Sydney User Group Meeting

I posted this in a more general Australia group but have since learned there is already a group set up here for Sydney.

I am very happy to organise a meeting somewhere near the CBD or Central. I think that would be the most appropriate location. I hope we can get at least one meeting before the holidays.

I'll check around for some venues with a feeling that there might be 8-10 people. If you have any suggestions for a venue and/or agenda, let me know.

Hey Dennis,

Thanks for getting the ball rolling. You might want to look at this thread http://groups.drupal.org/node/3416 for info about our last meeting. We were at the Hollywood Hotel last time which is near central. Personally, I'd like to find a place with a little bit more room to talk/chat since it seemed a little hard to hear people last time. Though, having something to drink/snack on helps with the social lubricant side of things. Not to put pressure on anyone, but do we want to have any presentation/talk type things this time? Or do we just want to hang out again?

A venue that is not too loud is a good idea. Friday night is usually loud.
I'm available Wed, Thurs night or on the weekend.

Venue and Date Selected

I have decided after a quick look at the response to the poll that those who expressed an early interest would prefer Wednesday night. To be honest, I have three Tuesday night meetings and one Thursday night meeting every month so one Wednesday night is a nice change of pace.

I have also booked a venue on 14 November. It is the New South Wales Sports Club on Hunter Street, just across from Wynyard Station. I am a member so I get the function room gratis and, it is a very nice room. I told them there will be 10-12 people there and the room will accommodate that but if it looks like there will be more, I can get more chairs or everyone can get cozy.

Now we need an agenda. Since this is more of an organisational meeting, I don't think we need to go too far beyond introductions and some idea sharing. In the future, I would like to see some very professional presentations along the lines of:

Tutorials
How tos
"My Site"

I am a newbie to Drupal myself so don't expect a lot from me except comments. I am doing QA on a very large Drupal/CiviCRM project, though and I think I have something to offer.

I will send out a proposed agenda for the November meeting within a couple of days.

Bad Date

Hey Dennis,

I quite liked the previously proposed date of the 22nd. Unfortunately, I don't think I can make the 14th. The venue sounds nice, so if the date doesn't change good luck with the meeting. Since its been awhile since the last meetup, I would suggest having a good portion of just "introductions/chat" time. Does the sports club have some sort of bar/concession stands for people?

Can you please make sure that these announcements are cross posted to the Australia group since there maybe people in other states that want to attend will know what is happening.

Here in Melbourne we get quite often a number of people from other states some months.

This is the reason why I have not allowed any other groups for other parts of Australia. The Australia group doesn't have that much traffic and when it does we will look at splitting it up. The Australian Drupal community is not that big. 1 group should be able to cover all of Australia and not fracture the community.

Yes I am a moderator, and the Sydney group got created before I go everything worked out for Australia.

I have vetoed several other groups as at this stage they are not needed. Later this may not be the case. I really don't want to fracture the Australian community in it infancy. It is still very small, and the total activity is not that great.

The proposed meetup date of Nov 14th is pretty close, but as a few people have suggested pushing this back a week or two, would a poll for a meeing date be more appropriate?
