Drupal for programmers training in Ottawa

Hello folks,

I am following up on a discussion I had this weekend with @mlecha, about a training I have been delivering for Koumbit here in Montreal.

We discussed the idea of taking this training on the road, by offering a one-week intensive training in Ottawa, assuming sufficient interest.

My existing course materials focuses on introducing people to php programming with Drupal, and assumes participants with either existing programming experience or an existing in-depth knowledge of Drupal from an admin's perspective. This summer intensive would be a little more focused, aimed primarily at programmers and web developers learning Drupal 7.

The topics I would cover:

  • The menu and permission system; how Drupal determines access to a page and then delivers it.
  • The hook and hook_alter system in detail - understanding it and how to find the hooks you need to implement functionality.
  • The database abstraction layer.
  • The form api.
  • The theme layer.
  • Drupal's objects - looking at the element/field model and it's expression in nodes and users.

I would also be willing to include these topics, depending on interest:

  • PHP syntax for programmers familiar with other scripting languages
  • Intro to version control with git
  • Contributing to the Drupal community - navigating issues, reviewing and submitting patches, and documentation

We are talking about 4 - 6 participants for a 6 day course, and so around 500-700$ a head, depending on the number of participants, in order to cover costs.

If you want to check out the old, existing course plan for the Drupal 6 course (in french):

If we are going to go ahead with this idea this summer we need to get moving fairly quickly...

Hi,

Artengine are willing to host the workshop at Arts Court. Count me in!

Also +1 for "Intro to version control with git"

Given the absence of comments

Given the absence of comments here I guess we can let this idea go. Looks like Northstudio is coming to town, too.

Interested

I was sure I posted that I was interested. If you can get 3 others, I am in.

Northstudio

I read through the flurry of postings from Northstudio. It looks like their offerings are quite different in terms on content and seem to be targeted for a different audience. I'll send out a few more emails to see if we can generate any more interest on your course.

My mistake

OK, well we have 2 people - if we can get 2 more it should be doable. I've written to my contacts in Ottawa as well.

Custom Fields

One of the things I am very interested in is creating forms using custom fields. For some reason, I struggle with this and I know there should be some pretty straight forward.

What I really need is a kickstart in Drupal customization and this course seems to fit the bill.

Custom Fields

rfage, I just wrote a blog post on that topic that you might be interested in. In my post I link to a lot of custom code that you'll hopefully find useful.

Let me know if I've left out anything that you wanted to know about!

Thank you

tarmstrong, Thanks! I will check it out for sure.

So looks like this will have

So looks like this will have to happen another time. Thanks to those who responded for your enthusiasm, and we'll make sure to get in touch once the mtl trainings are set to see if there is a way we can facilitate ottawa participants.

Still Interested

Give me a buzz if you schedule a Montreal date. I might be able to make it there.
