Hey, folks! I'm currently working on an issue over at http://drupal.org/node/1314124 to create a separation between distributions (products) and installation profiles (quickstart), create a list distributions, and add some more prominent language to the home page and download pages about distributions to promote them as one of Drupal's key strengths.
There's a Drupal.org sandbox set up for testing, as well as other information on how you can help (like creating a page that explains what the heck distributions are :)) linked in the issue summary.
