend. Amanda Luker (@mndonx) presented her modification of Ubercart's Point-of-sale and showed how you can use Drupal to stitch together a point-of-sale system for community bookstores. I gave a presentation about the Drupal Open Garden Project and how we will experiment this summer with learning & teaching Drupal together to build tools for community gardeners.
My slides are linked here: http://garden.localbiology.org/blog/admin/2010/minnebar-presentation
(Sorry I wasn't able to go to all the Drupal sessions - attended the hyperlocal sessions which were very relevant to the summer project. Steven Clift presented about e-democracy.org & connecting our neighbors to a shared local information hub. Alan Rosenblatt presented about working with twitter followers. Peter Fleck presented about posterous/seward community blog. made me wonder if posterous works w/ Drupal. must look into it.)
