A good set of icons / logo's for churches?

We are building a site for a church. However, we need a consistent set of icons that is church-related. I can find icons with houses, people (for activities), but no one that are specific church-related.

Does anyone here know a good place to get some graphic stuff for churches?

Checkout http://dreamstime.com/, http://www.istockphoto.com. Those sites will have some good images and icons.

Christian Freebies

Check http://www.christianfreebies.com/clipart.shtml for some clipart. Some is better than others, of course, but I found some useful things here. Also check Microsoft clipart: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/clipart/default.aspx assuming that you have Microsoft Office, such as Word, on your system. The clipart you download is in WMF format, but I used my photo editor to convert some to PNG or JPG format.

Ugly

Sadly, most of the clip art out there is just plain ugly. If we are going to use something we should shoot for excellence. God gave people different gifts. We should be encouraging them to do what they do well and that includes artists. Support and using stuff that is ugly doesn't help anyone. It just fills space and regularly turns people away.

Give me some ideas

I would be willing to put some time in making an open-source set of icons for church use. This wouldn't happen quickly, but if there's a need, I'd be willing to work on it. Give me some ideas of what icons might be needed that you couldn't find in a standard icon set.

Tnx all!

Thanks all for the links. Especially http://www.istockphoto.com is a good starting point. However, it's paid (hey, i'm living in the Netherlands ;-) But even on this site i can't find a set of icons / logos for a church. With a set i mean a group of consistent / same / similar graphics in style and colors.

There are a lot of sets, but they are all missing some church symbols, like a ... church. Or something for a pulpit? Something for collecting money?

@Apero: if you can serve the christian side of the open-source world, please! Some aqua-style icons would be preferable.

Lets make a limited set

Lets make a limited starter set... what would you like to see? Obviously Calendar, Contact/Mail... what other ones would be needed to make them usable as a set?

  • for a deacon (what's the adjective? deaconly ?) > hand on a shoulder
  • some media elements, like a speaker, paper. video

O wait, is it possible to extend the tango freedesktop library with some christian symbols? (http://tango.freedesktop.org/Tango_Icon_Library ,site is here temporaly unavailable)

Extend Tango

I like the idea of extending an existing set. Less work, more results. :-) Wish God gave me the artistic brain to pull this sort of thing off.

The Tango color palette can be found on wikipedia

How about this...

Instead of making a set that is exclusively Christian, make a set that is useful for Christians. I think a general themed icon set that has additional church related icons may be more usable across the board. I have a really simple aqua mail button I just finished, and if you like it, I'll try to figure out some ways to do some of the more "Christian" ones. http://www.fouronefourproductions.com/icons/aqua/aqua_mail.png

They look good! Off course, you should continue them!

More Icons Up

I finished up some more of these at http://www.fouronefourproductions.com/icon/aqua

I'm not sure about the cross and the dove ones... they may be two organic for the set... The other ones I did are all straight lines. Or should i try to do the other ones more like these? Or do you guys think it doesn't matter at all? Anyone want the photoshop file to try to do some themselves?

The dove is good, the cross

Lenn-art's picture
Lenn-art - Sat, 2008-08-30 16:38

The dove is good, the cross is to "scratchy". And imho the prayer is to straight.

Do you work with a tutorial or something? Maybe i can try by myself.

I agree

bdornbush - Sat, 2008-08-30 18:19

I agree with Lenn-art about the dove, cross, and prayer.

I don't think you need to keep them all purely aqua. I liked Flickerfly's idea of using the Tango palette. Maybe choose several complementary colors and use them for the set.

Some Must Haves

I like the idea of having some icon sets for churches. For consistency you might want to take a great set of icons and extend it to have some for prayer and other church specific ones. If you want to do an icon set all together don't forget to add in the usual suspects along with the church ones.
