Google Summer of Code - how to encourage participation

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.
You are viewing a wiki page. You are welcome to join the group and then edit it. Be bold!

This page/wiki is a place to document tactics utilized to encourage participation from the Drupal community for Google annual Summer of Code program. This is not an easy job and documentation of what worked/failed is essential to update yearly. I'll personally add to this more after application is finished...

Successful Tactics

*Contacting all of Drupal's GSoC alumni students/mentors
*Contacting all of companies @ https://drupal.org/drupal-services
*Reviewing issue queue to manually found open issues turned projects
*Attend Drupal related events/meetups/camps/cons and request to mention a few words about GSoC/GCI at some point during event. Example, this works out in the morning during opening statements with a keynote or end of day wrap up.
*Posting to social media (we could probably do more)
**Requesting important names in Drupal to post in social media (Dries helped big time in 2014 at last minute https://twitter.com/Dries/status/433249593459884032)
*Recreating mentors from GCI helped big time and being a GSoC mentor is natural next step in continuing to help students.
*

Failed Tactics

*Information about GSoC never made it out to the official Drupal social media outlets: twitter, facebook, g+ etc. GSoC/GCI admins should have communication with whoever can post.
