KDI Application Process

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

The Knight Drupal Initiative is an annual, open, public grant application and review process. Successful applications will be passed from the Drupal community to Knight Foundation for full review and possible funding.

Anyone may apply. Applications for 2008 are now closed. The program will reopen in 2009. See http://groups.drupal.org/node/16348 for details.

You should review the KDI project goals and KDI Application Tips before you submit a proposal.

Community review

Any registered member of this site may submit a proposal for community review.

Proposals will be voted on using a five-star rating system. Any registered user may vote on a proposal. When you vote, we ask that you leave a comment explaining your support or opposition to the proposal.

Selection and promotion

When a proposal has a high level of support -- note that this level has not been permanently defined -- it will be selected for promotion to the official project list. Proposals that reach this stage are endorsed and backed by the Drupal community.

Once a proposal has been promoted, community members may assist you in refining your proposal before it is sent to Knight Foundation for funding.

Handoff to Knight Foundation

When your proposal is approved by the community and ready for submission to Knight Foundation, the appropriate introduction to Knight program officers will be made, and you will be asked to make a formal grant application.

Note that this application is more detailed than the proposal that the KDI asks you to fill out, and may require detailed budget information.

Knight Foundation is able to review new proposals each month. Decisions on formal grant applications normally take 4 to 6 weeks.
