Women in Drupal (Formerly DrupalChix)

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Only about 1.5% of the people involved in open source are women, leaving us terribly underrepresented. In the Drupal world, we're up to a whopping 7% 10% 17%, which only gets us to awfully unrepresented. ;) This group is for anyone (male, female, or otherwise) who believes that we can do better and wants to help.

So if you:

  • are a woman who needs some help/guidance in order to get (more) involved with Drupal and the Drupal community
  • are a woman who wants to network and get to know other women involved in Drupal
  • are anyone who has ideas on things we can do to help encourage women to participate in Drupal

...then this is the group for you. :)

Hi All! I'm excited to be hitting up my first Badcamp this year and am looking for a crashpad &/or roommates to split the cost of a room and transportation if necessary to and from the event. Gender Diversity in Tech Requires Applicant Diversity

I would like to see more diversity at my company, but representation by women (not surprisingly) stays representative of the percentage of female applicants we see. That is too say, not very high. I would like to encourage more female applicants to apply to our development shop and to tech positions more generally.

So, here are my questions:

  1. Are there any recommendations on what an employer can do to make his/her company more attractive to female applicants?
  2. How can a business do more to encourage more women choosing tech as a career path?

DrupalChix name upgrade

There was feedback at the DrupalChix BoF today in Munich that the name DrupalChix may not be the best name for this group. After some discussion it was noted that the original name was really decided upon due to not having a better name. We further discussed this and decided to add Women in Drupal to the name.

You will start seeing these changes in all places, including the @DrupalChix Twitter account. The account name will not be changing, just the definition or "real name" as in the case of the Twitter account.

Future DrupalCon Keynote Speakers

At the DrupalCon Munich DrupalChix BoF we discussed how do we get more women as keynote speakers for DrupalCons. One idea was to create a Wiki of women we would like the Drupal Association to consider inviting to be keynote speakers.

If you know of a woman who you think would make a great keynote at a DrupalCon please list her here, why you'd think she'd make a good speaker, and as much information as you may know about reaching this person.

This is our opportunity to make this difference.

Possible speakers mentioned in the BoF were:
Divya (@divya / http://nimbupani.com/)

Roommate for Capital Camp in DC

Hello all,
I'm wondering if there are any females looking to share a room for Capital Camp in DC, July 27-28. I'll be there Wed., Thurs., and Fri. nights, but you are welcome to share for only 1 or 2 nights if you need to.
http://capitalcamp.org/

The hotel is conveniently located just 2 blocks away from Capital Camp - HOTEL LOMBARDY, which is providing Drupalistas with a preferred rate of $209. They are selling that limited block for Wed/Thurs as high as $349.00 per night. Rates in DC are as follows:

Do Front-end Developers need to code custom modules, too?

I have 4 years experience in building and theming Drupal websites. I also like creating new designs in Photoshop and converting them to beautiful, interactive themes. My specialty is called Front-end Development and my skills are in HTML5/CSS, jQuery, some PHP/mySQL. Recently, as I've been browsing the Drupal job ads, I noticed several companies were advertising for Front-end Developers who also can do custom module development.

Increasing diversity in local meetups

Hi chix & rainbows,

Last week I wrote a blog post (http://drnikki.org/node/9), that I won't paste here for the sake of brevity. tl;dr: my local drupal meetup is too homogenous and it sucks so I want to fix it.

The post got a lot of hits but not a lot came of it. The next step for me is to create a survey to ask the underrepresented people in the NYC community why they don't participate in the meetups.

Organizers:
Event type:
Training (free or commercial)

I'm not sure how many people who are already well into Drupal are going to want to shell out a bunch of money to learn Drupal Gardens, but I figured some of you might be getting tired of people asking you how to get started with it, and if that's the case we'd love it if you referred them to our training session later this month. Lunch is included, as is a printed manual and an all-day training course.
