Last edition, the question

yoroy's picture

Last edition, the question was asked "What is up with D8UX in terms of long term goals, what's the overview?"

Broad question, but necessary at times. Here's a rundown on the state of things.

5 areas to work in

  1. Builder UX – Improve site builder tools
  2. Editor UX – Improve content tools
  3. Snowman – Create a coherent first impression
  4. Prairie – Improve collaboration on drupal.org
  5. Grow the team – Everybody get better at designing

This focusses on the first three.

Builder UX – Improve site builder tools

Boy, do we have our work carved out here. Bojhan presented on this at BadCamp: features come and go, the tools are here to stay. Together, we've laid out the

Editor UX – Improve content creation, publishing and moderation tools

Drupal is a content management system, dammit. Make it better at creating, publishing and moderation content out of the box. Make creating the first "Hello world" post awesome.

Some tough nuts to crack here for editorial workflow features: revisions and states are hard problems.

But there are other, smaller yet impactful things we can do:

  • Improve the content creation page: lots of moving parts here that can be individually worked on
  • Preview content, srsly.
  • Update search/filter tools on listing pages to 21st century patterns

  • Clean up UI cruft: merge admin pages, shorter, clearer consistent ui texts,
  • Connect the dots: merge admin pages, better messages,

Short term projects

  • Content creation page redesign
  • Modules page redesign
  • Better signup/account UX, srsly
  • UX cleanups: ui pattern consistency fixes, better user interface texts.
  • i18ln always has interesting (hard!) questions for you
  • Groom the 'usability' tag in the issue queue
  • Open new issues!

good list

Sounds sensible in scope, as being not overly ambitious in trying to fix everything. On my inner list I have content type and fields management. We were teased with form builder and its possibilities and enormous potential. But just too many things for too few people.
And - the modules page is way more important if I had to choose. People who get to create fields are way more up on the learning curve of death, but modules are in the face of everyone or more so should be.

Life is a journey, not a destination

User Profiles UI?

I'm not really sure what you guys are doing. I like the list. Drupal 7 made huge steps for usability, but the accounts/profile aspect in D7 core still seem pretty rough. Not sure if or where it fits in these lists but improved user profile editing pages and display would be a great thing...

Check out http://groups.drupal.org/node/204213, better account ux is definately a worthwhile exercise, please do :)

Thanks for passing this

Think it makes sense to

Noyz's picture

Think it makes sense to assign an owner? An owner meaning someone in the UX community that does the following:

  1. Takes the lead on rallying the initiative by...
  2. Creating comps if necessary, or rallying people that can build comps
  3. Rallying for code sprints, funding, what have you to take design to execution
  4. Reporting at weekly IRC meetings. That is, provide a weekly progress report.

Personally speaking, I'm somewhat engaged on the Builder UX, so I would be happy to be the owner for this initiative. I've read most of the posts, have been chewing on ideas, as well as working with Dries' team a bit to get engaged. I've also been working with Seabourne (design/dev firm) to help them succeed with their page builder project - which could be groundwork for D8

Are we splitting this out

Are we splitting this out from the design initiative? I am not sure what the design initiative will be doing if it's not largely UX.
