Ottawa
Welcome to the Drupal Ottawa User Group. We will use this group to develop the Drupal community in Ottawa, to plan loval events (DrupalCamps, informal get-together's, etc.) and to share success stories and planned / completed drupal implementations. Public servants (this is Ottawa after all) interested in deploying bilingual / Common Look & Feel compliant governmental web sites will find colleagues in this group facing the same challenges related to the introduction of drupal in the federal government.
Let us pool our resources to develop the first reusable Government of Canada (GC) Drupal Theme, and share it back with the community!
Trying to figure something out, any help would be appreciated
Hiya everyone,
So I'm trying to solve a problem here but I just can't completely wrap my head around the way to do it. Hopefully some of you can provide a solution or new insight that help me out here. I'll do my best to explain what I'm trying to do.
Session Openers for Ottawa Meets
Hey, just realized i was posting ideas for next Ottawa meet session openers under the post here for the next session (today). This likely isn't the most public spot here to put this, so just a quick post on main blog to link back to the few presentation ideas i am proposing for the NEXT meet.

Asking questions to the group before going to drupal.org
Hi everyone,
I've been wondering if it was cool with everyone if those of us still in the newb level of Drupal development could post questions we have to the group before posting them to drupal.org. I was buzzing this idea around at the last meetup and people seemed to think it was a good idea but I just wanted to make an official proposal before actually posting questions/issues.
Next Ottawa Drupal Meetup
There was a great turnout for the last Drupal meetup and we wanted to take this chance to organize another one before summer hits. Like the last gathering, this is going to be an informal session for us to get together in person and share a beer or three and get to know what projects people are working on. Several of people from Ottawa also went to Drupal Camp Toronto, so it will be a good opportunity to discuss some of the sessions that took place there.

Getting Open Source Logic INto Governments Anniversary Party
Hi folks,
This is by no means a strictly Drupal discussion, but there is a reasonable amount of overlap. Based on our last event (and also the first), it seems that there was considerable interest in networking within the government to make adoption of open source software like Drupal easier.

It's time for a GOSLING party!

Drupal Camp Toronto - Attendees/Ride Share
As we all know Toronto's organizing the next near Drupal Camp. I'm interested in seeing if we can't get a few more folks from Ottawa down to the event. Last year a few folks from OpenConcept were able to attend and we found i to be very useful.
If you are interested in attending register here - hopefully via your own openid account (quite slick thanks to Toronto's James Walker).
Also, please add your name below if you.

There were a lot of ideas about our next gathering, when, where and what format.
If people are interested in presenting about a particular topic relevant to Drupal (a module, theme, project, new-launch, etc.), please sign up below:

Thanks Mike for getting the ball rolling on this - long overdue.
I like the format that we did tonight - very casual. It was amazing to see so many people, i honestly thought we might have only 4 or 5 people out.

In case you weren't getting enough local Drupal content out of this group.
Ottawa Drupal Meetup
There's a critical mass of folks interested in Drupal here in Ottawa that it is time we got together to meet in person and share a beer or two in order to get to know each other a bit better. There are now several of us who have gone to Drupal Cons, although I think just Peter, Charlotte & myself were the only ones in Boston. Others have made it to Drupal Camps. There are some great Drupal shops in town and lots of keen advocates/users.

Montreal DrupalCamp2008
That's right folks, Koumbit.org has decided to host a DrupalCamp in Montreal! While we are still at the very earliest planning phases here, the idea is to hold a 2-3 day open-space style event in Montreal the first weekend of October.
While bigger and better than the small meetups of recent years, it isn' t as crazy as a quarter-million-dollar DrupalCon.
Next Montreal meetup....
More than ever, the Drupal community is overflowing with interesting stuff to discuss and/or to work on. Come find out what's hot and what's not about Drupal 6, internationalization, new modules, the Drupal association, the Montreal DrupalCamp2008 (oh yeah!) and much more. Depending on how many people show up, we may decide to break out into work groups to help move things forward on multiple fronts.
Anyway, whether you are a newby, a power user or a developer, don't miss this meetup!
BTW, this meetup will be held at the Bande-Passante (@BP: 8655 Saint-Denis, next to métro Crémazie)
BTW, BTW, if you are interested in coming, please sign-up with the button provided below... it'll help us keep track of things.

DurpalCon Caravan
We've just signed up for the Boston Drupalcon in March and thought that it would be way more fun and environmentally friendly to drive down to the event from Ottawa, rather than fly. CO2 matters, even when going to a great open source event, plus it means that I won't need to stand in line to get my passport stamped (at least not this year).

Drupal courses
Hello folks,
I wonder if there is any company or college in Ottawa that offers a course in Drupal because I want to learn much more about it. Any additional information would be much appreciated.

Government of Canada CLF 2 Theme Available
I've created a theme which adheres fairly closely to Common Look and Feel 2.0. The only significant difference is that the top menu bar, which is force-justified in CLF 2 using fussy percentages for each item, is left-justified in this theme. If you really needed the exact look, you could work around this by doing the menu in plain HTML and swapping it via PHP for bilingual sites. Or if anyone knows how to do this within PHPTemplate, I'd appreciate it if you could let me know.
Drupal Open Market during DrupalCon
Hey folks!
Do you need to build a website? Are you a developer that provides Drupal solutions for clients? Do you represent a Drupal shop that is looking to hire Drupal developers or to establish collaborative relationships with other Drupal shops? If you have answered "yes" to any of these questions, this meetup is for you!
In the world of open source software the name of the game is "coopetition" and Koumbit embraces this concept completely. We therefore invite you to the first Drupal Open Market in Montreal. The goal of this session is to allow:
1) users to find and compare Drupal services providers,
2) for Drupal services providers to meet other Drupal shops to evaluate potential collaboration,
3) for Drupal shops to find developers to hire, and
4) for developers to meet each other, etc.
So I'm thinking Friday, the 21st... how does that sound to you folks? Once we get a few comments, we can pick the date before Monday.
We can't all make it to Barcelona for the DrupalCon so come on down join the party in Montreal!
Drupal Developer available in Ottawa
I am a Drupal developer recently landed in Ottawa and seeking work.
I have been working with the Internet for over a decade and have been co-operating an Internet consulting company called Village Internet during this time. I have been an avid Drupal programmer for almost 2 years and have been using this platform for all new website installations.
Please contact me by email or phone 613 680 7754 if you have any questions.
I look forward to hearing from you and learning more about your project.
Regards, Ron

Hey, Canadians! Internationalization patches for Drupal 6 need review!
Since I know internationalization is a big deal to Canadians, I figured I'd cross-post this to some groups. Please don't kill me, this is important. :) There's very little time to get these patches in before code freeze! (June 1)
The following patches desperately need reviews from people familiar with internationalization of site content. The goal is to get Drupal 6 to have internationalization right in core:

- translation of site settings, content types, user profile fields
and so on by storing translations of their string properties with

Governement of Canada CLF theme
There was talk of creating a Government of Canada CLF 1.0 theme for drupal. Has any work been done on this and is there a theme?
LiquidCMS - Ottawa based Open Source CMS experts
Hi Patrick, et al,
I just wanted to introduce LiquidCMS – a new Ottawa based Web Design company specializing in Open Sourse CMS (including Drupal, TikiWiki, Zen Cart, phpBB, and others). Hopefully myself and my partner (Marc McDougall) will be regular attendees at GOSLINGs and any Ottawa Drupal events in the future.
Feel free to check out our company site at: www.LiquidCMS.ca
Also, feel free to check out a mock up we have done of a National Research Council, Common Look and Feel, Drupal 4.7 web site. The theme/site we have developed has some neat demo capabilities to show various graphic region options as well as an adjustable menu colour demo. The site is also what I would refer to as FULLY bilingual – by this I am referring to not just bilingual content and menus, but URLs as well. The basis for the CLF demo site was a project (non-Drupal) that I did a few years ago for the National Research Council (http://nrc.allanalog.com).
Montreal Drupal Meetup #3: Drupal for non-profits and advocacy groups
The meetup discussed here is going ahead as planned thanks to support from Koumbit.org and the Green Party of Canada. Yipee!
Please sign-up using the form below and be sure to invite others, with special attention given to your contacts working within NGOs, non-profits and advocacy organisations.
--- EDITED - BEGIN---
This event will take place at 3720 Parc Avenue, 2nd floor (Montréal). Sign-up to stay informed.
It's about time for another Montreal meetup...
Howdy folks. I guess that it is about time for us to start planning another Montreal meetup.
As discussed previously, the next one should probably not be limited to Drupal developers. In fact, I'd like to invite anybody interested in Drupal but put a special focus on NGOs, non-profits and advocacy groups using Drupal... but then that's just me. Who would you like to invite?
As for a date... ummm... I dunno, how about the 29th? This would give us time to get the invites out in time for orgs to adjust.
As for a place... ummm... I dunno... any suggestions?
Finally, as usual I will try to secure a small budget for this activity from koumbit.org gang. Of course, your contributions are welcome too.
Report from the Montreal Drupal Developers Meetup - July 28th and 29th
Koumbit.org was honoured to host Montreal's first ever Drupal Developers' meetup this last weekend. Having a great tool is only a part of what makes the Drupal community strong. The rest stems from the increasingly vast network of individuals and organisations that are proactively providing each other with technical, logistical, financial and emotional support. While we are still at a relatively early stage in the whole "coopetion" game, there are many reasons to be hopeful and Koumbit is dedicated to helping in any way that it can.
Communications Research Centre Canada deploys Drupal 4.7 site
Communications Research Centre Canada (CRC), an Agency of Industry Canada, is Canada's primary federal laboratory for research and development in advanced telecommunications.
If you're looking for an example of a Drupal-powered Government of Canada site with CLF, please visit http://www.crc.ca.
CRC's Drupal 4.7x site was launched on June 21, 2006.
Montreal Drupal Developers Meetup - July 28 - 29 (+30?)
A chance for Drupal developers from the Montreal to meet and hack together. Koumbit.org will provide some drinks/food/other for the occasion.
The meetup has been moved to:
Café Art Java
837, Mont-Royal E.,
Montréal, Québec,
H2J1W9, Canada
514-527-9990
See you at on Friday 18:00.
Ok, let's do a hack session at the end of July!
My good buddy chx is coming to visit from Hungary at the end of July (the 27th - 31st). Let's show him a good time by doing some kind of hacking session some place in town. Any ideas on good venues, and anyone interested in coming?
How I picture this working is all the Montréal Drupal developer-types all meet at some public place with their laptops and do some pair programming, bug fixing, etc. I don't have the money to sponsor folks, but maybe we could all chip in and get some pizzas, etc.
If you're interested, please DON'T sign up to this event below, but instead go click the "sign up" button on Omar's Montreal Drupal Developers Meetup event.
OK Ottawa! What Next?
What is your interest, how should we go about developing an Ottawa Drupal community? Plan a few informal get together's, organize the first DrupalCampOttawa...?? Join forces and organize an event in Montreal for the Quebec - Montreal - Ottawa corridor? Go on our own way?
gosling has informal meets at the Black Bear Pub in Ottawa, every Friday, at 16:30 - is that a good idea we could reuse? What time and where?

Government of Canada IM Day 2006 | Web 2.0 "Track"
Last week, the planning committee of the Fall 2006 Government of Canada "Information Management Day" (GC IM Day) met, and we flushed out some ideas on what topics to put on the schedule. In our current planning, one track will have the "Leading" flavour, in the sense of leading change, and that one or two sessions under that track will specifically deal with Web 2.0 implementations in the Government of Canada - existing, proposed and suggested.
IM Day is an event planned by Public Servants for Public Servants, held in Ottawa every Fall. It is very well attended by key individuals in information management throughout federal government. There are chances are that our keynote speaker (not selected yet) will be "web 2.0 enabled" this year...
