Any idea about having a logo for our HKDUG, similar as Taiwan Drupal User Group, Sacramento-Area Drupal User Group or Central Ohio Drupal User Group?
When I mention this idea with my friend Yuki Lam she would like to contribute some design for brain storming. Please feel free to comment and let's discuss about it :D

Is there a Drupal HK offcial website?
Hi Everyone I googled and found no official Drupal HK website like drupaltaiwan.org for Taiwan and drupalchina.org for mainland, does it exist?

A few years ago we had decided that an official HKDUG website would just be an aggregation of content from g.d.o/hong-kong so there would be no point. We could create an official site if/when the group grew so large that g.d.o couldn't do what we wanted.
AFAICT we aren't there yet.

I am thinking about the official site from other point of view: what if we first create the website, setup the support forum for local users, promote with monthly gathering and tutorial, and so let it growth as much as it can? With almost 3 times of attendants in Drupal 7 Release Party than our regular meetups for last years, it should be a good chance for us to accelerate the usage of Drupal in Hong Kong.
IMHO it should be a good idea to give a direction and target for the growth of our user group, rather than just wait for it setup automatically.

Sure, as long as it is maintained. IMO an unmaintained site is worse than no site at all and several HK tech groups fall into that category.

Yes, totally agree.
E.g. I am a big fans of Linux, Debian and Samba; BTW, both Hong Kong Linux User Group, Debian HK and Samba Hong Kong (Ooops site even no longer exists) are not actively maintenance.
From my point of views they fail with a critical reason: there is no room for people to commercialize their interest as a business, and so only able to support the user group with loves. I don't think that a user group of software should be driven by neither single company, but an active open source community is always supported by a successful business model with no question, e.g. Linux supported by Ubuntu and Redhat, and now Drupal supported by Acquia and Drupal Association.
People in Hong Kong are now looking for Drupal for their business growth. We shouldn't miss this chance to accelerate the growth of our user group and contribute more for our local community, especially when Drupal 7 is now release under spotlight :-)

As long as there is a group of enthusiasts willing to help, can't see why it's a bad idea.

From a design perspective "HKDUG-logo-draft-v1-07.png" is the best of all of your drafts.
Perhaps make the building silhouettes all black and straight up instead of to one side. More like HKDUG-logo-draft-v1-08.png

Let's Brain Storm!
I saw the 3 logo examples from the other region groups. Seem you adopt the idea from Central Ohio's using highrise.
We may also try the other approaches and let's brainstorm more different Hong Kong signature elements so hswong3i has more material to do some mix and match. e.g. Hong Kong island's coastal outline, Hong Kong S.A.R flag, tsing ma bridge, old fashion yacht, dragon (you know, tourism board spending big money to fine tune Hong Kong tourism logo), etc.
Agreed, the HK Flag logo, the
Agreed, the HK Flag logo, the Tourism board Dragon, and the traditional junk are all very recognizable icons of HK.
It may be easier to integrate one of those icons with the Drupal tear-drop.

How about some idea as like as apricot-apan.asia?
This is the design of apricot-apan.asia:

Interesting
Will make a few drafts as well and post here.
As for the current ones, I don't think there is much relation to Hong Kong, except that it says Hong Kong.
Colors don't feel representative either, as HK's color are red and white perhaps they should be represented more.
Draft 09 is my favorite of these ones so far, clean and simple and will probably work well in b/w as well unlike most of the others.
Would like to see a variation with the HK text separated from the logo.
Folks, Hong Kong skyline is
Folks, Hong Kong skyline is the most recognizable feature of Hong Kong, don't dismiss this fact just like that. I doubt that bauhinia flower flag, junk, or dim sum would make for a better logo. haha!
something out of my head
Hey, guys, I think we should all see what HK has that no other countries have (or symbolized HK)
Transportation:
Trams
Star Ferry
Peak Tram
Junk Boats
man-pulled rickshaws
Other Ideas:
1. Maybe either the drupal sits on a rickshaw, or drupal logo pulling a rickshaw(meaning moving forward in a way i guess)
2. Drupal Icon on the chimneys of the the ferry(or junk boat) going across the harbour
3. Dim sum is actually not a bad idea if the drupal sits on the dimsum tray =P
4. Bruce Lee-d the drupal icon even, haha, that'd be cool, like nunchucks the drupal icon, or the thumb to the nose on the drupal icon (i mean, i think the eye part of the drupal face actually kinda looks like the old school sun-glasses)
5. I guess just try to inject the idea of HK as in having both old and new style mixed together into the logo...
That's all i have for now, but that's just me tho....
@byue those are cool ideas,
@byue those are cool ideas, but I would think we would want to portray and modern/progressive icon of Hong Kong.
I guess we have to think about the target audience for this logo.
Most people who have never been to HK will NOT recognize the skyline, put 2 and 2 together for dim sum, tram, or peak tram.

KISS
I assume everyone knows what that stands for.
Forget the skyline is my advice, it's been done too many times already.
And I don't think most people will be able to tell from a silhouette that its the HK skyline.
Less is more is also something to think about.
I don't recommend adding up and blending in as many HK related gimmicks into the logo just to sell the idea of "this is HK".
If the basic concept can't sell that image without adding in a lot of extra surplus elements then the concept has already failed, and trying to make up for it by adding more elements will just make it messy and cluttered.
And whats the goal of the logo? are we selling HK or Drupal or the group itself?
If we are going to make a logo, lets do it the proper way.
Goal / purpose - target audience - research - creative brief - development
I know I sound like a jerk ( maybe I more than sound like one :P ) , but doing branding and brand identities has been part of my job for the past 18 years.
As Dave so elegantly put it regarding the website "better to not have one than one not maintained", the same goes for a logo.

Johan excellent job of solidifying some ideas that were also floating around in my head. Great to have your strong design skills involved.
As for the goal of the logo I think the purpose is to primarily represent/sell the group itself, but also to show to outsiders that Drupal is a strong and professional contender for any web project with an active local community.

Hey All,
Here's the unmaintained HKDUG website on Aquia. If anyone is interested in maintaining this please ping me or Nick.

On the other hand if the group chooses not to use this then we should probably take this down.
What if drupal.org.hk?
It seems that would looks more professional and standard if we can host HKDUG homepage with drupal.org.hk, or even hk.drupal.org. Well, I don't know if Drupal.org webmaster will support for DNS redirect request in hk.drupal.org style :S
On the other hand, I would like to contribute for hosting service, therefore we will able to add additional features base on our needs, e.g. IMHO support forum and RSS aggregation in Planet Drupal style should be a good idea.

Logo draft
Well after doing some basic research we came up with this logo for HKDUG.
http://www.metamorphicstudios.com/projects/hkdug.png
I think it captured everything "HK" pretty well if i may say so myself.
We also added in some typography elements that is very typical for HK and Asia.
Will add some other drafts later on, that I am working on.
Let me know what you think.
Well, it's kinda cute, it
Well, it's kinda cute, it reminds me of a Japanese tourist chick stepping out of the shopping mall directly onto Waikiki beach and posing for a photo at the same time. Cheezu! Sorry to sound so cruel, but I think the logo should not advertise any other brands, unless paid ofcourse :)

+1 for the "V" sign!
Haha, this is very classic HK style, especially the "V" sign!
I think this combined with the Konami Code Module will be a nice touch to the HKDUG website!
Real logo
Ok so seriously now.
This is a (real) concept I'm working on.
http://www.metamorphicstudios.com/projects/hkdug_1.png
The basic idea is that we all make up a small part of the group.
And Drupal is what is the key that brings us together, so I used the basic shape of the drupal drop as the "container" that groups us togeter.
The smaller dots represent the wast number of, users, possibilities, modules etc. that drupal has.
The dots can work as an expandable graphic element on cards, website etc.
The typography is still in development, so there will be some updates there.
I'm working on 2 other variations as well that i will post later on.
Hope you like it.
I like it. It is unique
I like it. It is unique compared to other DUG logos. I like the understated symbolism in this rather than the usual mashup of stereotypical HK things with the druplicon.
One problem I have is that even though the tail of the "g" sweeps to the left my brain still sees it as a "q". Not sure if it's just my brain that is wonky.

Great concept
Hi Johan,
Just playing devil's advocate so please don't take my comments to heart.
First impression is the dots remind me of bubbles which trend my thought towards fizzy drinks. I'm not sure of a good alternative though. Also the way the words are placed changes the HKDUG acronym to DUGHK. That's not an important point because whether HKDUG is the correct acronym is up for grabs but we should probably be consistent about it.
All in all I love the concept and your creative style.
Indeed
It most definitely is your brain ;)
To be honest i didn't have time to work much on the typography so there is plenty of room there to make it better.
Will do a few updates today hopefully.
Would be nice to hear what the rest of the group feels about it as well.
Really like it! Very cool and
Really like it! Very cool and understated. I have to agree with Dave about the 'g' though. Something doesn't look quite right about it!
One thought - how about 2 large circles / ovals where the eyes are on the standard Drupal icon?? i.e. to make it more clear as to what it is, when you don't have the text there. Or perhaps that would ruin the effect?
Some more logos designs....
Hey guys,
This is my first post here, I work for a local digital agency called BeansBox….our lead developer Aaron told me about this thread. We've been using Drupal for little while now and are loving it, and would love to give something back to the community. We've been liking the logo suggestions so far, and would like offer some more ideas.
I've been playing around with some of the suggestions from you guys above (thanks!), incorporating iconic HK imagery and symbols into the design. I'm also interested in keeping the fun vibe of the logo consistent with other DUG logos from around the world:
http://www.beansbox.com/hkdug/drupal user group logos.jpg
The face of the Drupalicon is really cool….because its a face, there's a lot that can be played with here. I love the Darth Drupal and Boston Drupal above….also the Dallas one. Besides having meaning, logo needs to stay fun and playful…it should look good as a tshirt or a sticker too!
Here they are:
http://www.beansbox.com/hkdug/hkdug1.jpg
More sketches to come later today. Love to hear your comments, feedback etc.
Dave
And more....
The HK skyline in the logo below should be an illustration and not a photo.....similar to the illustrated skyline posted earlier in this thread....
http://www.beansbox.com/hkdug/hkdug2.jpg
I like the bottom one that is
I like the bottom one that is red color and has the HK flag logo with the Bauhinia blakeana flower in the middle. Perhaps use the shade of red that is on the flag, which is #FF0000 according to wikipedia.
There could be some improvement to the typography, but in general this is the best one that I've seen.

Skyline
I think we should forget about the skyline.
@davidyo
Nice work not the direction I would go myself, but the work itself is quiet nice.
Personally I want to portray the group as group of professionals, not a "kindergarten" so I would like to see a more serious corporate look.
Something that will make people think "these guys n girls are professionals".
And I think it would be nice NOT to follow the lead of all other groups and make something "funny and silly" out of the Drupal brand id.
Look at the Aquia drupal logo for example, they made it clean and it stands out from all other and it has a nice but not to heavy corporate feel.
If they had a logo of a Watsons water bottle with a drupal face slapped onto it, well i doubt they would be as successful.
Just my two cents.
I agree to all of your
I agree to all of your reasons about the skyline, the skyline is too hard to incorporate, and anyone has never been to HK will not recognize it.
I totally disagree about your statement about the logo shouldn't be a little fun. If you look at the base logo - the Drupal teardrop, you would have to say that this logo is a little on the light hearted side to begin with.
In regards to Acquia's logo, I don't think that their goal was to incorporate directly the Drupal teardrop logo, as was the case in the various DUG, DrupalCONs, and Drupal Meetups. Acquia incorporated their name and the concept of Drupal's logo while still retaining something that was totally different. So I'm not sure that this is a relevant example.
Drupalcon chicago would be a better example of something that was a little bit more corporate minded.
http://chicago2011.drupal.org/
Your bubbles logo reminds me of a glass of bubbling champagne - which suggests the concept of party or celebration.

Hey
Hey guys, thanks for the comments.
@cookiesunshinex - yes the red version with the HK flag is a good option. Its nothing fancy but its clean and easily understood as Hong Kong. This would be a solid, conservative choice.
The problem with HK is there are a lack of internationally recognized symbols. New York has Statue of Liberty, SF has the Golden Gate Bridge, etc. I realized that after making my sketches.
@joshrautio I do like the bubbles one you made too, and @cookiesunshinex the Drupalcon Chicago is nice too. But I feel that these types of slick, corporate logos are a better fit as event logos - for gatherings and events like Drupalcon, Drupalcamp etc. And Acquia is a corporation, not a good comparison. The DUG is about local grassroots efforts spread out by passionate developers....and therefore can afford to have a bit of character, a bit of local color, and a bit of the original sunglass-wearing Drupalicon smirking water-drop swagger.
I wonder if there's a way we can do something that is both fun, represents HK and looks professional. This would be the biggest challenge...
Dave
More logo drafts
Here are a few more variants of the same logo.
Made some small adjustments on the type but can still be improved on.
http://www.metamorphicstudios.com/projects/hkdug_2.png
And this one because now two people said "developers will lime this one".
I just want to say I hope nobody chooses this one.
http://www.metamorphicstudios.com/projects/hkdug_org.png
@cookiesun
Definitely the Drupal logo is on the light side, but from my experience that is also key issue to why potential users turn away from Drupal (myself included once upon a time, only to find the path of light later on :P), and instead turn to (yuck) Mambo/Joomla or other OSS cms.
Other cms brand ID just looks more professional and gives a more solid impression than the Drupal icon, even though they made improvements I still think revamping the icon would do more than a new hyped typeface.
@Davidyu
Lookingforward to see more of your logo drafts, keep em coming!
As for the Aquia logo I agree with what you pointed out, and I agree that they did not try to directly incorporate the drupal logo, I was just trying to make an example of an alternative way to reference to drupal without
But the Drupalcon Chicago was a nice and well made logo something worth using as a reference I think.
Ok im dead tired so im not sure Im making any sense now, so i better stop typing before i make a complete ass of myself (unless its too late already)...
Enjoy the logos.
Wow, so many options. Great
Wow, so many options. Great works everyone.
I think my favourite so far is
http://www.metamorphicstudios.com/projects/hkdug_2.png
lower left. It looks professional, yet the brushstroke implies that this is carefully crafted by hand - that Drupal is an art form. I'm worried that the drop + wave + bubbles is too much.
I'm not a big fan of the cartoon approach.
Does anyone else have something to throw into the mix?

And have a poll where one could vote for his/her favorite logo.
I really like how you guys
I really like how you guys started with the development of the logo's...
I kind of liked Johan's hkdug_1.png ... a lot... except the merging of the 'H' and 'K'... is very solid...
Also the red drupal logo with the Bauhinia flower from dave is very good..
I like simple logo's which look beautifull and where the logo tells everything where it is about... These logo's do it pretty well.
Even more simpler is the hkdug_2.png from Johan. Great logo.
Only one thing i personally miss are the chinese characters... I mean, Hong Kong is China... language is chinese and english...
Don't know if there is a chinese 'name' for Drupal. but Am pretty sure the 'local's' in this forum can come up with a translation for the 'User Group' part..
I think chinese characters can make a logo even more beautiful and definitely speak towards the chinese community.

Good idea
We could most definitely add in Chinese.
The only downside to that is the lack of good font-faces that includes all characters for traditional Chinese.
One option would be to do it by hand but takes time to get good legibility and kerning etc.
But it's absolutely something I will look into.
@davidyu, do you have any good font faces for traditional Chinese?
I have some fonts but generally I think the ones I have are overused already.
Du you have skype btw? you can add me by looking up my name. J O H A N rautio ;)
Downside to the idea is to find a good balance, so it doesn't become too cluttered with type.
Anyhow i will try to do something later and post it.
@johan Rautio - I dont use
@johan Rautio - I dont use Chinese fonts often, for me the go-to font 90% of the time is Hei, which to me is like Helvetica :)

Might be even cooler if the Chinese characters were nice and big, and "Hong Kong" and "Drupal User Group" kind of follow the edges of the red stamp on the top and bottom Nice one!
Yeah still needs work
The shadow could be a bit darker.
On the English version i did a light gradient on the text as well since the real buns usually have some lighter areas where the text is.
I'm not a big fan or circular text, as it makes if difficult to read.

(very) small update

I'd love to do a few more, but probably not til next week.
I'd like to do some that play a bit more with the chars 香港. Maybe something a little like neon signs/pawn shop logos.

All submissions were great, and it's good that there is so much interaction and contribution from Drupal developers in Hong Kong.
The winning submission has the following criteria.
A) The overall design is contemporary enough to be taken seriously in corporate/professional settings.
B) Keeps with the Drupal logo, so we know that it has something to do with Drupal.
C) Holds Hong Kong character (Chinese characters and the appearance that the outline is calligraphy)
D) Fonts look great.
