I've been asking folks to help with this for a while, but the situation is getting more serious (other projects are pulling me away and I will be offline for a while later this year) so I want to make a more clear request for assistance.
If you want to be the maintainer of the module, let me know but also prove that desire by helping in the issue queue and then you get to be the maintainer.
Note that as Pathauto maintainer you kind of also get to be token maintainer since the two are so closely tied.
The alternative is that I'll probably back out a bunch of the half-baked features I've added recently, strip it down to the bugfixes, and release a 5.x-2.1 and 6.x-1.x which would both be stable and relatively bug-free but not particularly moving forward.

the time has come...
So, the time has come to "fish or cut bait" as they say...I've received several contacts but precious little actual work.
I've marked my calendar for Feb 11th. If there's no help on http://groups.drupal.org/node/8318 by then I will roll back the url_alias_extra junk and start hammering on just bugfixes to make it solid for a 2.1 release that will be able to stand for some time...
In practical terms this means that two current functions that are in the 2.x-dev will be gone:
1) remembering whether an alias was admin created or not and, if so, respecting it and not clobbering it
2) deleting "aliases created by pathauto"
IMO they aren't all that major of features and there are other ways to implement them (though the other ways don't provide the same long term benefits so they don't interest me...).
