Can we contribute our own language module in Drupal?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.
iren-gdo's picture

Hello everyone here in Drupal!!!
Anyway i just come up to this idea that why not we try to help each other...all the Drupal members here in Drupal Org Phil would be active in contributing our own language module and give it back to Drupal, I know we can make if we help each other to make this module...anyway i'm just a newbie in Drupal, just learning drupal for almost more than 2 months, but i spent 8 hours a day just to learn html, php, making module and how to contribute it to Drupal.
Actually i'm not into an It course, SC or what ever related computer course, and u guys would amaze that i am a graduate of education but when i started learning making websites for a few months i think this would be a hubby from the start, Drupal have lots of functionality and features so that we can build our website easily.

hello iren, welcome to

DL's picture

hello iren, welcome to drupal. if my hunch is correct, you are talking about a Drupal interface in Filipino or translations of the modules in Drupal into FIlipino. Some people here in the groups have started to translate Drupal. I myself have done some translations of the Drupal 6.x core but we are still a long way since most of the people here are not full-time Drupal developers. But if you are willing to volunteer some time on this, yes let's do it.

That's the Filipino translation in Drupal module

iren-gdo's picture

Yeah, that's what i mean...the Filipino translation of drupal, it's really a better idea that we have Filipino translation in such a way other people can understand other words being used in drupal, there are some words kc which is hard to understand specially if u u are new to this...yah, ofcourse if i have time i'm willing to volunteer of doing this module u have started.

we can do parallel

DL's picture

we can do parallel translations. I'm using KBabel (using ubuntu by the way) for translating the Drupal core 6.x, not sure if they it in Windows. I haven't tried the translation module available here but you might wanna give it a try. Just inform the group what part of core you are translating. You can download the templates here. If you download it and untar the file, you can see the list of .pot files. I'm done with general.pot and currently finishing includes.pot. Just pick which .pot you want.

Hi fellow drupaller,

I will be going back to Philippines today hoping to concentrate on development using Drupal platform, I also hoping to meet up with fellow drupallers in the Philippines soon.

welcome to you two!

Iren and Merto, maligayang pagdating sa Drupal PH groups.

Sana makita namin kayo ng madalas sa mga meetups at group discussions!
(Translation just in case you don't know Tagalog that much: I hope we see you in our meetups and group discussions)

Merto, from which country are you coming from?

Thanks sa pgwelcome

iren-gdo's picture

How i wish i would be able to attend our local meetups, specially if we had local conference also here in Phil, but i am from Negros...but i am willing to learn, me and my brother in law are making our own now module to contribute it to drupal in return, just hoping it would be a successful one...

drupal camp in bacolod!

sofiya's picture

im in negros too. :)

Nice to know that!

iren-gdo's picture

Hello!
Nice to know that u'r from Negros too, so time will come pwede tayo mgkaron ng drupal camp here in Bacolod, why not if it is possible...so u are the founder of drupal groups Phil? Last time when i check groups drupal Phil, 2 months ago i think, it gives me the other website, so it only means one of the member here in drupal also from Phil used this domain name group Phil to give his own website, don't know why he used it...but I am here in Sipalay, malayo pa sa bacolod, takes for hours, but our objective here is to teach other people on how to make website and let them learn also about drupal even they are not really into an It course or even any related course, so our goal is to educate people from our place but it seems it's hard for us kc ang hirap mg convince people who does'nt have any idea on how computer and internet really works in our fast computer age now...but we're wishing that we can make this objective we have and more people would learn, we even give free to learn html, php, & everything but it's really hard for us to convince people...

campomanes bay

sofiya's picture

we should hold the camp in campomanes bay, bgy marikalum, sipalay city. :)

It's a nice place

iren-gdo's picture

Why not? campomanes is a nice place anyway...just have to ask where are u now, in Bacolod? maybe we can held our drupal camp there if we have lots of members here in Negros already and for those who are interested...

Meet-up! Meet-up!

marcrobinsone's picture

Wohoo! Tara punta tayo sa Bacolod? lol

Kaya lang sana maabutan natin yung air-fare promo ng mga domestic airlines.

Kung bitin sa budget eh di online meetups nalang.

why not

iren-gdo's picture

Pwedeng pwede un, just 45 minutes lng ang travel to go here, but this time...busy making our documentation for our module.

drupal camp philippines?

skimmerboi's picture

will there be a drupal camp in phils?... i hope i can attend on this one.. i already missed the drupal camp here in bangkok.. too bad..!

uhmmm hey.. i was born in Negros, lol... in Kabankalan city... 2 hours from bacolod.. hahhaha.. i know some drupal guys in cebu too.. but they're silent... hahahaha...

im kinda busy developing my site too.. so see you around guys...!

iren-gdo's picture

How i wish we could have drupal camp here in Bacolod too, i am from Sipalay, u know where is it...hope da2mi pa tau mga drupal negrense here!!!so that we can set some drupal camp here.

yes, i know where it is..

skimmerboi's picture

yes, i know where it is.. i've been there. but only go to negros for vacation.. ^___^.. coz i grew up in Leyte.. so i can speak both Hiligaynon and Cebuano.. maybe i'll do a language kit for that.. lol... i think there's no need for that, coz Filipinos can understand English.. but if for the sake of fun.. then.. that's cool... hey.. don't be discourage.. i'm just saying..! keep rockin guys!..

Does'nt mean that most people can understand english

iren-gdo's picture

Does'nt mean that most people can understand english but what nice thing there is when we we have our own translation then it would be nice becoz here in drupal word becoz not all words here have the same meaning in english, there are really different in meaning and it relevant on computers things talaga, thats why drupal is free and an open source management for everybody... that's the main objective there to have our own translation so that there are some which dont have any idea if they are knew ofcourse they can choose our own translation...

nah.. don't stress.. just

skimmerboi's picture

nah.. don't stress.. just like i said.. i'm cool with that.. i already told my friend 'bout drupal in Cebuano.. lol.. ^__-

yeah, great to have Drupal in Filipino ... but ...

edcazini's picture

Hi guys & gals, yes it would be quite an achievement and a great contribution at that, to come out with a Pinoy (more specifically Tagalog?) translation of Drupal. I will salute anyone who will and can do that.

But coming in from the side of the Pinoy businessman, I think I would prefer my Drupal (if ever) business website to be in the language understood most globally. As a web developer, I'd still prefer the universal language to have a wide reach too. Kung ako naman ay isang naglilibangan sa interneto (internet hobbyist - tama ba 'to 'tol?) o mag-uusad ng sarili kong bahay ng gagamba (haay naku), oki lang seguro sa wika ng aking mahal na Pilipinas.

More seriously, the Philippines has almost 200 dialects or languages, and a number of our fellowmen can't read/write/understand our national language, although majority can. IMHO, for a non-tagalog, English comes as the 2nd language almost as naturally as Filipino. I remember there was an initiative to have pure Filipino as the language of instruction in educational institutions, but then it did not progress.

English People say that the pork (pig) is delicious.
Ivatan Vatahen danu tawu', masadep kunu bagu'.
Ilocano Kúna dagití tattáo, naímas kanó ti báboy.
Pangasinan Say kuan day totoo, masamit kunoy baboy.
Kapampangan Sábi da ring táu, manyáman ya kanú ing babì.
Tagalog Sábi ng mgá táo, masaráp daw ang báboy.
Bikol Sábi kan mgá táwo, masíram daá an oríg.
Waray-Waray Síring hit mgá táwo, marása daw it báboy.
Hiligaynon Síling sang mgá táo, manámit kunó ang báboy.
Cebuano Ingón sa mgá táwo, lamî kunó ang báboy.
Magindanao Petalun na mga taw, na mapiya i nanam a babuy.
Tboli Gel mon kem tauh tey mnom kun yem sdo'.

My point is, in whatever language we push Drupal awarenes and use here in the PH and beyond, the required functionality, ease of use and business value is still there. Maybe we could focus on Marc's "Drupal-out-of-the-box" idea.

this are good translations

DL's picture

this are good translations and the chosen phrase kinda makes me hungry W00T!

anyway, Tagalog is not equal to Filipino but is just a part of Filipino. Filipino is the aggregation of all dialects in the Philippines - this is according to a the UP DIliman Filipino Department - since not all words have exact translations in Tagalog. My friend gave me an example, thumb mark. The word has no exact translation in Tagalog but in Waray they have, daldak.

hehe, how about these quite

edcazini's picture

hehe, how about these quite contrasting words in tagalog & bisaya?

  • how about ilog, pako, hilo, kamao, bukid, gamot, hubad, etc.

sori ha, i think i've muddled the issue na, but sometimes it's quite good to inject jest into a serious one
Also, the essence is that for the PH, it's quite hard to attain oneness in speech or language what with soooo many languages or dialects, unlike other countries where there are few, and variations are not that different from the main one. Take Bicol alone, there are varying dialects that are even hard to understand among bicolanos.

Reinforcing why we should not

loloyd's picture

I'd have to agree with Ed Cazini here. If UP Diliman Filipino Department said Filipino is the aggregation of all dialects in the Philippines then I have to say flat out they are wrong. Sino ba naman ako para sabihing mali sila? May K din siguro ako, kahit papaano. The so-called Filipino language, as it is and as we know it today, comprises mostly of Tagalog words and some intersects of which have differing meanings in other native dialects, as presented by Mr Ed. The Philippines, as an archipelagic nation that we know now, was actually founded in the Visayas region, where people speak Cebuano. Accepting the currently represented and so-called Filipino language as the official national language would probably be an insult to these southerners and maybe some of our northerners.

I don't think it is profitable to pursue the Tagalogization of Drupal dahil na rin, sa sinabi nga po ni Ed, sa worldwideliness scope ng mga websites. Hindi lang naman natibong Pilipino ang target audience natin sa mga websites natin, pwede ring Fil-Ams, Fil-Chinese, Fil-Japs, Fil-Antarcticans and other similar hilaw na Pinoys na hindi marunong mag-Tagalog. IMHO, the Tagalogization effort will not be commensurate to the organized and systematic effort that we, as a group, are staring to mobilize. It is my belief that we should focus our worthwhile efforts elsewhere more practical. Sorry for being a party-pooper (again?).

Ingles na lang para mas worldwidely acceptable, ayos na iyon, DL. Lahat naman tayo ay may kakayahan dito kahit papaanong baroks. Ano sa tingin mo, Mr Goltra?

Pasensya na po, hindi po ako nakikipag-away or debate. Ika na ng aking kaibigan, "ano ba gusto niyo? Away o gulo? Kung gusto niyo away na lang para walang gulo!" :-P

I really do not wish this

edcazini's picture

I really do not wish this thread to be the ground for debates in languages, i have no heart for that
But my point is that as Drupal-PH (bahala ka na individually) maybe we should focus our Drupal capability, or the lack of it (me), to making it attractive enough for one Juan dela Cruz (me again) seeking for an out-out-of-the-box-cms-solution flexible enough for his requirement not only to have a 1st look at it, but really decide to use it without going to an expert for help, free or otherwise, anyway Juan has a grateful heart and he has the "utang-na-loob" spirit.

Take the case of installing Drupal or adding modules to it, simple Juan (simple as in no tooth brushing) cannot go at it on his own. Or the case of "manang" who attended Marc's presentation at the recent PH-FOSS summit in Cebu, I don't think that even with the CD she got to start things up, she did it on her own, if ever. If someone would have recommended Joomla to her (sorry guys), she'd probably retort, "I love Drupal (parang at 1st sight 'to), I invoke my right to choose and stick it out with Drupal". (Really you should have seen her enthusiasm, she looked like a teenager meeting her 1st crush). Today, I doubt she'd be broken-hearted already, inutile me, I did not even offer to set her gear up so she could start rolling. This is open-source, as in bayanihan.

The recent 'Code Sprint' was one small step to making the giant leap. The giant was Drupal, the moon was PH?

well.. kinda agree with you

skimmerboi's picture

well.. kinda agree with you loloyd... Filipino language in general is not really just Tagalog.. it's composed of more than a hundred dialects in this archipelago (well that's what my Filipino teacher taught me, although i was sleepy that time.. ^____^).. so again.. im not discouraging.. im just sayin... ! see you around guys... amping mo diha.. ayu-ayu mog mugna sa inyong drupal sites.. oki. haha..

Accept that fact

iren-gdo's picture

Yeah, we need to accept for that in fact our own language now dies...we need to accept that fact n khit tau are not that literate enough to speak our own language...so stil we need to promote Tagalog para it would still be dynamic, it won't die...We don't need to argue here...Unity is the best tool for us to make this happen, hehehe...(OUR GOAL), tama ka Dl if mayron d2 sa atin has the ability to do the marketing then work together with the group...if some are good making modules to contribute to drupal back then go for it, just need communication to each other...as I've said Unity is the best way.

It is just a suggestion that

iren-gdo's picture

It is just a suggestion that f we cud make our own translationin drupal specifically in Tagalog becoz it's our national dialect, if it is possible but if anybody from the group don't like that idea then wala tlaga...Just like what Mark say Philippines is really left out now specially when it comes to computer...Maybe marami na nga ang mga gumagamit ng computer ngaun specially students of their research work, some are are active to this addicted chat and friendster but they dont have enough knowledge on how really internet and computer works...you all know guys that our education now is getting poor...even some professional like our teacher now a days need to learn a lot, specially the communication skills they must have, maybe for us n my konte ng knowledge bout drupal is just ok lng but what bout others who does'nt have any idea what really it is? So anybody from the group wanted to introduce drupal in the community but pano ntin ma pursue ang objective n ito? We all know that only few people here in us knows bout it...
I did'nt mean that lahat ng words eh we need to translate in Tagalog...It cud be the most difficult one lng muna then if tlgang merong willing to help improve it then a better idea, for example like node, hooks, module etc. Why other drupal group in other countries could have their own translation why we Filipino's can't?Of course, even me would prefer to choose the universal translation when it comes to business kc anjan ang pera, but we all know that drupal is a free and open source content management ...We're not force to do so, but if u are willing to contribute for the development of the drupal community even in the simplest from it would be a great help na...

What we did for Tagalog translation for Debian and ubuntu:

  1. Translate all priority messages (debian has about 4 level of messages) to Tagalog without intervention of editors. Volunteers translated whatever they feel to translate. We all worked though, to beat release deadline of Debian.
  2. Installation messages were completed, long time ago using the above guide.
  3. Is it useful? I still receive messages thanking us for this effort. With the simplicity of Ubuntu installation now, the Tagalog messages are appreciated.
  4. Based on this experience, we started the Filipino Drupal translation for D6. For non-profits and grassroots organizations trained by CPU and Collectivetech.org, this effort will be very helpful to them.
  5. Debian translations are successful because local admins use their own language during installation.
  6. Localization also is not at all correlated to the language you will use in your website. You can have arabic contents with drupal localized in tagalog.
  7. Localization is for the user that manages the site, update contents and the likes. If it is a community site, still the localization will be helpful to local users. They can post in whatever language they prefer.

That's a great idea!!! now myron naman pla d2 nkuha ang ibig kng sabihin, that's what i mean n f we have Tagalog translation, we can only choose if we want our own translation and it would be a useful tool kc we can used it in many ways. Kaya nga just like marc said we're behind from the others na, in fact i cud even say those people who are graduates from related computer course from here are not yet that knowledgeable and literate enough bout this stuff, but thats the fact...our standard of education now is poor.

I am new to this stuff...bero moh ba that an education cud be a future developer too specially in drupal, just learning a lot...The basic tool there is "Don't stop learning, Dream, Explore and Discover".We want to build our own company here to make website globally, our objective here teach students are graduate students from college who don't have jobs, for free... We invest our time and effort to for this project but ang hirap prin to get their attention...still nasa atin pring mga pinoy and Filipino mentality and d n mawa2la un, that's the reality!!!kya nga mahirap p rin ang pinas, but when are u we going to wake up?

Only local images are allowed.

Di ko ba mawari kung:

  1. Uunahing tumulong gumawa ng "Filipino" translation package.

Alin. Alin. Alin ang pipiliin? haha

What u think that best for u do it...this suggestion i make is just simple, if time comes that na some are willing to unite together to make this happen, then why not...we can contribute each word in tagalog what ever we know which related to drupal..."We dont need that PIG word to translate in Tagalog", or khit anong Tagalog word na d kailangan...but for now go on with the best choice u can, i did'nt say that na we need to do it immediately, i am also busy now doing documentation with our module to contribute it to drupal...it's my task to make documentation and tutorial for this module but if i have time am willing give my support for the development of drupal, just like what i said in order for us to gain more drupalers in the community we need to have our own translation talaga, its a simple way but it would be a big help...gets nyo??? what i mean?

Some from the groups really prefer not to have our own translations, he guys but its useful, and i myself knows it needs lots of efforts and time... What's the used that we got 105 members already in Phil if anyone from us don't share any words which is related to the drupal interface?Kng every day myron isa sa atin d2 mgbbgay ng bagong tagalog words then in the long run mgagawa ntin lahat, just need mhabang paxenxa...Lahat tau d2 wanted to let the community knows that"Drupal is here", right? So simple as that, saan ba ngccmula ang mga taong nging successful? Dba from rugs to riches? So we don't need to neglect our own national language, who knows from this simple way doon tau mkkla2 n and2 pla ang drupal sa bahay ni kuya...hehehe,joke!!!(it's here in Phil). But Marc sa ngaun u need to focus muna sa mga first priority moh which cud gain a lot for u and also for the drupal community

form teams. not everybody

DL's picture

form teams. not everybody should be working on one area. those with marketing knowledge and the passion of convincing people (even those hard-sell ones) should come together and start the marketing work.

those willing to spend time on translations can do the same.

this way things get done.
