Format

garyh's picture

Hi,

I'm just curious to what people think as a format for this.

Do people want to propose sessions and timetable them before the event, or do people want to propose sessions on the day?

I ask as I felt that for complete beginners at last camp I was at in Belfast there was no basic session outlining the basics, the most beginner things available were things like intro to CCK, how to turn a PSD into a theme etc..

I'd certainly be willing to volunteer to give a session or two on how to get a site up and running from install - basic enough site with some taxonomy/cck/menu/pathauto explained.

Gary

@manonmir

It is a question I have been

edward_or's picture

It is a question I have been thinking about over the last few days.

Initially I had in mind a similar format to previous Camps were people submit sessions on a website (coming super soon!) and a schedule is put together based on this. The sessions would be split into two tracks, beginner & more advanced.

Over the past few days I was thinking it might be fun to experiment with something a little bit more like a BarCamp (http://www.barcamp.org/TheRulesOfBarCamp). This might accommodate the "super introductory" sessions you are proposing?

Perhaps one day more traditional talks and another day more ad-hoc BarCamp? What has been people's experiences of these approaches? Does it make any sense to try and accommodate both styles?

I like the idea of structured

garyh's picture

I like the idea of structured on day/free form the next.

If we hope to bring new people in, it could possibly be a frustrating experience if the most basic thing you learn all weekend is how to use views for example. I gave a couple of talks on cck/views in belfast and some people had no concept of the node system/blocks and menus, I can only imagine how confusing Views must have seemed. The pure bar camp approach would suit everyone who's been to these before, works with drupal a fair bit or knows people attending.

Will there be two rooms for presentations?

@manonmir

There will be two rooms. This

edward_or's picture

There will be two rooms. This was originally with the intention of having two tracks.

If we were to try a BarCamp style one day I guess we might need to have a little more flexibility with the rooms. My experience with BarCamp style events is rather limited though so perhaps this is not the case?

We tried the barcamp once

stella's picture

We tried the barcamp once before in Galway I think and while we got lots of requests for sessions in the morning, we didn't have enough people willing or able to present them. A few people also complained that they didn't know before hand what the sessions were - especially people travelling a distance. Hence the more structured format since then. Looking at things like OSS barcamp, they allow people to propose sessions and pick their slot in a timetable, but it's mostly decided beforehand (strange for a camp which calls itself a "barcamp"!).

I'd be willing to try barcamp style again if people are eager for it, or maybe a mixture? with one day structured and one day not? Regardless it would be good to get the site up and allow people to propose sessions beforehand either way.

Website and schedule

jcnventura's picture

Hi,

For some of us that are planning to travel to Ireland, it would be much better to know what's the proposed schedule.. When are we starting on Saturday and wrapping up on Sunday?

Regarding the website, it would be much better to have it out and let people propose sessions.. Even if it is just webform + Garland..

Website Up

edward_or's picture

Just a quick note to say that the site is up now at dublin2010.drupalcampireland.org. People can create accounts and add sessions.

w00t! Awesome work Edward!

garyh's picture

Nice work on the site. I've put up a session there to begin with and will think about another I can put together.

One request, would it be possible to allow users to register their interest in sessions so we know what could be scrapped/go ahead. Maybe just a quick implementation of the flag module?

Gary

@manonmir

I thought about this and know

edward_or's picture

I thought about this and know it is a feature that a lot of other Camp & Con sites use. I left it out because I did not think we would have the volume of sessions to make such a feature useful.
But if we get a large volume of sessions over the next few days then definitely we should add it!

Timing

emkay's picture

Any idea of the time things will be kicking off on the Saturday and ending on Sunday?
Want to try and get train tickets booked from and to Belfast.

Im a little hesitant, but...

Troodon's picture

Im a little hesitant to propose this, not being a great public speaker, nor a Drupal expert in any way, nor have anything already planned, nor even sure if I'll be able to attend, and I'd have to clear it with my employer but would there be any interest in a beginner/business/nonprofit session that takes a look at a live drupal site and looks at how the drupal site fits into the bigger picture of promoting a organisation/brand/etc online, demonstrates how the site uses Drupal, discusses some of the problems and things to look out for when looking after a drupal site (e.g. how to pick a module, upgrade a module etc), touches upon the use of Google Analytics/Adwords/Webmaster tools, the use of Social Media (e.g. Facebook) for light viral marketing etc?

i.e. a big picture look at the use of drupal, with a little dipping into the specifics that shows the other side of the coin after an introductory session that shows people how to install drupal.

Great Idea

alanburke's picture

Hi Troodon
That sounds like a fantastic presentation.
Please go ahead;
sign up at http://www.drupalcampireland.org
and add it as a session.
I think it would be of great interest to a good many people.

Alan

Ale.bcn's picture

Hi Eoriordan and Alan,

thanks for the tips!

I will arrive at Dublin Friday midnight, so I will meet you on Saturday morning if a friend of mine who's living there doesn't take me for beers all night!

:D

Greetings from China

linclark.research's picture

Hi all,

Wasn't sure I was going to be able to make this one, since I'll just be getting back from China, but if all goes well I should be able to make it AND hopefully, if time permits, will have a presentation all about how to use RDFa with HTML5 (inspired by one Mr Alan Burke).

Cheers,
Lin

Excellent!

alanburke's picture

Thanks Lin!
Please add it to the schedule - we'll make sure it follows my one on HTML5.

Panels everywhere?

Ale.bcn's picture

Hi ppl!

since Jim is going to give talk about Panels I've ask him about the possibility to talk about Panels Everywhere, but I guess it's better to ask here!

Does anyone knows enough about Panels Everywhere to give a session at least the basics?

cheers,

Alejandro

Re: Panels Everywhere

jim.phelan's picture

Hi yomismo

I've not used Panels Everywhere so I won't be giving a talk on it - my hubris does not extended that far yet :-) But I'm sure there would be interest in a talk on it.

Jim.

Enough place for everybody?

flowersun's picture

Hi,

I am looking forward to attend Drupal Camp in Dublin.

I have never been in an event like this so I don't know how does it really work..
I have already registered myself in www.drupalcampireland.org but as I could see in the planning, the registration for the camp will be during saturday morning. Will be enough place for all the audience, or there are limit places?

Thank you.

Lorea.

Hi Flowersun, There's no

stella's picture

Hi Flowersun,

There's no limit on places, so no need to worry about that. We just need people to register before hand online so we get an idea of how many people will be coming and hence how many we will need to provide lunch and tea/coffee for. Thanks for registering and will see you there!

Cheers,
Stella

Sharing slides?

flowersun's picture

Hi,

great talks, really interesting!
I was wondering if there was any chance to upload the presentations somewhere (lets say slideshare for instance) so we can download them and retake them again.
with so many talks I get to miss some details :p

Thanks for the camp! great job.

Cheers,
Lorea.

Thank you

Troodon's picture

Thank you indeed for organising the event.

Again apologise for being rather over optimistic on just how much I could cover in one presentation.

I'll write up some brief notes to accompany my slide and upload it to Slideshare - it's not something I've used before: presumably we need to all tag the slides with a common term so that they can be easily found? e.g. drupalcamp_dublin_2010 ?

Hi Troodon I've uploaded my

alanburke's picture

Hi Troodon
I've uploaded my slides to Slideshare.

I've tagged them with 'drupalireland'.

Notes on international showcase

conorc's picture

Hi Piers,

sorry there wasn't more time, you were presenting very relevant, practical and interesting material.

I've pasted in the links of the sites showcased in my own presentation on Saturday morning along with reference articles and case studies
http://www.drupalcampireland.org/sessions/showcase-international-sites-b...

There's more of a discussion on case studies on this post if anyone is interested is reading more.
http://drupal.org/node/940858

PS: thanks to everyone for such an enjoyable and informative weekend, from Edward for organising it, to the volunteers for helping, to the speakers for submitting and giving presentations, to everyone for attending whether they came from across the road (Gary) or from the other side if the world (Lin). A hat tip too to the 6 sponsors, it was great to be able to host the camp free of charge in the city centre.

Here's to the next one :-)

Here's to the next one

edward_or's picture

Here's to the next one :-)

Maybe your tag line should read:
DrupalCamp Ballyvaughan (Ireland) 15th & 16th of May 2011?

thanks for the reminder :-)

conorc's picture

Haha Edward,

Thanks for the reminder to update my signature. There was really good feedback after Ballyvaughan, but it would only be fair to give other places the opportunity for the next DrupalCamp :-)

PS: my link to the case studies got truncated in the last post, here's a shortened alternative

All the best,

Thank you!!

Ale.bcn's picture

Hi everybody,

I'm in Barcelona again :(

Thank you everybody for your kindness!!! Now I have a lot of interesting things to dig and study!

Definitely I will repeat next time, but with more time so I can stay drinking more time!!!

see you soon everybody!

A different dimension

edward_or's picture

Thanks so much for making the trip. All our international visitors definitely gave the Camp a different dimension.

Was great to have you!

No, thank you!

edward_or's picture

Thanks to everyone for coming. I had a fun and tiring time!

A few people asked to about getting speakers slides. I will be working on a way for people to upload their slides (or just link to them from slideshare) on the site. I will be sending an email to all speakers when I get this done. I will also post on the Irish group with an update so people can go check them out when it is all ready.

slides?

Ale.bcn's picture

I forgot!

Can the slides be posted in http://dublin2010.drupalcampireland.org/ or anywhere so we can check the information more in deep?

Gracias!!

Alejandro

Thanking You

Sile's picture

Thanks Edward (and all the behind-the-scene-ers) for organising the weekend and all the speakers for their time and effort.

Great to see a lot of new faces amongst the familiar ones and even better that they travelled from farther afield.

DrupalCamp Alpine Village and DrupalCamp Mediterranean Yacht are indeed very appealing, but I hear the North and North-West are particularly lovely in the Spring :-)
