John (jpw1116) was nice enough to snag a venue for us for the June user group meeting.

Please use the Sign Up button below whether you plan to attend in person or virtually.

Here are the details:

HD Video Cafe
5445 Transit Road
Buffalo, NY 14221
(716) 688-4933

SITE: http://www.hdvideocafe.com/
MAP: http://bit.ly/bVh9DD

Basically, they're a nice little niche place with food & stuff (+ coffee drinks, I believe...) in case you're coming straight from work and would like to grab something.

PRESENTATIONS

We could use at least two presentation topics/subjects, so if you're interested in putting something up on the projected screen (yes, they're prepared for us) and talk into the mic for the well-amplified people online (I'm furnishing these last two bits), step up in the comments.

If you're interested in something in particular, suggest it below - we might have somebody interested in sharing what they know.

Here's the gotomeeting info:

You can use your own microphone and speakers (VoIP) - a headset is recommended. Or, call in using your telephone.
- Dial 646-558-2103
- Access Code: 229-138-152 [also the meeting id]

Lastly: Meeting Password: use fending's contact form to request if you're attending online.

Possible Topic

zaglick's picture

8:30 on a Tuesday is doable for me since I get out of work around 3:30. A possible topic that I could present on is my recent roll out of a Drupal site for the Syracuse City School District http://www.syracusecityschools.com/. We are the 5th largest school district in NYS and it has been an interesting time for me setting up a site that will have a lot of non technical users. I have given interviews with the local paper so I don't think the district would worry about pulling aside the kimono for a local users group. let me know.

You're on

[Clarification: 15 June @ 7pm is the start time.!]

Thanks! That sounds like a great topic with a universal theme. (And if you have any custom code to show, I'm sure there's a subset of the audience that would be interested in that, too. You know, if the kimono opens that far. :)

We shouldn't have any problem passing the presentation torch back & forth.

. . .

Plus, the cafe welcomes laptops and we should have the big screen at our disposal.

Thanks!

Institutional implementation sounds like a great topic . . . especially if you cover any ambition to upgrade to 7.x!

For the benefit of those driving from points east via I-90, this month's location is conveniently before Buffalo proper.

Look for RT78/Lockport (Transit Road) and exit, turning left (north). After about 8 signals, there is a Target. HD Video Cafe will be across the street (on the right) just past "VALU."

Approval from the big boss

zaglick's picture

I have gotten the go ahead from the big boss to give the presentation, so I will get cracking on a presentation on some of the universal themes that have come up in our roll out

great!

Glad to hear - I'm looking forward to it!

addl presentations?

fending's picture

I've been thinking about a presentation to follow Zack next week, hoping to see some suggestions here. I'm happy to fill in the spot if nobody else has something, so let's seed that with some suggestions... If you want to present any of them, just speak up and grab it!!! Otherwise, I'll pick one / take requests / etc and merriment will result.

Suggestions:
- SEO Basics in Drupal
- Drupal Gardens
- Multisite in Drupal 6 (John W can talk about this in Drupal 7 with a measure of authority, too!)
- Panels v. Context

Thoughts?

Just sent a broadcast message...

The event signup number is low - did you sign up yet?

Remember, our hosts for this meeting are in fact a restaurant/cafe, so they'll have food & beverages avbl for purchase, in case you're wondering how to fit this into your busy schedule. :)

Also, I'm leaning toward the SEO Basics for the second presentation slot, unless somebody else would like to present!

I think SEO basics would be

I think SEO basics would be really helpful and interesting. I'd like to see that presented!

slide-age

fending's picture

Woops, dropped the ball on that one. I made some notes above that I won't reiterate here, but we did spend a bit of time on keywords exposing a competitive vulnerability (in the google adwords keyword tool sense, as I recall) and a few other things that weren't in the presentation itself. A loooot of people in the room had looked at or used SEO Checklist, so my more unique points are mostly to shoot for the upper left (Nielsen F being a guide for both people and search engines) and to look at semantic publishing as a sort of Next Frontier once your SEO is performant.

Finally, here are the Slides: http://bit.ly/bB5Fr9

And a book I should probably read: http://amzn.to/aCIESq ;)
