SUMMARY
For the past ten years AutoTrader.com employees have had just one way to submit suggestions: ideas at autotrader dotcom. This mailbox was erratically monitored and provided little feedback to those who volunteered ideas. It became a black hole that veteran employees learned to mostly ignore. Employee suggestions are far too valuable to lose -- nobody is closer to the customers.
This year, inspired by sites like dellideastorm.com and mystarbucks.com, AutoTrader has created a social network – the “Innovation Garage” -- for collecting and vetting employee ideas. The core functionality is provided by Drigg -- a suite of Drupal modules that emulate the features on digg.com. Employees can now share their ideas with the whole company, comment on ideas and vote for their favorites. The most popular ideas bubble up to the top, helping the company to prioritize, while weekly digests keep
users engaged.
