We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Start:
2008-06-11 17:30 - 21:00 America/Montreal
Event type:
User group meeting

There was a great turnout for the last Drupal meetup and we wanted to take this chance to organize another one before summer hits. Like the last gathering, this is going to be an informal session for us to get together in person and share a beer or three and get to know what projects people are working on. Several of people from Ottawa also went to Drupal Camp Toronto, so it will be a good opportunity to discuss some of the sessions that took place there.

Venue: James St Feed Co (although it has a different name now - 390 Bank Street)
http://maps.google.ca/maps?q=390+Bank+Street

Please RSVP if you can make it. There is a growing interest in Ottawa and it is a good opportunity for newbies and guru's to get together and learn from each other.

Please forward this on to anyone who might be interested in attending. If you've got a Drupal site or are just curious about this great CMS then please come on by.

Session Openers

Hey gang,

Some of us have been mulling over the idea of doing a 20 min techy session opener for these meetups. I am not suggesting we do it for the upcoming one (#2); but perhaps we can discuss the idea at this next meetup.

My thought on this was to have anyone interested in presenting at an upcomng meetup post a (very) brief summary as a comment for that meetup and then we can vote on which one gets presented. Of course the voting part i guess assumes we have more than one suggestion - although i have many i could do; so likely not much issue there.

To kinda of kick this idea off; i'll try to post a couple ideas here, of presentations i could do, in the next day or so.

I think for this meetup; perhaps we could coax Mike to do a talk on the TO Drupalcamp?

Presentation of LifeWire.com

liquidcms's picture

Sorry guys, never got around to adding presentation ideas; although the plan wasn't to present at the session today - but the next one.

This is my first proposal for a session opener presentation: Introduction to LifeWire.com

LifeWire.com is a project which i am actively involved with, with the NY Times/About.com.

From a business perspective LW is an "content supply" service company. We provide articles to top content providers such as The NY Times, CNN, About.com and others. The basic premise is that one of our clients will put in a request for an article on a specific topic. Our content managers then assign this article to one of our over 200 freelance writers. When the article has been written, edited and approved it is delivered to the client.

Technically, nearly ever facet of this business is provided via a Drupal site/system called CAPSA (Collaborative Article Publishing System Architecture). CAPSA manages everything from freelancer writer applications, document editing, multistage editorial process, content delivery to clients, payments to freelance writers and more. The site is comprised of over 140 modules; many of which are custom designed by our Drupal design team. This is likely the most complex Drupal site i have seen and i figured it would be a good presentation to show some of the power of Drupal for creating complex web applications.

and just to have some options

liquidcms's picture

I think the goal was to have a few ideas to consider for session openers. Hopefully those ideas will come from other in the community - but i thought i would toss at least a few into the mix for the gang to consider (besides the LW.com proposal above).

Module Design:

Authenticate Module (www.drupal.org/project/authenticate)
- complex module which scours the net comparing site content to possible plagiarized content.
- numerous interesting design techniques for budding module designers including: forking a process via ajax, creating precanned actions, designing a modular framework that allows for modules to extend functionality and other cool design techniques.

Testing:

The professional Drupal development system
- tools and techniques for serious Drupal designers
- using php debugging, svn best practices
- working in a multi-developer environment and tricks to using Drupal multisite for this

Testing sites with live email db's
- intro and use of my new mail_redirect module to allow testing sites that have real email addresses in test db - without spamming your clients clients.

Media:

RSS Feed Caching System for Brightcove Video Warehouser
- i have developed a very complex (and cool) technique for handling video management for Brightcove videos
- creates site content as well as thumbnail presentation lists of videos off an RSS feed
- system was designed for a very large music recording label (which i am not allowed to mention.. lol)

This is likely a decent start. Hopefully people will have a chance to check out this list before meeting later today and we can discuss if we'd like to have one of these presented at NEXT meetup.

cheers,

Yes indeed, it was good to meet everyone last night. Sorry I had to bail so early. I hope the fun continued for some time thereafter.

I look forward to seeing everyone again, and especially to collaborating on some projects!

Cheers,

Sorry..

Hey everyone,

Sorry I couldn't make it last night, I got stuck working on a portfolio to get some extra credits so I'm hoping it's the full 30 since I had to miss out.

I know excuses, excuses..

I'll be at the next one for sure though..
