Setup for a multilingual OpenAcaDept website

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

OpenAcaDept distribution is optimized for further work on internationalization and localization, so you need to enable couple of modules and to make some custom configurations. Here is a guide that will help you to do setup multilingual website:

  1. Enable following modules: Localization update, Entity translation upgrade, Language icons, Multilingual content, Menu translation, Variable translation.
  2. Go to admin/config/regional/language and add languages that you need. Translations will be automatically imported.
  3. You need to select the main language of your site, so set the default language in the same tab.
  4. Go to admin/config/regional/i18n/strings and make sure English is the source language for the string translation.
  5. Go to admin/config/regional/language/configure and configure how language will be detected. It is recommended to enable URL, Session and Browser methods for the User interface language detection. Content language detection should rely on Interface method only.
  6. You can configure language cons here: admin/config/regional/language/icons

If you see that some of the strings provided by OpenAcaDept is not translated for your language, do following:

  1. Go to http://localize.drupal.org/ and try to find translation of OpenAcaDept Features module on your language.
  2. If there is no translations, then follow these steps to translate OpenAcaDept modules to your language. Remember, the most important sub-project to translate is called OpenAcaDept Features.
  3. After you have translated OpenAcaDept modules or if you have found good translations, that have been suggested but not approved, you could copy them manually to the OpenAcaDept website. Go to export tab and download PO file with suggestions.
  4. Then go to admin/config/regional/translate/import and import PO file that you have just downloaded.

Now you need to translate basic nodes, fields, menu items, taxonomy terms:

  1. Go to admin/content and make sure all nodes are English by default.
  2. Then translate each node to the language you need.
  3. Go to admin/structure/menu/manage/main-menu/edit and make menu items translatable.
  4. Go to admin/config/regional/translate/i18n_string and refresh fields, menu and taxonomy strings.
  5. Go to OpenAcaDept translations find and import translations for your language, if there is no such, then follow next instructions.
  6. Go to admin/config/regional/translate/translate and translate menu items to language you need.
