Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

My thoughts are that the new Quickstart 3.0 should eventually:

1) support the semi-automatic download of a number of demonstration websites to help learn Drupal (synergy with Drupal Ladder?);
2) provide a better mechanism than the existing Modules installation page for locating a desired module tar.gz link;
3) provide some assistance with upgrading the Drupal core by providing guidance on database backup and migrate;
4) support the concept of optional tool sets to keep the initial download smaller and allow staged learning of tools.

I started learning Drupal a month or so ago and liked the idea of running Drupal as a virtual machine on my Windows 7 laptop (or my Mac PowerBook Pro, or my Linux server) to avoid clashes with existing installed software. I downloaded VirtualBox and the i386 Quickstart 1.0 virtual appliance and worked through using Drush to install Drupal modules. However, I was frustrated because I generally learn something complex by looking at an example and trying to understand it. QS10 seemed to assume that you knew Drupal and were just using it as a pre-built development environment. I Googled hard looking for a suitable example website to import into QS10 but could not find anything suitable. The idea of the Sandbox seemed related but I just could not figure how to proceed. Finally I came across the BuildASite and BuildAModule videos by Chris Shattuck which helped a lot but they take a long time if you work through them properly. I also got very frustrated that Drupal does not seem to support looking for a module from the Modules installer page, so that Chris has to recommend using Google to find the relevant Drupal.org download link to copy into the install link box. Then it identifies that the Drupal core has been updated but provides no step-by-step guidance on using the the Backup and Migrate module. Now with some Drupal knowledge I am back to work with Quickstart to learn more, use it on multiple websites and help with its evolution.
