Event type:
DrupalCon

camcorder pro Calling all audio/video archivers: On Sunday, March 2nd at the Boston Convention & Expo Center, we'll meet up with the AV company to make sure all is well with our equipment and set up.

If you're interested in helping with audio/video recording and post-production, it would be great to meet you, find out what equipment we have available and coordinate how we are going to capture all 70+ sessions @ Drupalcon? We can also talk about feasibility of trying a live stream.*

So bring your gear and meet us in the lobby @ 4 p.m. sharp, near the security desk (to the left as you enter).

If you can't make it, don't despair. You can also meet us for setup bright and early Monday morning at 7:45 a.m. :)

If you have any of this equipment to lend it could be helpful, please bring it:

  • Laptop (for audio recording, video compressing and post-production),
  • Digital audio recorder (MP3 etc.),
  • Digital video camera of any type (we'll have blank MiniDV tapes on hand) and tripod,
  • External hard drive,
  • A/V cables and adapters, firewire cables, power strips and extension cords,
  • Mics (wireless or wired),
  • You :)

No live stream

sooz's picture

We won't have any live streaming at Drupalcon -- the bandwidth won't support it. Maybe next time!

* live stream

I'm still going to try at least an audio stream on my wireless data card (verizon not wifi).

Bandwidth and streaming

keith.kennedy's picture

sooz,
forgive me but if the bandwidth leaving the Boston Convention & Expo Center can't handle streaming it surely can't handle 800 laptops. I'm pretty sure it can be done.
I'm offering the use of my universities' streaming server, storage, and bandwith. We use the Real Helix Enterprise Streaming Server.
This means the streams would be REAL Streams. (.rm)
Thoughts?

Thanks for the offer!

sooz's picture

I'll defer this to someone on the organizing committee. I'm the event planner helping out with logistics but not the techie in the bunch.

RE Bandwidth, I was thinking the same thing

bonobo's picture

What about something lightweight, like UStream.tv?

Appointment Streams

DRScales's picture

I don't think the demand to view these streams as they happen would be high enough to justify the effort - we are looking to post produce the footage with the slides in order to provide a better experience + if we offer them live people may just not show up next year!

I'm not sure what your point

moshe weitzman's picture

I'm not sure what your point is. It sounds a lot to me like you just want this to happen and don't care to be bothered by the details.

On what are you basing your assertion "I'm pretty sure it can be done.". Did you talk to our network vendors? Did you calculate the number of attendees to AIIM and Drupalcon and anything else happenning at the venue?

Sorry, we won't risk the bandwidth for all attendees and of all events at the BCEC so we can upload a live stream. It is kind of you to offer streaming server. Unfortunately, we can't get the data up to you.

OK

keith.kennedy's picture

Just trying to help.
My job is all details. I stream every day and it has to work without taking down the campus network. My comment "I'm pretty sure it can be done." is based on real life experiences, over 10 years of streaming. It was a prelim statement to see if there was any interest. At this point I would not go over anyone head to talk to the others involved. If you don't think it could work, fine.
I'm not trying to step on any toes and this is my first Drupal conference.
sorry if it came off as I didn't care or anything else I didn't mean.
Have fun,
Keith

I will not get into Boston

smerrill's picture

I will not get into Boston until 11:xx PM on Sunday, so I guess I'll have to try for bright and early :)

This might be helpful

As you may know, I recently added some fields to the bio page to help with collecting info. Here is a view that displays all of the attendees that have indicated that they can help. You can filter by video or audio.

Is it possible to get a list of

DRScales's picture

all the 'yessees'? I will need to email them details for archiving if they are not part of this group.

Do you need these emails?

Do you need these emails? If so, I can provide them.

How many camcorders are

How many camcorders are needed? That list is quite large.

Please let me know, heading out tomorrow morning to catch my flight.

Thanks

We have enough camcorders so

mfb's picture

We have enough camcorders so far to film all sessions. However, some of these camcorders may not be in use for the entire week or won't be able to interface with the audio equipment in the session rooms (they need to have a line input as opposed to just a mic input). So we're asking everyone who can to bring their gear. This includes tripods, as some folks are bringing cameras but not tripods. Thanks!

Ok, sounds good. I will

elvis2's picture

Ok, sounds good. I will bring mine with tripod. I might have an extra tripod to bring too.

My camcorder does not have a line input. Just a mic interface on the front. It seems there are enough tripods for the session rooms. I have two tripods, should I bring them?

6 tripods from Acquia ...

sooz's picture

Acquia is providing six tripods ... so that will help. How many do we need per room? Two? 12 total?

Personally I think one

mfb's picture

Personally I think one tripod per room is fine.

Remember to label your equipment

sooz's picture

Something is bound to get missplaced ... don't forget to label your equipment with your name/email/phone number. :)

The registration/info desk is also lost and found so if you misplace something, check there. We'll also set up a thread in the forum.

I noticed a lot of my gear

mfb's picture

I noticed a lot of my gear isn't labeled, if anyone has one of those spiffy electronic label makers it could be quite useful!

I've got an Olympus D-30 audio thingy

Shai's picture

The emphasis of this thread has been on video. Of course, if the cams have line-ins then the audio can always be stripped from the video to make audio versions.

The Olympus D-30 I have doesn't have a line in, but it does amazingly well.

Is there interest in audio alone recording?

And oh... I don't get in to Boston until 9PM on Sunday.

Also flying in to Boston later Sunday

Have a video camera -- I'll check the mic in vs the line in --

Is there a place where those of us coming in too late for the Sunday trial run should go on Monday to see if our equipment is needed?

Thanks,

Bill

Hi Bill: We'll post

sooz's picture

Hi Bill:

We'll post something here in the group once we meet later today to let you know if you need to bring anything on Monday. Thanks!

Here's the listing of

mfb's picture

Here's the listing of archive.org items where everyone can/should upload their audio and video: http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=DrupalCon%20Boston%202008

Find the item for which you have file(s) to upload and login to archive.org using the email address and password at http://groups.drupal.org/node/9283 (if you cannot access this make sure you're a member of the Boston2008 group, if not ask a group admin to add you).

To add files, find the link on each session page, "Item Manager" click here. Then click checkout -- edit item's files (non XML). You will get an FTP URL. login to this FTP URL using any FTP program (archive.org has some instructions/recommendations on this). When you're done uploading files you must open the HTML file in the FTP directory in your browser, this will redirect you to a checkin URL and the item will be checked back in so others can check it out for further modifications/additions.

The file names you upload to archive.org can only use certain spaces, for example characters aren't allowed.

You can also click on the "Edit item" link to edit metadata such as the session description.

I posted Dries' keynote this

mfb's picture

I posted Dries' keynote this morning,
http://www.archive.org/details/DrupalconBoston2008-TheStateOfDrupal

I was wondering what folks think about filesize of video uploads.. this version is 564 kbps and comes out at 321MB. My encoder (kino) also has H.264 presets for 1152 kbps and 2240 kbps, if we want to be uploading higher quality video.

Btw we can upload both audio

mfb's picture

Btw we can upload both audio and video files to these archive.org items, and archive.org will happily generate stream and download links for everything uploaded.

any word on the uploads?

matt v.'s picture

I've looked around online and haven't seen any word about what's happening with the tapes. I could probably do some transferring at work, if it would help. Anyone know what became of the tapes?

Hey there!

jlmeredith's picture

The tapes are all safe and sound with Heidi from Acquia in Boston. She is busy rewinding and sorting them as we speak. We are preparing to purchase the external drives and an enclosure and get them to the conversion company by Thursday. We should see the first drive hit OSLOSU sometime end of next week. I will be contacting each person who has volunteered to give them login information for downloading. Keep following this thread fro updates.

Thanks so much for your help Matt!
