Pittsburgh and Southwestern PA
Supporting the development and distribution of Drupal in Pittsburgh and Southwestern Pennsylvania.
Central PA Open Source Conference
Just wanted to post this conference:
I submitted a talk about Drupal. I talked about Drupal last year. It is a really good conference, attracted a lot of good talks. If you are semi local consider coming, and/or submitting a talk. It is October 17th in downtown Harrisburg.
How does Weds, August 19 work for everyone?
Hey all, the owner of the Brillobox got back to me, Wednesday August 19 is the next available date.
Post a comment here if you can't make it.
Unless there is an overwhelming response by end of this Wednesday (July 1), I will assume that it works for most people.
Happy summer!

We had the meeting at the Brillobox, which was a great space. I have contacted the owner to see if there are dates available in July or August, but have not heard back. If anyone has any ideas for other spaces we should try, you can add them to the wiki.
In contrast to most of our meetings to date, new users outweighed the old hands at this one, so it turned into a session introducing everyone to Drupal, including those essential modules that make Drupal work more intuitively for new users.
Use Drupal? In a University? Want to join forces?
I've been talking to a few University / College types lately and been asking them one thing -- If a group existed that was dedicated towards Drupal for Universities, would you be interested? Thus far the few that we've pitched this idea to have been very receptive. I posted recently about this idea of a Drupal for Universities Consortium to try and get some feedback / discussion from the rest of the community.
Drupal and wikis?
Hi all... have any of you used used Drupal with wikis, either by setting up part of a Drupal site to behave in a wiki-like way or by integrating Drupal with another software package such as MediaWiki? If so I'd be curious to hear about your experiences. I'm trying to create a Drupal wiki myself—for now I'm going off the "Wiki" Chapter in Using Drupal, but ultimately I'm going to need more fine-grained permissions control than that of the example in the chapter, so I'll have to experiment. I'll let you know how it goes!
DrupalCamp Pittsburgh
OK, now that our third Drupal Meetup is in the record books and we've planned the fourth, maybe it's time we take it up a notch.
Notes, 5-27-2009
Well that was just awesome.
We had some amazing discussions at Sushi Too, ranging from unionizing Gmail users to monetizing Twitter by selling other people's tweets on t-shirts. And there was some Drupal stuff in there too ;)
Please add all you can remember to the wiki.
Modules
Drush - general geeking out over the Drupal shell (again)
Cobalt - amazing module that gives you instant access to different nodes with a few key strokes

Web/Social Media Designer
The Robert Morris University Human Resources Department announces the position of Web/Social Media Designer (exempt) reporting to the Chief Marketing Officer.

Pittsburgh Drupalers,
I was going to ask this at the next meetup, but I can't make the date.
My department redid its web site using Drupal but it's Drupal 5 and the our publications are done in CCK. I've suggested they upgrade to Drupal 6 and use the Biblio module for publications. They said maybe, if I can give them a price quote.
Anyone here up for this? Is there anything else you need to know in order to provide a quote?
And if not, what's your quote? :)

Drupal Pittsburgh June Meet-up -- June 16
Location
Brillobox (2nd floor)
4104 Penn Avenue
The Brillobox has great food and drinks and also an upstairs space with a projector, so you can bring your laptop and demo what you've been doing for the past month and a half.
Also, I know there are a few people who offered to present about different Drupal tools and topics, so post a comment or let me know if you'd like to do a 15-20 min presentation.
Drupal Pittsburgh May Meet-up
Since we'll be meeting mid-June, the May meetup will be a more informal get together / dinner at a restaurant TBD, like the first meeting.
May and June meetings
The Brillobox let me know that they could host us on June 16. After that meeting, we can decide if we want to pursue that as our regular space and try set our meetings there regularly. Anthony has also offered the very cool ImageBox space and I believe David added Robert Morris to the list.
Since we will be having the June meeting in mid-June and we don't want to use up all of our material before that, I think for the May meet-up we should just do another dinner.
We could do Tana again, or I would be up for sushi. Any other options?
Promote Drupal
Recently, I had to create a website, for a Penn State course, to search Tv shows. I was free to select any platform to develop the site on and I've picked Symfony php framework. However, couple weeks into the project I realized that Drupal could've saved me so much time and would've been much more reliable. If only someone mentioned Drupal to me at the right moment...
Notes, 4-28-2009
We had 10 folks show up, 6 from the previous meeting and 4 new people. We started off with some chatting before sitting down and hooking up to the projector.
Show and Tell
I shared my first earnest attempt at theming and the department's first full on Drupal site, Pitt's Intelligent Systems Program. I also shared a class project that used RDFa to structure faculty profiles.
April Drupal Pittsburgh Meet-up
Good news! Got word from the Brillobox that they would be open to having us use the upstairs space, which I think would be a great space... dorkbot does their meetings there and has a good vibe (plus a projector)
...but, unfortunately it is already booked on the dates we were looking at for this meeting, so...
Tentative Location
Joshua said he could get Spinning Plate Gallery (5720 Friendship Ave.), so for this month I'm thinking that's the way to go

Locations for Drupal Pittsburgh meetings
Sitting here in the awesome Left Field meeting space at Web Design Day got Sergei and I thinking about spaces for Drupal Pittsburgh meetings.
Please add criteria and location ideas (especially location ideas) if you can think of anything I missed
Some criteria
- Wireless connectivity
- For now, can hold 15-30 people
- Eventually will want to find space that can hold 150-250 if we do a Pittsburgh DrupalCamp
- Projector would be preferable
- Food and drink options preferable
Possible locations
- Brillobox
4104 Penn Ave., Pittsburgh PA
Free Wifi
Facebook Page
A little announcement about newly created Facebook Pittsburgh Drupal page. We'll try to maintain both pages but make sure to join Facebook group as well.

Thanks, Sergei
Next month (April's) meeting --- when, where, what?
I nominate---
When: April 22
Where: Pitt Law School --or-- the Brillobox --or-- Modern Formations Gallery
What: David Wheeler suggested a viewing party for Lullabot's Views and CCK videos, or we could have a show and tell of favorite sites folks have worked on
Shoot out other nominations (or votes) if you got 'em!
Pittsburgh Drupal Meet-up
Just a little get together to generally geek out about Drupal and start planning some next meetings.
When: Wednesday March 25, 7pm
Where: Tana Ethiopian Cuisine (http://www.tanaethiopiancuisine.com/)
Tana has excellent appetizers and desserts for those who are eating before/after. There is also a good deal of parking nearby.
Let me know you're coming if you get the chance... or just show up, either way :)
Possible Agenda Items ...
DC Doc sprint
As some of you may know, I've been neck-deep in Drupal's Doc team work. The doc sprints that we have had at the last two Drupalcons have been a ton of fun and very productive. I'd like to run a local sprint down in DC sometime before the end of the year. The basic idea that I am thinking right now is to find a location that will let us camp out with wifi for about 4-6 hours on a weekend. I'd be there the entire time but others could just drop by as they had time. I'd be there to help folks get situated, find docs tasks that they find interesting and generally answer questions.

Pittsburgh and Southwestern PA Meetup for May
Let's meet sometime in May just to get to know one another. There has been a suggestion for meeting on the Pitt Campus. When would it work for people?
