Washington, DC Drupalers

This group is for everyone living in the DC metro area who's interested in Drupal. You can post here about anything relating to DC and Drupal, whether that's local job postings, events, or just a call out to talk shop over beers. We have two great meetups every month where we get together in person. To receive alerts about these events, join the group.

Meetups focus on connecting people. The target audience is Drupal developers, users, and people who want to learn more about Drupal. We start the meetups with a round of very focused lightening talks that discuss real world solutions to existing problems and Drupal news. These presentations don’t discuss code – anyone with a technical background can understand them.

Drupal Labs are targeted to a technical audience with some Drupal experience and are your chance to get into the meat of code, show off the latest module you wrote, and pose questions to a technical audience for some hands on help. These start with a round of lightening presentations focused on technical topics and are followed by Birds of a Feather sessions.

There's beer at both events. We're open to ways to improve these events and this group, so speak up if you have ideas!

Hey guys,

Many thanks to our friends at Affinity Lab for letting us use their space! I not only had a great time, but was able to get a lot done while getting to know many of you better.

In fact, since I had such a good time, let's have another meetup! I think it'd be awesome if we had one on May 12th. There (may even have been / was) mention of one on May 12th, but figured I'd throw this out there just in case something's changed.

Well, ladies and gents, it's been a pleasure, and I look forward to seeing you all soon!

At the last meet up, there was mention of a Drupal lab on April 30th at Affinity Labs in Adams Morgan. I rearranged my schedule just so I could attend.

Is this still happening?

If so, can someone who knows the arrangement post an event with the info sooner than later?

I would hate for folks to miss out due to a late posting.

Just my two cents,

How can China be of services to Drupal -- practically?

public
john.zhu - Wed, 2008-04-16 18:50

We have been pondering about how to best evangelize China into the Drupal community -- and in droves.

After operating in China for two years, and despite of our best trying such as holding the Drupal BootCamp event in Beijing http://www.drupalchina.org/node/3638, our biggest challenge is the practicality of getting Chinese acquainted with Drupal -- BEFORE -- we can even talk about having them participate into the DROP program, let alone directly contribute into module or theme writing.

Brainstorming User Scenarios for Future Usabilty Testing

kentbye's picture
public
kentbye - Mon, 2008-03-31 21:18

Becca Scollan posted briefly here about a student project where they are considering doing some usability testing with Drupal at the University of Baltimore, which has the possibility to be expanded further in the summer. There are some preparation time constraints that at this point are leading her group to do consider completely replicating the scenario that was done at UMN, and it would be nice if some of the other admin test cases and tasks were fleshed out a bit more so that some new ground could be explored and to streamline the process a bit better.

There was talk at the UMN Usability session at Drupalcon that it would have been beneficial to set up the users with an initial "easy win" task that boosted their confidence -- like setting up an "About Us" page with a primary navigation link at the top. Webchick also pointed out that there were a number of task ideas that were discussed on this wiki page that were not executed, and that are still listed there with strikeout markup.

The intention of this wiki page is to flesh out some potential admin-related user scenarios that could be used now with this potential opportunity at the University of Baltimore. It could also serve as a general brainstorming place to flesh out other usability scenarios to be tested with other usability lab time as it becomes available.

Employment type:
Contract

The Art Deco Society of Washington is in the market for a website redesign. We are looking for a ground-up redesign, using modern software, to get a polished, easily-maintained, and flexible web presence, that not only serves to interact with our membership, but is the hub of the Society's business operation. Because we are an all-volunteer organization, we have no office and no large assets, so a typical office mail/file server would not work for us.

Drupal is Hot in DC

The year is off to a great start with three Drupal events already on the calendar.

First, just this past Sunday, Dave led a meet-up at DC Library, West End Branch. This was targted at folks that wanted a little more time infront of the computers than is possible at a bar and since the Silver Spring, December meet-up that Addison led went so well on the weekend and some folks from outside the District can't come in after work it seemed to fit a good niche.

Next up up we have lightening talks and beers after work next Tuesday the 22nd at Be Bar from 7pm until 9pm-ish. It's right by the convention center so will be easy for the after work crowd. Read more, get directions, and suggest a lighting talk topic that you want to present.

We also already have a date set for next month's meet-up, February 20th up in Adams Morgan. Mike Mccaffre has worked to get a big space at AffinityLab (this can hold a good 50+ people). There will be food and beer (let Mike know if you want to sponsor). This will also have lightening talks - so post ideas on Mike's thread.

Both Mike and Dave are going to be at the up coming meetup on the 22nd. If anyone else is interested in helping to organize events in DC please come so we can plan over a beer. This is going to be an awesome year.

Start:
2008-01-22 19:00 GMT - 2008-01-22 21:00 GMT

Next Tuesday, the 22nd of January, we will start mixing Drupal with drinking like the old days. Come join us from 7pm until 9pm-ish at Be Bar (1318 9th Street NW, Washington, DC 20001 p (202) 232-7450). It's right by the convention center so will be easy for the after work crowd to get to and with free wifi it will be great for lighting talks. We will bring a mini projector, so start thinking about quick 5 minute egg timer demos. Like normal, there will be 6 of them. The quick demos will start around 7:15 and just go for 30 minutes. Post your presentation ideas below!
