This tip might be helpful to others. I have been having problems getting cron to run consistently. Last night, Shawn gave me a tip to clear the news aggregator queues. I removed the aggregator items and selectively updated each news feed. One feed wouldn't update and it caused an error message. I deleted the problem feed and was able to run cron successfully.
For example: http://domain.com/admin/content/aggregator
Click, "remove items" then "update items"
