Ottawa
Welcome to the Drupal Ottawa User Group. We will use this group to develop the Drupal community in Ottawa, to plan local events (DrupalCamps, informal get-together's, etc.) and to share success stories and planned / completed drupal implementations. Public servants (this is Ottawa after all) interested in deploying bilingual / Common Look & Feel compliant governmental web sites will find colleagues in this group facing the same challenges related to the introduction of drupal in the federal government.
Let us pool our resources to develop the first reusable Government of Canada (GC) Drupal Theme, and share it back with the community!
Ottawa August Meetup | Theme: Drupal 7 Patchfest (Getting Into Core)
In honor of the Drupal 7 feature freeze in September we're focusing the theme for this meetup on D7 patches.
I'm hoping that everyone will come with a laptop with the CVS version of D7 installed locally. Now most of us don't work from this version of Drupal, so I've posted a screencast:
http://blip.tv/file/187741/
The links to the main CVS page in the handbook (the navigation has changed since the video):
http://drupal.org/handbook/cvs
A link to another text install about how to do this:

Ottawa June Meetup | Theme: Media
The theme for this meetup will be Media. There were questions being asked at the May meetup about best practices to provide video and audio content in a Drupal site so we will be discussing ways to do this. If anyone has a lot of experience and wishes to offer a more formal presentation on what they've done, the challenges they faced and how they over came them please comment and we'll work it into the evening.
Need help theming a view
Hi there!
We had a great meeting about Install Profiles last night. I am needing some help theming a view and was encouraged yesterday to not be shy and post my request here. So here I go!
I have a user type view with a bunch of fields generated by the core Profiles module and displayed as an unformatted list. I am using the latest version of drupal and views. I need help doing 2 things:
Crash course in Drupal
Sign up for Summer Camp 2009 and come participate in the Crash course in Drupal.
Whether you are setting up a new site or looking to create a development environment for your own site, this workshop should help you get started.
We will be starting with creating an install profile on your laptop and then moving from there to installing Drupal.
Mike

Modules for bilingual Canadian government site?
Any suggestions for language modules for a bilingual (French/English) government site.
So far, I'm thinking the Internationalization (i18n) module is probably all I need but this is a new area for me, so I thought I'd check to see if there's something I'm missing.
Ottawa May Meetup | Theme: Install Profiles
NOTE: Topics for April/May have been switched (sorry)
Venue Change, RealDecoy has been kindly hosting this event for the last few sessions, but Wirespeak offered up their office in the ByWard Market (78 George St, Suite 2) and in May the weather might be nice to head out to a patio afterward.
Please sign up for this event.
Ottawa April Meetup | Theme: Accessibility with Drupal
NOTE: Topics for April/May have been switched (sorry)
Thanks again to RealDecoy for continuing to host these Drupal meetups. RealDecoy is at 1-205 Catherine Street, which is one address East of Bank on Catherine (right behind the Galaxy Photo building). The entrance is at the side of the building (not the main entrance unfortunately). Just come down the stairs and ring the doorbell and someone will come and let you in.
Drupal 6.x Theme | Government of Canada CLF 2?
Does anyone know of available Drupal 6.x / CLF 2 theme??
Thanks!

RFP | Bilingual Acquia Drupal 6.9 web site (Cdn$4,000-$6,000 range) | Closes 30 Jan 09 12:00 hrs EST | G2TT Inc.
Because I'm half of the time in Montreal, and the other half in Ottawa, I'm cross-posting this RFP to both groups. Proposals welcome!
Cheers
Ottawa February Meetup | theme: drupal in government
February Ottawa Meetup - Monday, February 9th, 17:30
We will potentially continue to meet at RealDecoy, but check this space for confirmation. RealDecoy is at 1-205 Catherine Street, which is one address East of Bank on Catherine (right behind the Galaxy Photo building). The entrance is at the side of the building (not the main entrance unfortunately). Just come down the stairs and ring the doorbell and someone will come and let you in.
Please signup for the event, if we can get a decent number of people we can probably move to the basement of the Clocktower. A Google Map to RealDecoy can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/6aor8g
The theme of the February meetup will be "Drupal in government":
- Are you in government, interested in Drupal and not sure if Drupal would be a good fit for your organization, or how to make it happen?
- Are you a developer, interested in selling Drupal services to government, but not sure how to do this?
- Are you interested in learning why having Drupal in government is a whole different ball game than deploying Drupal for private entities?
If you answered "yes" to any of the above questions, this meetup is for you. It's also for you if you can share your knowledge and experience on topic!
There is one scheduled presenter at this meetup, Patrick Cormier (founder of the Ottawa Drupal Group), President of Government 2.0 Think Tank Inc., who will address the three points above. Other presenters are welcome.
Drupal Search Modules & Improvement ideas
Hey everyone, let's get together and brainstorm some ideas for improving the drupal search, sorta like we talked about that cold cold night in January.
TODO: Lee, add more content later
Web based configuration options
- weighting of html tags
- ability to define key words to be given more or less weight
- weighting individual nodes, taxonomy and content types more/less (including not show up at all in the search)
- example that is customizable and doesn't include blue smurfs.
User Interface
- simple user interface for basic users that easily expands for power users
Selling Drupal Services to the Government
I just spotted this event and thought it might be of interest to some people in Ottawa - not so much in attending (it's actually in Virginia) - but more with the idea that we might eventually do something on a similar theme here. There also seems to be a live webcast with Brian House of Acquia but its not clear whether this will be accessible to anyone. I've sent an email to the organizer asking for more information.
January Meetup
Join us for the first Drupal meetup of 2009 on Monday, January 12th, starting at 5:30pm.
This meetup will take place at RealDecoy, just like the the one in December.
RealDecoy is at 1-205 Catherine Street, which is one address East of Bank on Catherine (right behind the Galaxy Photo building). The entrance is at the side of the building (not the main entrance unfortunately). Just come down the stairs and ring the doorbell and someone will come and let you in.
A Google Map can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/6aor8g
December Meetup - Theme Focus
We're happy to announce the December meetup. Our plan is to focus a discussion on theming in Drupal 6 and will have a number of presentations. The presentations will start at 5:30pm and informal discussions will begin at 7:30.
If you have suggestions for presentations, please leave comments below.
Regular meetups will be held on the first Monday of every month.
NOTE: there has been a location change for our meetup. Initially we had hoped to have our meetup at The James Street Pub again but Mondays are wing nights and they don't want to give up their basement to us.
JQuery Meetup Tuesday Oct 28
Sorry if this is a bit off topic, but I thought this might be of interest to some people here.
There's a JQuery meetup tomorrow (Tuesday, Oct 28) at the Atomic Rooster on Bank Street.
More info here: http://www.startupottawa.com/?p=501
November Meetup
So there's going to be a meetup on November 4th here in Ottawa. Several of people from Ottawa went to Drupal Camp in Montreal, there's the announcement about the DrupalCon in DC in March. Lots of good
Venue: James St Pub (390 Bank Street - the old James St. Feed Co.)
http://maps.google.ca/maps?q=390+Bank+Street
Please RSVP if you can make it. There is a growing interest in Ottawa and it is a good opportunity for newbies and guru's to get together and learn from each other.
November Meetup
So it looks like Tuesday is the preferred night with Monday only slightly behind in votes. Thank you to every one who did cast a vote.
For November we will have our meet up on November 4th (the first Tuesday) at the James Street Pub (same place as the last meetups). I will look into getting the room downstairs and will report back once I know what is happening exactly, but for now everyone plan for Tuesday the 4th at James Street and I'll let everyone know whether we are meeting upstairs or down by the end of the week.
Lets get the meetups going again
Hi everyone,
Mike and I have been talking and we want to get the meetups going again. We had a great turn out for the first couple but things died out in the summer (as things tend to do).
What is the best night for you to attend a drupal meetup
Drupal consulting services?
Does anyone here offers or knows someone that offers Drupal consulting/development?
I built a Drupal website a couple years ago and unfortunately have no more time to maintain it.
Thanks!
Are you going to Drupal Camp Montreal - http://groups.drupal.org/node/10649
Drupalers wanted | Koumbit.org
Here's the question: Were you and Koumbit meant for each other? Read on and, if so, let's organise a first date. ;-)
Koumbit is a Montreal-based non-profit organisation that uses free & open source software to provide affordable services, primarily targetted for community groups and progressive organisations in Quebec, Canada and abroad. In order to achieve this goal Koumbit adheres to founding principles and a wholistic strategy inspired by the collaborative practices involved in open-source software development.
Web Application Developer | RealDecoy
RealDecoy is adding an additional Web Application Developer to our experienced team. The successful applicant will be responsible for implementing web sites and web applications using languages such as PHP. ASP.net, Java and related technologies. You will have the opportunity to work on concurrent projects with other professional developers, technical leads, project managers and planners. The developer is expected to keep current of new and emerging techniques, understand when and how they can be applied to projects and assist in documenting trusted best practices.
Drupal for Online Consultation?
Hi everyone,
I am currently looking at different technology options to support multiple online public consultations. We have an extensive set of feature requirements - the core of which includes setting up and moderating discussion threads for different topics; various levels of access rights; including background and support materials; and extensive statistical reporting on the discussion activities.
We would probably need to engage a local Ottawa organization to setup and customize Drupal for us, and provide ongoing support.
Montreal DrupalCamp2008
That's right folks, Koumbit.org has decided to host a DrupalCamp in Montreal! While we are still at the very earliest planning phases here, the idea is to hold a 2-3 day open-space style event in Montreal the first weekend of October.
While bigger and better than the small meetups of recent years, it isn' t as crazy as a quarter-million-dollar DrupalCon.
Trying to figure something out, any help would be appreciated
Hiya everyone,
So I'm trying to solve a problem here but I just can't completely wrap my head around the way to do it. Hopefully some of you can provide a solution or new insight that help me out here. I'll do my best to explain what I'm trying to do.
Session Openers for Ottawa Meets
Hey, just realized i was posting ideas for next Ottawa meet session openers under the post here for the next session (today). This likely isn't the most public spot here to put this, so just a quick post on main blog to link back to the few presentation ideas i am proposing for the NEXT meet.

cheers,

Asking questions to the group before going to drupal.org
Hi everyone,
I've been wondering if it was cool with everyone if those of us still in the newb level of Drupal development could post questions we have to the group before posting them to drupal.org. I was buzzing this idea around at the last meetup and people seemed to think it was a good idea but I just wanted to make an official proposal before actually posting questions/issues.
Next Ottawa Drupal Meetup
There was a great turnout for the last Drupal meetup and we wanted to take this chance to organize another one before summer hits. Like the last gathering, this is going to be an informal session for us to get together in person and share a beer or three and get to know what projects people are working on. Several of people from Ottawa also went to Drupal Camp Toronto, so it will be a good opportunity to discuss some of the sessions that took place there.
Venue: James St Feed Co (although it has a different name now - 390 Bank Street)

Getting Open Source Logic INto Governments Anniversary Party
Hi folks,
This is by no means a strictly Drupal discussion, but there is a reasonable amount of overlap. Based on our last event (and also the first), it seems that there was considerable interest in networking within the government to make adoption of open source software like Drupal easier.
Mike
It's time for a GOSLING party!
"Getting Open Source Logic INto Governments"
Venue: 4:30 pm, 30 May 2008, The Parliament Pub, Ottawa
Wellington Street, directly across from the Peace Tower

Drupal Camp Toronto - Attendees/Ride Share
As we all know Toronto's organizing the next near Drupal Camp. I'm interested in seeing if we can't get a few more folks from Ottawa down to the event. Last year a few folks from OpenConcept were able to attend and we found i to be very useful.
If you are interested in attending register here - hopefully via your own openid account (quite slick thanks to Toronto's James Walker).
Also, please add your name below if you.

There were a lot of ideas about our next gathering, when, where and what format.
If people are interested in presenting about a particular topic relevant to Drupal (a module, theme, project, new-launch, etc.), please sign up below:

Thanks Mike for getting the ball rolling on this - long overdue.
I like the format that we did tonight - very casual. It was amazing to see so many people, i honestly thought we might have only 4 or 5 people out.
New Drupal Ottawa Facebook Group
In case you weren't getting enough local Drupal content out of this group.
Ottawa Drupal Meetup
There's a critical mass of folks interested in Drupal here in Ottawa that it is time we got together to meet in person and share a beer or two in order to get to know each other a bit better. There are now several of us who have gone to Drupal Cons, although I think just Peter, Charlotte & myself were the only ones in Boston. Others have made it to Drupal Camps. There are some great Drupal shops in town and lots of keen advocates/users.

Next Montreal meetup....
More than ever, the Drupal community is overflowing with interesting stuff to discuss and/or to work on. Come find out what's hot and what's not about Drupal 6, internationalization, new modules, the Drupal association, the Montreal DrupalCamp2008 (oh yeah!) and much more. Depending on how many people show up, we may decide to break out into work groups to help move things forward on multiple fronts.
Anyway, whether you are a newby, a power user or a developer, don't miss this meetup!
BTW, this meetup will be held at the Bande-Passante (@BP: 8655 Saint-Denis, next to métro Crémazie)
BTW, BTW, if you are interested in coming, please sign-up with the button provided below... it'll help us keep track of things.

DurpalCon Caravan
We've just signed up for the Boston Drupalcon in March and thought that it would be way more fun and environmentally friendly to drive down to the event from Ottawa, rather than fly. CO2 matters, even when going to a great open source event, plus it means that I won't need to stand in line to get my passport stamped (at least not this year).

Drupal courses
Hello folks,
I wonder if there is any company or college in Ottawa that offers a course in Drupal because I want to learn much more about it. Any additional information would be much appreciated.

Government of Canada CLF 2 Theme Available
I've created a theme which adheres fairly closely to Common Look and Feel 2.0. The only significant difference is that the top menu bar, which is force-justified in CLF 2 using fussy percentages for each item, is left-justified in this theme. If you really needed the exact look, you could work around this by doing the menu in plain HTML and swapping it via PHP for bilingual sites. Or if anyone knows how to do this within PHPTemplate, I'd appreciate it if you could let me know.
