User group meeting

We meet on the last Tuesday of the month in the Los Angeles area. This meeting will be held at the Rich Media Institute in Venice, CA.

LA Drupal meets monthly and offers a nice place for members and new people to learn and talk about Drupal, a world popular content management system (CMS). RSVP is not required and attendance is free.

Topics

Drupal for Music Bands

Are you a musician or band member and heard of Drupal? Come watch a free panel discussion on how various LA Drupal members/agencies are helping the music world and local bands get sites online and actually manageable. This will be a panel style discussion bringing various panel members to talk about how Drupal can help the music scene anywhere by providing free websites that are enhanced with community modules and themes - and we're here to discuss that. Questions will be taken.

Presentation technical level: Beginner-Intermediate

Drupy - Drupal running on Python

Drupy is a Python port of the Drupal Content Management System. The project is not yet complete, but is moving at a fast pace towards an alpha release. Brendon Crawford will be presenting this preview of his talk planned for DrupalCampLA 2008.

The primary goals of the Drupy project are:

  1. Giving Drupal developers an easy transition into the Python language.
  2. Giving Python developers an easy transition into Drupal.
  3. Implementing any possible Python-specific optimizations to the core codebase

Some of the ways which these goals are being accomplished are:

  1. Maintain full API compatibility with Drupal version 7
  2. Implement all core code as fully namespaced and Object Oriented structures
  3. Provide a comprehensive PHP function abstraction tookit for Python
  4. Enable major core components to run in persistant memory via WSGI

This presentation will cover:

  1. Current status and timelines of the Drupy project.
  2. Installing and running
  3. Differences between Drupy and Drupal
  4. Porting Drupal modules

Brendon Crawford is a Venice native. He has been hacking away at PHP and JavaScript for the last 12 years, and Python for the last 5 years. He enjoys arguing in #drupal on Freenode (IRC).

Presentation technical level: Advanced

I will be presenting a discussion of how we built the Curt Smith website. I would like for some of the discussion to be non-technical in nature, where we discuss the needs that bands/musicians have for their websites. I will also give an overview of some of the modules and techniques that were used to build the site. These include Panels 2 (using node overrides), Embedded Media Field, FAQ & FAQ_ask, and more...

I thought Blake's presentation on the REM Tour site that he built was awesome and would love it if he was there to talk a little more about it.

See ya there...

I really love the idea of discussing drupal-based band websites in a panel format. Unfortunately, that's not going to happen at tonights meeting. We will hold this session for another evening when not only more developers of band sites can come, but perhaps more musicians and band managers who want to find out what can be done for them. We'd be very interested in their input.

I will instead be holding a session in which I will talk about Panels. This is not completely off topic, from band sites, since I will be using the Curt Smith site as an example of using Panels to build a site. We will have more time to get into the guts of how the panels are built than I would in the band presentation. Topics that will come up include:

  • node override / taxonomy override - creating panels that are used to display your content pages. Place cck fields into panes.
  • arguments - how to use simple arguments in views, panels, panes, etc.
  • views panes - how to create panel panes from your views - they're like uberblocks!
