Introduction to Git

Interested in learning about version control (and you know you should be doing it if you write or edit any code — including HTML/CSS) but never had the time to get started?

  • Always wondered what Git and Github are for?
  • Tired of saving lots of copies of your code and losing track of the state of each saved copy?

We’ll be doing an “Introduction to Git” session at the next Berkeley Drupal Users Group meeting.

Bring your laptops if you’d like to follow along. If so, you will want to make sure you have a command line interface (CLI) that allows you to run a Unix shell:

  • If you have a Mac, you already have a built-in CLI (but we like iTerm2)!
  • For Windows, you can try mysysGit
  • If you run Linux, this session may be too basic for you, but please come share your favorite Git tips!

Or if you are new to version control, you are welcome to sit in and watch us go through some examples.

This will be an informal session, but we will plan to cover the following with some time for Q&A:

Getting started:
- What is version control?
- The command line (Unix shell) and a few basic shell commands
- Git basic concepts

Git workflow:
- Git example (HTML/CSS/Bootstrap)
- Git collaboration (GitHub, drupal.org)
- Git tips and advanced topics

All levels welcome! If you do any coding (even hacking/tweaking someone else’s provided code), you’ll wonder how you ever got along without Git!

About Berkeley Drupal Users Group meetings:

  • We are making an effort to select topics that directly benefit UC Berkeley employees using Drupal.
  • Please let us know if you are interested in presenting at BDUG.
  • Discussion format: Meetings will not always be formal presentations. Some meetings will be discussions centered around a predefined topic. Discussions will be initiated by a leader who will briefly present an overview of the topic possibly including demonstrations or supporting materials. The session leaves ample space for organic discussion. Participants are encouraged to:
    • Respond in these forums with ideas for the present meeting or future meetings
    • Bring problems encountered, questions and contributions to the meeting
