Is anyone from the UK thinking of getting to Hungary by train?
It'd be fun to travel together!

Eh?

What, ALL the way? Are you NUTS? :)

I just did Nottingham -> London -> Brussels a couple weeks ago, and I was bored at the end of that. I fancy that another 8 or so hours with 2 or 3 more changes might be pushing it a bit? Especially as you're never sure to get a power supply for the laptop on a train... :p

Aside from that, I expect it will likely be cheaper to fly to Budapest, from whence I shall probably take the train. That's a kind of half-arsed "yes", I suppose! :p

I'm likely to set up some sort of conflab for this stuff at some point soon, as per last year. As soon as I get paid I think.

Edit: 24 hours!! I don't sleep when I travel, so this is likely to completely refactor my current definition of jet lag (sic - trains) I think! No.

I did London to Amsterdam

I did London to Amsterdam earlier this year. It was ace! Gorgeous scenery. Way more fun than the plane.
And for the route to Budapest, the page at Seat61 says you pass castles on the Rhine, which you won't see from the plane ;)

If there's no power supply for laptops, there are these handy things called books that require no power at all!
I'll probably be taking a couple, but to be honest I can easily waste away hours staring out of the window.

Yeah, I hear you, but I have less than fond memories of a) transatlantic flights to/from California, and b) a school coach trip to Berlin with the cadets, both of which involved no sleep and a very deranged me. 2.5 hours on the plane FTW, methinks! :)
